When I try to interact with something (open a door, pick up loot, attack an enemy), even thought I'm aiming at my target the game will act as if nothing is there and my mage will just do his twirling staff thing. To get it to work I have to  select the target by opening the radial menu. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough to make it a problem, especially in combat

Hey guys, have you guys tried getting closer to interactive items? Your player character will do a neutral action (twirling staff) when you are not in range of something. When using the radial menu everything is in range and will work because we allow pathfinding to the selected point.

This is true, but the same control scheme was used in Origins and i never had that problem on that game, or at least not this much. Getting to close will make you loose the target, i.e a door. It seems that the auto-targeting system is a bit broken in this game, at least for the consoles. Defintetly something you guys can improve in future updates.

Actually I find the opposite is usually the problem -- often I am too close to a clickable and need to back up off it a foot or so in order to be able to activate it, with or without radial menu targetting.

This happened to me in both Origins and DA2 but it was MUCH worse in DA2. There were some things that I could find NO position that allowed me to interact with item. In particular, I remember it happening with Andraste's statue in the Chantry. Too close, to far, too much to the side? Never did figure it out - on my 6th trip to the Chantry I finally remembered to use the radial menu to get the codex item.

Oddly enough, the only time this happens to me is when playing a mage.

I've had this issue just trying to open a door. I will get the arrow icon in a blacked out version and then as I get closer the arrow icon will come into full color but then go back to black almost immediately. It takes me three or four tries just to get the full color icon to come back up again. This isn't a case of just getting closer. Sometimes I'm standing right next to the door and the icon will not show up. For instance trying to enter the Blooming Rose in Hightown. I can be standing right next to the door to the place and the arrow icon will not show up. I will have to walk away from the door, turn around walk back and then baby step myself closer to the door until the arrow icon comes to full color. If I don't do that I can't get inside.

Also having this problem. Seems worse when in combat with a mage. I would be looking straight at a guy and hitting A would just make him twirl his staff. Using the radial menu to manually target him can take a few tries aswell. Seems to happen after using an AOE spell, probably because it loses who i was targeting before. Not a major issue i suppose but annoying non the less.

If you pull L-trigger [to pop-up your radial, and do a momentary pause] you can:
1> target things very easily, even in combat [a la Chantry Chapter 3]
2> Get a quick scan for any chests, etc, etc. in the area, as it has a long-distance view of objects in the environment you can interact with.

This should be an option that can be toggled on or off, IMO. [both with targeting, and viewing which objects one can interact with]

This is definitely an issue that pops up for mages, and seems to happen more often with certain doors (the entry to the blooming rose especially) or in combat right after using an AOE spell. I am on my fourth playthrough now (second time as a mage) and both of my Mage playthroughs have seen this issue, while with Warrior and Rogue it wasn't a problem.

In the high dragon fight I could not target the dragon when it is in the middle perch so the mage and rogue just stand there getting fragged and not fighting back. I tried right in front and the small ridge next to the dragon.

4th Play though here and I agree, it is the Mage, moreso after an AOE attack. The enemies health bars go invisible/ pink and un attackable...

The exact problem happens when the user casts an AoE spell from the radial menu (more common with
mage class). From this point on, the game will think the user still in the radial menu and
disable the auto-targetting behaviour one would normally expect when pointing at a creature.

Additionally, since it's stuck in radial targetting mode, all objects would be targettable
including loots or other placeables.

A work around for people out there would be to open then close the radial menu without doing any action after they notice this issue. This will reset the targetting mode. Or use the battle menu for casting AoE abilities instead.

I've run into the thing JDang has just described while casting a blood mage spell Hemorrhage. After casting the spell unable to target enemies.

Hopefully this gets patched too. It's annoying and using the work around is just as annoying, especially if you're being attacked by a melee attack after casting a spell. Having to open and close the radial menu to fix the targeting is just plain broke.

Yeah my targetting is very fiddly too, both in and out of combat, and if I pop the radial menu as soon as a fight starts, I have to close & open it again, which gives the enemy time to start dispersing/sprint to me. My companions also randomly seem to 'hold' after combat without being told to either.
