Anyone following Skyrim's news knows Bathesda are making things really right this time around so it's pretty clear in my mind Skyrim will be competing directly with ME3 for both GoTY and RPGoTY.

I loved it when they said that combat is designed around DMOMM. I ****ing adored that game for cits combat and the TES engine certainly can do justice to it.

I would be lying if I said I didn't have big hopes for Skyrim. I've never been much of an Elder Scrolls fan, but I did end up liking Fallout 3 quite a bit. The Radiant AI seems to be fixed for Skyrim so hopefully it will be a better experience than Oblivion. The art direction is looking excellent too, no more round-faced, ugly dough peope, as was the case in Oblivion.

The combat should also be much improved in Skyrim, there are no classes! This, I believe is a huge step towards progress. A class is, afterall only really a name and what the person might task to do, not necessarily the skills they posess or the items they can use. It will be refreshing to play as a warrior who can dual wield or have access to a bit of magic now and then. I will just be content to play as a roguish (not a class!) elf hunting deer in the forests...with the occaisional spell of course! There is also a modified version of level scaling in Skyrim, setting areas to difficulty as you enter them, which is a very nice upgrade from Oblivion.

Sandbox games do have their downfalls, but the freedoms of going anywhere and exploration are also great. It will be nice to wade through streams, swim, jump and climb in a fantasy world. The story likely will not be too complex, but it will cater do a different group of people who are more about the exploration, so it's all apples and oranges.

It will be interesting to guess at whether DA 2 or Skyrim will garner a larger crowd of fans, basing age, gender and interest of the fans but it's also something that can't be guessed at accurately.

The thing with Skyrim and also all other bethesda games is that it has a huge and fantastic community which will make the overall game alot better. These games are only the start on the PC. Only because of these great mods Skyrim will really shine.

edit: I also would never include games like Deus EX and Mass effect as RPGS because they are still shooter. MAss effect more then Deues ex but still.

[nitpicky mode]Yakuza ain't a JRPG, it's more action/adventure. Sure it has stats but so does Tiger Woods.[/nitpicky mode]

Again its more of a JRPG than Mass effect is an west RPG.

So if you count Mass effect as an RPG you should call Yakuza one as well^^

No. Mass Effect is made by Bioware. So that means it's an RPG.

I doubt that Wicher 2 will deliver everything it promises though. Its like 16 separate endings, massively overhauled graphics and game engine, huge internal variations in plot, QTE combat (that should be easy actually), pysiX engine, weather and day night cycles being more effective (they were less so according to devs in the first part), mature story, long tactical boss-fights etc... That's just too big a promise. A development time of 3 years is certainly less in my opinion for all that.

EDIT: Did I forget 3d responsive environment where you can actually throw people off cliffs? I think I did. Sorry.

no physx but it uses Havok's physics.. and u can skip the qte's which will only occur during boss fights.. the game already has all of these stuff in it, its done, it only needs polishing... and unlike oblivion it doesnt need to take out any of those feature because the game isnt going to be on consoles.

"no more round-faced, ugly dough peope" strongly reminds me of the character creation in DA2... a very very sad game.

If Skyrim is another 5-6 hour main plot game with unremarkable characters, broken combat, broken dialogue, broken levelling system... then NO. Yeah you can say that I dislike Oblivion. Most hyped RPG in the history of ever.

People forget that Two Worlds II, for example, already came out this year, so DA II is not the only RPG released so far.

It's funny that people mention the Witcher II as a competition for DA II when it shares so many similarities. Uncostumizable main character, fast paced combat with activated abilities, crappy "romance" setups... etc etc. People probably bash DA II because it's DA II, but the same things in any other game shine like gold. Seriously.

As for Risen II they have to improve a LOT from the first game. That one was painful to play through.

Just my two cents.

It was 2006... Now it's 2011. Also The Witcher in 2007. IF RPGs with so many flaws get a pass even in 2011 I will lose all hope for humanity.

There are RPGs without that many flaws ?

Point is sometimes, with games anywy, that one has to like a game despite its flaws ... so Oblivion didn't do that for me as I'm not that much in to fantasy RPGs to put up with it (aka it didn't pull me into the game) ... and I won't mention Gothic 3s boars.**
On the otherhand I really really enjoyed Fallout 3, similar premisis then Oblivion ...

** I want rats not boars ... at least that is tradition. Has ever anyone been repeatatly killed by normal boars ?:pinched:

Have to stick with DEHR as early favorite GOTY candidate.

Agreed.

+1 to these guys. As good as Skyrim looks, something tells me HR is going to completely dominate it.

Problem with DE:HR will be expectations and managing them ...

But at present my money would be on it as well ...

the witcher 2 looks like a terrible gothic/two worlds/risen remake with bad animation and clunky graphics/design

i think mass effect 3 will steal the show in terms of GOTY awards, considering its a trilogy, much like any movie trilogy for oscars like LOTR will end up winning the last year's awards solely because its the end of their trilogy and the awards are for the whole series, not just the last movie

ehhh.. Deus Ex anyone? This year is packed with all sorts of RPGs, so there are no obvious winners. Plus, if you don't like GOTY on one page, just go to another, there is no official international committee that decide it :)

DA2 is one of best rpg i,ve played this year
it is a shame skyrim will steal all the awards from DA2
as we all know skyrim will have tons of bugs and crash every 5 min

the only problem with DA2 is are cooldown times
and i thought the DA:O characters are a little better
but everything else is much better

I actually expect Skyrim to be the better RPG and hope that Deus Ex: human revolution is going to be better too.

Skyrim will mop the floor with any other games. Hopefully it completely destroys ME3 ( I am still bitter about what the series became). So yeah Skyrim for GoTY.

The only reason I'll accept DA2 as an RPG GOTY is because there aren't any other RPGs released in 2011 yet.

ANY other RPG will do a better job than DA2 {unless it's horribly bugged}.

All my hopes rest on Witcher 2 now after the epic fail that DA2 is.

Skyrim is an action game, bro.

And after Fallout 3, I lost all hope in anything Bethesda makes.

As we all know Bethesda as usual will give us modtools, that will lead to a massive amount of great mods created by talented people. Which will make the game x10000 better
