Wow, when the mother died I have to say that was an extremely emotional moment for me. I'm a man, and I teared up. It just felt like the reason I had been trying to work my way up and make a living had just be taken from me. When she was turned around, and revealed to be some kind of stiched up mess, I was immediately crushed.

I had a feeling she was going to die at some point, but I never expected it to be such a brutal and disturbing way. Did this really affect anyone else like it did me?

It was more of an "eh" moment for me. I, too, knew that at some point in the game, she would end up dying. And as much as I did like it & found the scene a bit emotional, I felt the writers were really lazy.
The writing seemed off.

Far from Bethany's in which I could understand ( The option of taking her into the deep roads to find she will be corrupted and send her to become a Grey Warden)
But I found the death of Hawke's mother very disappointing. Some random mage just kidnaps your mom because she just happens to look exactly like someone he is trying to resurrect. Maybe if they expanded it more, it would have been better. I was, however, pulled in by Gamlens conversation afterwards, showing that he cared for his sister.
