I don't know who's going to get what awards, I can only speak for my own anticipated experience. I loved Oblivion and the Fallout games, but definitely not as much as the Dragon Age games. It's possible that they could have fixed the problems with Skyrim, but I'm not holding my breath since I've come to expect things like excrutiatingly long loading screens and constant crashes from those games. I also have other issues, like the fact that the Oblivion gates were so boring and tedious (I hope they aren't in Skyrim) and things like in Fallout New Vegas where I saved an important character in the game, which was hard as heck and clearly not what the developer intended but allowed, (not giving name or place so as not to give spoiler) who said we should work together but then completely disappeared for the rest of the game as if he'd died. Now I don't mean to make it sound like I didn't enjoy those games, I did a great deal. BUT I will take Dragon Age's love interest tradition (the thing that I really enjoy that stands out for me as I feel a greater "connection" to the game), more interesting companions, better spells and skills, shorter loading screens, and less freezing every time when given a choice.
Firstly there wont be Oblivion Gates in Skyrim. The plot of the game is about the return of the Dragons (hello? Dragon Age jealousy anyone?). At least it seems so anyway - it may be the return of the Tsaesci of Akavir to Tamriel but I dont think so.
Second. I totally agree with you about the pain in the ass bugs in Bethesda games. The worst part is they never fix them; they release a couple lame ass attempts at patching that fix half a dozen to a dozen minor bugs and it ultimately falls to the community to fix the problems with massive unofficial patching projects.
This has happened with every single Bethesda game except for New Vegas which is an Obsidian game.
Dragon Age 2 did a lot of things right - the engine itself for example is vastly improved. It runs faster and more efficiently; there isnt a slow down while playing like there was in DAO, that necessitated restarts every hour or so even with "patching" to fix the problem.
The talents and tactics are vastly improved and much more useful now over the offerings of DAO; and the conversation wheel with added icons means that it is no longer possible to be ninjamanced. Yay.
The faster animations and lack of finishing moves while sad that we no longer have them except in the occasional cut scene results in a much quicker and much more enjoyable combat experience (slightly dampened by the fact that battles seem to only get harder by the game subscribing to a Human Wave doctrine).
The chargen is much easier to use; it was much easier to make a sexy Man Hawke or a hawt Fem Hawke than it was to make a nice looking Warden (without mods).
The city of Kirkwall feels like a living breathing city whereas Denerim and Amaranthine was somewhat bland and boring by comparison; and the party banters are more frequent and a lot more fun. Also a lot more realistic, the DAO companions by the end of the game all seem to get along fine but in DA2 the companions never seem to learn to get along and actually seem to end up hating each other more as time progresses
The problem with Dragon Age 2 I think is that it falls short of its promise. While it does many things right it doesnt quite get there in the way that Dragon Age Origins or Mass Effect 2 did; it doesnt hit that gaming sweet spot even if it does come close.
Cos of the flaws the game has.
They really should have pushed back the release date by 3 months to give themselves time to pad out and polish the game. It is clear that the game was rushed (in spite of Bioware repeated assurances it wouldnt be) and really needed a little bit longer to be finished properly.
The good news is all the base elements are there now in the DA2 engine so that they will need less time to "tweak" and "rework" things at the basic level for DA3; so they will have more time to work on the padding and polish for that game.
I think it's evident that if BIoware want to save Dragon Age 2, then DLC ala Witch Hunt and Lair of the Shadow Broker just are not going to cut it. A full expansion is going to be needed to finish off this game properly, the way it ought to have been.
