Imported my DA:O save file, not sure how much that actually affected my DA2 ending, but I cant wait to see if the Hero of Fereldan and Champion of Kirkwall cross paths, and whats going to happen if they do.

But.
BUT.
Wow, the story. Over and over and over during the ending stages I found myself actually making verbal exclamations.
"Oh SHI...." "NO WAY!" "Holy hell!" "AAAAANNNNNDDDDDEEEERRRRSSSS" "Oh no, oh no, no no NOOOOO" "No, don't, don't do tha....awww nooooo"...and on, and on. Or beginning an exclamation, and getting abruptly cut off by speechlessness.
So, yeah. I'd say the story had an impact on me. It's not enough to make me forgive the problems and dislikes I had gameplay/mechanics wise, but the story, oh the story. I want more of the story. Lots more.

You are not the only one, though I hope that future expansions/DLC's continue Hawke's story with his/her love interest in some shape or form. It left me wanting more.
Well, since my opinion was mentioned in the second post of the thread, why carry on?
In fact, I pretty much loved the game in general.

In short, if people had known beforehand that the game was bleak and depressing, the reception toward it might not have been as negative.

But man, I had no idea the result would be so horrific - so much of a WHAT HAVE YOU DONE moment. I wanted to throttle Anders for his terrorist act, but I couldn't bring myself to do it - my poor Hawke clings too hard to the people she cares about, having lost so much. So now my Hawke and Anders are probably fugitives somewhere, watching the world fall to pieces. It breaks my heart to think back on how desperately Hawke tried to keep the peace, only for her lover to be the one to ignite the powder keg. It's an amazingly tragic ending.
And I like that. I'm totally fine having my heart broken once in a while, if the telling was good.

Did anyone else in their ending hear Varric say, "We had to leave The Champion's side eventually, except Isabela."
I was friends with Isabela but wasn't involved with her (Probably the only person in Thedas who hadn't been.)
Thoughts?
I romanced Merrill and Varric says the same thing except says "except Merrill who stayed by the Champion's side"

I really, really hope the DLC's/Expansions are centered around the main characters/romances of the original game. DA:O Awakening was the most depressing expansion of all time. Made one feel like what you did in the DA:O was pointless.
While it's a lot to hope for... It's more possible than it was with DA:O since there are much less variations with Hawke than the Warden.

Finished the 1st playthrough and I romanced with Isabella (the romance scene was not brilliant but enjoyed the story with her) and granted she sort of tried to betray you with the relic but she does come back to give it back etc which to be honest i was expecting.and thought the twists with isabella was very well done especially with the amount she softens up to you.
I will try the others in my next run through of the game

If they were trying to break my heart, then why only bring it home for people who romance Anders. His death greatly saddened me, but why don't the other characters get the chance to leave that kind of emotional scar before the game is over?. Why not have there be a possibility for total slaughter?. That's really the only way they could have ended things the way they did(Everyone leaves, nobody knows where I am...) and still have an emotional impact
It should have either gone with the bittersweet gradual departure of all my companions, or just gone more balls to the wall with the ending. Despite all the insanity, I don't feel like I, personally, paid for it. With the cliffhanger, I'm just not sure how to feel...
Maybe the Waden and Hawke will be party members in Dragon Age 3. Some **** better go down to justify that cliffhanger

I suspect that to a certain extent the game's reception was hurt by its advertising campaign. The sub-title to the ads mentioned watching Hawke's "Rise to Power". One of the trailers was titled "Destiny", and had Kate Mulgrew (Flemeth) providing a voice over talking about seizing Destiny with both hands. But that really wasn't what the game was about. "Rise to Power" implies glory, optimism, and the ability to change things for the better. The primary plotline of the game - particularly starting with Bartrend's betrayal - is instead quite bleak, with impending train wrecks that the player can see long before they occur but that the player is still unable to avert. I suspect that the ads may have left people with impressions that didn't match up with the way the game actually turned out.
In short, if people had known beforehand that the game was bleak and depressing, the reception toward it might not have been as negative.
I haven't read any of the (apparently abundant?) complaints, but this makes sense.
I don't pay any attention to the advertising campaigns, and stay away from the forums to avoid spoilers. This allows me to go into the game with no expectations beyond another epic Bioware story. The vast majority of consumers can't, and won't, act that way, but it works for me.
I thought this game was fantastic from start to finish. I like the mechanics changes (though this isn't the place to discuss it), and I felt the story probably had more consistent depth than any RPG I've played.
A large portion of the quests had a level of depth and realism to them uncommon in most games. They went far beyond the typical "retrieve this item for this person", or whatnot. There were some of those in there, which is a good thing. There were many, though, that involved several "stops", with dynamic shifts in understanding each step of the way. Seeing these in Secondary/Side-quests is impressive.
This game did an amazing job of getting my emotions involved. Anders' trainwreck, even though I correctly guessed his intention, was epic! I was home alone, talking to a video game character (WTF, Anders?!) That's awesome.

lol, I felt the same way! My char was just like "..." to life at that point. OF COURSE I have to fight Orsino. OF COURSE Meredith is crazypants insane. OF COURSE this happens to me. If the Champion's story continues, my char isn't going to be the same person. She was goody-goody, but I think the actions of the game have really slapped her to the other side of the spectrum.Jimmy Fury wrote...

That's exactly why I love the way this game turned out. It challenges your character, Hawke, to change and adapt. My chara was pretty blunt and business-like as is, all that just put her pretty close to apathy.
