I was pretty traumatized when I had to kill my own sister to save her from the taint.

Me too. So sad, I liked having her in my party. Oh well, pressing onward.

she becomes a grey warden? does she die in the joining or leave the city or something? or is she gone no mater the choice
She doesn't die in the Joining, you get a letter from her a bit later in the game. She doesn't sound very happy about her new life though.
Also she joins you in the final battle if you had high friendship with her, but I don't know if this is related to her being a Warden or can still be with you at the end if she joins the Circle.

Can I get some clarification on this please, do you mean if you have Anders in your party WITH Beth, she won't die or if Anders is in the party and Beth isn't etc.

Anders and Bethany have to be WITH you in the Deep Roads Expedition, as in they have to be 2/3rds of your team down there(with Varric making up the mandatory third).

Next playthrough I'll get her to be a Warden, but I heard she's really not happy with that.

If I didn't stumble upon here, she would of died which would of killed me abit inside.
Edit: Well the path between Circle or Warden, guess i'll just have to check em both out, i'm still on my first playthough. Defs not death but, that's out of the picture.

As soon as I saw that she was taken into the circle of magi, I quit the game and restarted to before the expedition. I'd rather have her live and fight as a gray warden then die or suffer the circle.
You know she's actually happy in the Circle, right?

i think the wardens are much better. but wardens only have 30 years to live and that could affect DA 3. i doubt it thoo.
You think, but Bethany doesn't.

1. You take her/him to the Deep Roads, but not Anders: she/he dies (gets infected with the taint, you have to kill her)
2. You take her/him to the Deep Roads with Anders in the party as well: he/she gets infected with the taint; you have the option to make Anders make him/her a Grey Warden. He/she becomes a Grey Warden, disappears for most of the rest of the game, though you do get a letter out of it, and he/she reappears later.
3. You leave him/her home: Bethany gets taken by the Circle, Carver joins the Templars. I believe there is an opportunity to have him/her in the party again at the very end.

Unless she/he dies you have them back at the post-ending.

I'm so sick of Anders being the party healer. Even if Bethany isn't quite as efficient as Anders, she's monumentally less annoying to me.

I FULLY agree. In fact, I just started my second playthrough as a mage. Hello spirit healer, bye bye Anders (at level 7).
