Is this viable? I was hoping to play it as earth/force mage with heal and cc abilities, but the way warrior aoe works means that fenris will end up killing the tank the majority of the time.

I really hate that there is only one way to stagger enemies.

if you are going for force, walking bomb does wonders.
bomb one, gather up with abyss, burst the bomb with ranged rogue. (add cone of ice or gylph of paralyze if you running a double mage, and freeze them as soon as you gather them up).

I did take primal/force/blood/some other cc first, but found it quite lacking during boss fights.
Helped me out much more after switcking to spirit/enthropy/force as offensive trees.

That's all nice in theory, but Pull is pretty awful.  Primal/Force is hands down the best Mage combo for Nightmare. I'm also not sure how much you actually put into Force, or if you even knew this -- but Gravitic is the single most powerful boss spell in the game.

Gravitic is nice in terms of pinning down and halting auto attacks, no denying that.  Just needed something more for high dragon and other bosses.  I'm sure you found primal not so useful on most of the boss fights.

I dunno why anyone wouldn't use pull/push on trash humanoids(less fort).  With 100 fort (undistructable), it's the best AoE CC that let's you cast on top of yourself, making your ranged dps positioning much much easier without having to move your tank.

Primal is nice for killing trash mobs but I do fine with them with or without primal tree.  I find teching a full spec for trash mobs a waste.

Any build is possible in nightmare. Nightmare is definitely beatable. If you can't win an encounter, gains some levels and come back.
