So among the intermissions the Warden Competition sent was a repeat of the monster design interview, one of the things pointed out was how the different kinds of Darkspawn are corrupted versions of the Fereldan fauna, suggested that the Hurlocks/Genlocks as a species used to be humans/dwarves at some point and so on. We also know (Or think, at least) that the archdemons are corrupted old gods (And at any rate, they look like corrupted dragons, so their origins can be explained one way or the other).

Which made me wonder, the Ogres have been shown prominently, but I can't match them with any untainted creature I've seen so far. So, anyone got an idea what they used to be?

Elves maybe? Qunari? But I would think none would be Dwarves because according to legend Darkspawn are corrupted Magi and Dwarves have no connection to the Fade.

No, the Chantry preaches that it was magisters of the Tevinter Imperium that became the first darkspawns.

Also note the distinction of "the chantry preaches" or "the chantry belives". There's no way to know if it's true or just religious nuttery. The Tevinter Imperium is an enemy of the Chantry of Andraste, after all. As far as I know, the blight creates darkspawns equally, wheter it's wolves, humans, elves.. or dwarves.

I wonder what a darkspawn platipus looks like.

I can't really see the Ogres as being Elves or Qunari, apart from being humanoid there is no similarity between them, they're not even remotely in the same size range.



But... Maybe it's the blighted version of a goat bolted onto 3 elves or something.

There is a difference between being blighted and being darkspawn. But I still think they pumped a goat on steroids and then ripped out it's heart.

 Maybe there were regular old Ogres in the mountains somewhere that got corrupted and grew giant horns and turned purple?!

Darkspawn come from Broodmothers, and Broodmothers are the few females who have been tainted and survived the mutation into a Broodmother.

Each race creates a different type of Darkspawn. Previously Qunari Broodmothers produce Ogres.

I'm not very far into the books or the lore yet, but can't the Blight affect each person differently? Or could it have more of an affect the more you're exposed to it?

Ok, Darkspawn come from Broodmothers, who are females subjected to the darkspawn taint that survive, you fight one in the Deep Roads when you're doing The Paragon Of Her Kind quest.



Ogres are born from Qunari that have become broodmothers.



But the thing that i want to know, is that in Qunari culture, only members of the Beresaad (like Sten) are allowed to go to the human lands, and that the Qunari belief system (The Qun) states that women cant be soldiers... just HOW would the darkspawn manage to get their hands on a female Qunari and manage to get the Ogres that she spawns to Ferelden?

There will always be people who don't follow the rules in every society. I'm sure there are women and men who leave The Qun because they are shunned or because they just don't believe it's values.

No source, no credibility.  I'll agree to the degree that it makes sense... but I need a source on them infos.

It is a codex entry called "About Broodmothers".  That is where that text comes from.

from what i can recall elves are shrieks, genlocks are dwarves, hurlocks are humans and im guessing they find the ogres like they find the archdemon dig and find

Read your codex people. All 4 darkspawn types presented in the game have their origins explained. Ogres are bred from Qunari-made broodmothers.



As for the archdemons, they are indeed old gods, and they took on dragon forms even before their corruption by the darkspawn.

Wonder if darkspawn could make female animals intro broodmothers. Like High Dragons, Bears, wolves, etc. Possibly new breeds of Darkspawn could be the result.
