I loved Dragon Age II.
Playing it on the Xbox the first time I used it as a Hack and Slash, then on harder difficulties I played it as most of a strategy game. This diversity was very attractive. Not only was the style of game-play up to the user, so was the story.
The story that Dragon Age II left was very open and broad. The world has just been changed, we still are left to wonder of the new threat the Gray Wardens face, and you have the Seeker as well as the Divine completely open.
If the story continues with Hawke(possible as an expansion like Awakening) you have a few options. I don't know if you have a full game like a Dragon Age III out of it. There is plenty of room left in the game to do so, but I'd imagine a smaller expansion to stabilize the world might be a good idea...Depending on where they want to play out DAIII
There are plenty of areas to play in also. Antiva, Orlais, Tevinter. Never even been there.
So who knows? But DA has plenty of room to continue expanding.
My only complaint about DAII - Don't re-use the same maps.
