I know this topic surfaced before and it is mostly a matter of personal taste. I don't want to become the most powerful character possible but just to have the most diverse and fun game. I've been only playing for a few days now but read many threads and had finally had some experience with the game.

Rogue seems the most interesting character to play and also has nice things such as disarming traps and opening locks - so I'm pretty set on playing a rogue. I initially thought about playing a rogue archer.  However, after a few hours, it seems that most of what I do for that character is clicking the attack button and that's pretty much it. I was hoping to be a fighter/archer type, shooting at things from afar and then switching to melee once things get more intimate (doing so throughout the game). However, upon reading more threads/postings, it seemed that a rogue can be an adept scout, going ahead of the party and scouting, possibly using stealth to take out range capable enemies (archers/mages) and possibly throwing/setting some traps. If this is indeed correct, it seems much more interesting than being the archer I initialy thought I would be. If I decide to be archer/figher, I won't have much of this scouting ahead thing as archers are best kept in the back.

It all comes down to personal taste. However, I would just like to hear from experienced players about whether I understood correctly the stealthy scout part and general game mechanics.

Rogues are really versatile and fun to play. It's my favourite class. A Dex based dual wield rogue is the easiest way I.M.O. (High Dex, moderate Cunn and a little of Str)

Al tiers of Device mastery, Dirty fighting line for Coup de Grace, Bellow the belt line for lethality (if your second atribute is Cunn.) and stealth.

Combat talents: Dual weapon training line for dual weapon expert (if you take two daggers you won't need the last talent) and Dual Weapon Sweep line for momentum (don't activate Haste if you have momentum). Whirlwind is cool but not really necessary. Riposte is a nice shot after you get Coup de Grace (dirty fighting + riposte can give you tons of backstabs).

One slot of poison making for the coatings, poisons and grenades. Coertion and Combat Training lines are my choices for skills.

When engaging you will search for backstabs. Alistair or Shale are the best best for tanking I.M.O. but in high levels all the warriors (if nicelly armored) can play this role. If you have Coup de Grace, stunning and paralyze runes and spells can help you a lot. Two daggers as main weapon set and a nice bow as a second weapon. Since you won't need someone to deal with locks and traps you can use a second mage in your party.

I took Duelist and Assassin as specializations. Bard can be also a good choice if you go by the Cunning/Lethality route. Ranger is not my cup of tea. The animal takes a lot of stamina while summoned and is not that usefull if you have a nice tank. Besides it disappears when you change the area and the long cool down time makes it annoying in a dungeon crawl.

My usual party was:

Alistair or Shale (tank)
Wynne (healer and buffer)
Morrigan (debuffer with minor healing and buffing spells)
Me (DPS, locker, trapper, scout and etc)

You will scout, deal with locks and traps, throw grenades and use poisons and face strong enemies face to face due to your high defense.

Take a look at the "Tug" topic in this forum. It brings a different approach but not less fun.

Personally, I enjoy getting STR to base 38 and Stealth wearing heavy armor. With master Archer talent, you do not lose any RoF for ranged attacks, and can melee well. Skip the Lethality tier, and use those slots for Deft Hands, Stealth, etc.

Extremely versatile build, and not as much anxiety over the Special attacks such as Grab, Overwhelm, etc.
