Super Rouges of Doom.. the craptastic Immunity of enemy rouges on nightmare to mage spells

They then go and 1 shot mages.
But it gets better.. if you try to kite.. you get backstabed.. and most often one shot.
So stand your ground... that works... you get knocked on your ass never to get up again due to Super Rouges of Hercules strength attacks throwing you across the room with each attack of there small daggers till your locked in a corner and dead.
I know.. Lets use aggro control to make them attack things that aint a mage.
Whoops Bioware programed them to instantly cloak the moment they are attacking a NON mage in the presence of a mage and to then go backstab the mage.
I know
Lets use points to add to con so we have the health to not die in a single hit.
Unforuntely bioware railroaded chars into HAVING to put specific points in specific stats to a specific ammount to use decent equipment... any gain in health is directly offset by loss of higher armor resulting in one shot kills.
This deserves a entire forum rant on why bioware decided to even include equipment requirements and stats when the equipment stat requirements force every char to be almost identical stat wise.
RPG my ass......
I know
Lets use Paralyse or Repulsion so as soon as they rouge decloaks to backstab it gets paralysed or knocked on its ass.
Ohh wait.. they IGNORE magic effects....
Wait.. wait...
Lets make a new char thats warrior or rouge and not a mage so we dont spend 50 reloads on fights that involve a rouge.. which is the most common enemy bioware decided needed to spawn everywhere in chapter 1.
But wait.. we lose AOe attacks and massive damage...
Wait.. no we dont....
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN
Awesome balance bioware really ****g awesome.
Maybe in DA3 Bioware can have mages extinct.. not wiped out by the chantry but wiped out by 2 bit thugs who happen to despite not having years of training to deal with mages just ignore magic....
Cause all them magic trinkets mages carry will fetch a pretty penny.

And I will freely admit I kited the effer continuously summoning my war hound for the last 1/4 of his health. It took about 20 minutes.......
And I fully agree; I let out a big 'sigh' every time I see a rouge or assassin, because I know its a 50% chance I will not beat the mob without at least (1) reload.

Run. A lot. I had Bethany during the demo ogre fight basically just run around. Mages are amazing at getting aggro (in a horrible, failure of a way) and the only thing left to do is run.
Not sure how far you got into the game, but if you can manage it somehow, get Winter's Grasp and Cone of Cold. Two life savers against melee units and a great pause and switch spell when in panic mode. Otherwise, just run your ass off until you have enough points to take hits.
OR go play a 2hd Cleave machine and giggle at how easy Nightmare becomes.

Otherwise, when the assassin stealths, basically order any characters you think he might go after to just start running (in circles if necessary). If you do this, there's a chance the assassin will actually miss with his backstab attack. It doesn't always work, but you'll be glad when it does.
In the end the best strategy with assassins is to take them out as soon as possible. If you have a warrior that can cause stagger reliably (i.e. shield bash/upgraded pommel strike) and a well-equipped rogue with upgraded exploding strike, you can actually more or less one-hit boss-level assassins with the combo (stagger -> exploding strike with all 10 combo points = ~1500 damage against boss-level rogues).

I respec-ed over to 2H warrior instead. I can burst them down now that they are no longer the massive pain in the ass they once were.

The game will generally not give you favorable environments by default, I often have to fall back almost immediately to a better position. Invariably you will be overwhelmed when the adds arrive, so another retreat may be necessary to avoid a bloodbath. Also, focus fire is pretty much a requirement.
But I don't really play as a mage, except when I babysit Bethany. It sounds pretty brutal =\\

if you have aveline (or just any warrior), a good way to avoid assassins' annoying backstab is to taunt right after they stealth and then immediately put up stonewall. If you have the upgraded version you take no damage (but even the unupgraded version will reduce dmg by 50%).

This strategy works!
Also, while my tank (Avelline) and rogue are dealing with the assassin and surrounding enemies, I try to only use mage attacks on the assassin that have a paralysis attack, like Petrify, or debuff, like Hex of Torment, or AoE spells, which are tricky in Nightmare mode.
Other than that I make sure the mages don't attack the assassin directly and instead pick off distant archers or any enemies that are approaching the mages.
Also, I use my rogue to perform knockdowns on any enemies approaching the mages, alternating between this area and Unforgiving Chain on the enemy assassin.
Shield Bash works great as an interrupt if your tank can get the assassin just before he stealths. It seems the enemies also have cooldown periods for these powers.

The only battle I could not win (strategically) in nightmare with a Mage is the battle with the Mature Dragon. I had to skip it and come back a few levels later. I am a Primal/Force Mage.

Lol. This pretty much enpasulates, perfectly, how to play Nightmare. Kite, kite, kite, 20 minutes later, fight ends.
God damn duel with the Arishok lasted an epically long time cause the bastard could almost one shot me if he impaled me on his weapon and kept chugging pots whenever I got him to 50% health. I think I must have eventually ran him out of potions or I'd never have won that fight.

the only class thats sucks so much is two hand warrior on nightmare. mage and rogue is way to easy!
now if u want assistance for mage spec "nightmare" go primal and as soon as you hit level 7 get spirit and at level 14 get force mage "forget blood" then from elemental tree u take only winter grasp! " then offcourse on creation take heal! and in spirit tree you take death syphon and spirit bolt!
my attributes are 95 magic with gear buff and 22 con and 20 willpower.. my tank is aveline and dps is merril "blood" and i have either varric or isabella, but i dont need them infact i can do it 2 man, me and aveline alone!!!
You only turn on the spirit healing aura in emergency and u go full dps but u turn on when there are heavy grps cos being 10 yards from you heals your party 100%... only thing that is a pain sometimes are the few rogues, but get yuor dog up they 90% of the time stay on him and you go 3-4 on rogue and kill fast! and be sure to set avelin and varric and merril to use there spells on disorientet and staggered tarkets, in ur combat tactics! this will take u 3 days to compelete the game doing every single quest there is!!!! i done it a few times... i started warrior 2-3 times but i can't play more then 6 leve they just seriosuly suck with there joke dps 1v1 and the stamina is a **** in this game, and they are so freaking boring for me!!!
my english is bad i am sorry!!
