Well, I actually have 2 questions:
1. Is it possible to save Carver, or is his fate sealed?
2. What ever happen to the search option? Maybe I'm going blind, but I don't see it anymore??

Bring Anders with you and the option of making him a Grey Warden will open up. No Anders equal automatic death. If he is not in your party he will join the Templars. But you will loose him one way or another after Act 1. He and Bethany will only pop up in a quest or two as a cameo.

OK, When I played, Carver charged a Huge Ogre and was killed. I take it this is avoidable??

Ooooooooooh you mean in the Opening? He will die no matter what unless you are a Mage. If you are a Mage Bethany will die. You can not change that, someone will die no matter what, Carver if you are a Warrior or a Rogue, Bethany if you are a Mage. It is for plot reasons.
I apologize if I spoiled anything in my previous post, I did not know you meant in the opening since most of these questions have to do with what happens at the end of Act 1.

If you're playing as a warrior/rogue, you will lose Carver, the same way we mages always lose Bethany.
