In the black emporium(DLC), you can find maker's sigh. It's what you seek Madcat.

If I'm respec'ing her with 24 attribute points available. Should I place 12 in magic and 12 in Con, or should I bring them both to the same number and keep doing so?

Merrill is a total damager for me, she has no healing capability at all but she wipes the floor with the enemies

Personally I think Primal/Blood Magic build is one of the strongest mage builds, particularly at nightmare where AOE spells are enemy only. Plus Merrill's Blood magic spells seem better than player's ones.
Note I tend to use auto level for companions. “Its up to them what they want to do”.

Merrill is awesome! She is my tank on hard. I split her stats between con and magic so they are roughly the same. Skill wise I took everything in primal, the blood mage talents in dalish pariah as well as the AoE aura thingy fully upgraded. Then I took arcane shield in spirit so far and will probably upgrade that aswell (at least to give her magic resist, possibly the party upgrade too).
I have her run into a room full of mobs and lay down tempest and chain lightning and everything stays glued to her. She isn't the greatest tank for boss encounters though so if you plan on using her this way keep that in mind. Also you will want her to have some key skills before you try this like rock armor (I get got the primal mastery which increases armor by an insane amount), and arcane shield.
Even if you don't plan to tank with her a similar build should work really well. The primal tree has great synergy with dual wield rogues. I've got some insane assassinate crits by using mark for death, petrify, and assassinate together (think my highest so far is 10k, my rogue is lvl 15 atm).

I have Varric using armistice and goad, which works most of the time as Merril only has mindblast since level 15 or so and no rock armor. She does have roughly 40% of her stats in constitution.

It's not Merril. It's you. How cliche, but so true. Merril is a beast. Her passive aoe damage sustained mode destroys minion mobs in swathes while keeping her healed.
Give her a bunch of aoe spells and she's like any other aoe heavy mage blasting the crap out of things and throwing Winter's Chill and Petrify in between those aoes to debuff boss/elite level mobs for your rogues/warriors to hit for 3k hps on.
Maybe put some points in CON? My Merril had 37 constiution by the time I finished the game. If she wasn't being the center of attention (my aoe 2-h warrior with her 30% hate generating 2-hander tended to pull and keep aggro on whole crowds of enemies) than she just went blood magic mode inbetween potion cooldowns. Between restoration pots and mana pots coupled with blood magic mode toggling, Merril was a neverending cannon of damage.

I didn't realize how awesome she was at first and just thought it was awful that she could not even get Heal. Then I made her a true blood mage with only magic/con and with all mana used for sustainables.
Such a funny thing seeing Anders and Merrill in the same fight. Anders gets killed in seconds against 2 normal mobs, but Merrill just stands there tanking 5 of them without a problem. What makes it even more absurd is the fact that Merrill can cast way more spells due to all the blood magic boosting items. In my game she only has 3, but that already makes blood magic way more efficient than normal magic.
Her blood wound-ish ability is also very nice I think.

I use a Varric, Anders, Merril/Bethany team and they rarely die (if at all) if you have their tactics set up right. Have one of their higher priority tactics be: Enemy attacking Varric/Anders/Bethany/Merril > Pinning Shot/Winter's Grasp/etc and then have their next tactic set to focus fire down the target and you should be fine. Have their default behaviour set up as ranged and they should be able to kite the enemy just fine. However there are times when they would run away from one enemy right into the a group of other enemies so you should pay attention and be careful.
I do find one of Merril's abilities to be pretty useless though. Ensnare? It does pitiful damage and I don't really think it's worth spending a point for. Playing on Hard by the way.

Am I not using her "right", if I've focused entirely on making her Elemental?
is spirit/entropy tree really that good?
She is the only magic user I'm using (yes, no healing...)

@ACDimps seems you and i both made her into a elemental destroying machine lol
. i have my merrill with full elemental and the rock/lightening tree she has no problems surviving with about 25 con, my hawke simply uses full team arcane shield plus merrill with her rock armour she very very rarely dies for me unless im caught off gaurd by one of the Qunari mages or some such enemy with the stupid powerful borderline one hit spells lol

Started a Primal / Blood mage = Merrill clone.Merrill..how to make her not suck? seriously.
Start each combat with two tempest and two chain lightnings in the first two terns - softens them up for the metal guys. Even on nightmare most combats are a breeze.

I had a mix of abilities with my Merrill build elemental-primal-blood ...she was bad ass. When I fought that high dragon at the mine(the big one that spawns a **** ton of lil dragons...and you get a piece of the armor from the destiny trailer) my party wiped out(went in ill prepared) Only one left standing was Merrill area of effect for spawns and stick and move for that **** dragon.

Primal + bloodmage, set chain lightning to react to your stagger (you where a warrior right) and also put point in her health not her mana pool, she is a blood mage.

I find her spells such as Petrify, Stonefist, Walkig Bomb, Spirit Bolt work quite well with a DW Rogue. She can also cast Horror which is a great skill and Chain Lighting and Tempest are both great skills. Combine this with Rock Armor, Arcane Weapons, Wrath of The Elven and she is a nice utility team mate. Capable of buffing herself, the party, support spells, damage spells, CCC, crowd control. She can do alot. Max out her con and magic. This will allow her to have a ton of health to cast spells. You just have to kind of manage her a bit more. I can list my full build along with the party makeup later if you want.

Respec her, first of all, and focus on HP and magic, and avoid the MP stat. As a bloodmage, she can cast from her HP pool. Get her gear to improve blood magic, and her casting won't hurt her survivability, and she'll have much greater survival due to higher HP. Also, since her MP is useless, stack passive buffs on her too. She becomes a great tank/buffer/DD/CCer all at the same time.
Her Keeper abilities are really nice, with all the AOEing and draining to refill her HP. If anything, I wish Mage Hawke could be more like Merrill.

Playing on Normal with my 2H Warrior, I usually invest in a combination of Spirit and Primal spells for Merrill, and normally have her keep on Death Siphon and Wrath of the Elvhan at all times. Walking Bomb is also great to use with Ensnare; set the fuse on one foe, then use Ensnare to suck them all together for maximum splash damage. Also, with both Spirit Mastery and Galvanism researched, as well as Death Siphon activated, she's never really likely to run out of mana, and Improved Death Siphon and Arlathan's Grace will help her heal and keep her alive longer. Just some suggestions!

Merril's DPS is a beast. You can use her as a badass damager, or sneaky debilitation, she's a captain killer, easy.
Spirit abilities for Mages(Dispell, Walking bomb)
Arcane for rouges(crushing prison for two handers, mindblast for elite two handers, and arcane shield to do away arrows)
Bloodmage for warriors.

I don't use her blood magic (as a RP thing) but I find her quite useful now. I'm playing a 2H warrior and Merrill/Anders/Varric or Isabela are just squad of death-dealing and destruction. That high dragon fight was a walk in the park. Hex of torment is freaking brilliant.
Obvs as I don't use blood magic, I don't pump her con.

This is my Merrill's set up:
http://desmond.image....jpg&res=medium
I play on Nightmare, as a rogue, and I do not use a tank. My group is usually Merrill, Varric, and Anders. I gave Merrill 29 points into constitution and everything else went into Magic.
Hope that helps a little.
I would post my tactics, but I'm at work right now. XD

My Merrill set up is pretty similar to Uinen03's, although I skip arcane shield and spirit bolt and death syphon and instead get the colds. Not only do they freeze and brittle, but cone of cold is very useful as i'm a little bit willing to let her wade into a bunch of enemies due to wrath of the elvhen and ensnare and her high HP.
BTW Uinen03 I believe that death syphon is useless for a blood mage because it doesn't increase health.
Anyways, blood mage Merrill for the win. Hitting a group of enemies with wounds of the past, tempest, and chain lightning one after another is pretty awesome. And for pretty much any enemy shy of a high dragon or something, hitting a boss with petrify, hex of torment, mark of death, and then using assassinate and twin fangs = death.

Maker's Sigh is the potion - it's sold in the black emporium.
I respec her and make her a healer with rock armor, then she casts glyphs and heals, not much can get past her glyphs and, she had rock armor if one does get to her. She is no damage dealer, but can be a decent healer IMO. I also redo Anders into an elemental mage (Fire, Ice, Lightning) and run them with my blood mage Hawke and a rogue if needed or a warrior. (then she only really has to heal the rogue or warrior and can't heal Hawke but he has grave robber to take care of himself.)
Mages are ranged fighters - keep them out of melee, run, cast, run, cast (kite)

I went to the Black Imporium and got that book to redo all her points. Her personal specialization just is useless IMO. I've been using Entropy, the Spirit thingy, and add a little on her lightning and ice abilities plus Rock Armor. Arcane Shield also helps. A little in constitution, but if you have Arcane and Rock Armor, you shouldn't need too much.

You're missing out if you believe her personal tree is useless. All staff elemental damage types pass through her Blood Wound spell and affect the target. This advantage is devestating on large groups, especially if you are taking advantage of weaknesses, 2x damage + guarenteed effect. Anything in close range of her is taking high volumes of damage via pbaoe that happens to heal her. If you have any dlc content at all she is gaining large bonuses to nature and electrical damage via personal items.
Keeping Merrill away from these abilities is like going spirit healer for your pc mage, it's for fun and a challenge, it's not optimal in any way or suggested by anyone with a clue.
