Whenever I came up to a group I would target the farthest one back and use Scythe. That would put me in the middle of them then I would immediately use Whirlwind. After that, if any are left standing, easier to take them out one at a time with Mighty Blow or if that isn't available, disorient them first with Pommel Strike. Need to keep your stamina up high enough. Second Wind helps a lot, so does Might. So does poison for your weapon. Can take a lot of them out fast that way.
