I didn't know there were people who didn't like the companion armor system. Well, I liked it. Personally, I hated having to dress up my characters in Origins. It was a lot of work and only to find that I did not like how they looked after. In DA2, I'm finding it very easy to sort armor and sell what I don't need. Having to deal with only accessories is way easier.
However, I do see how it would be nice to have some choice. At least, in ME2 you could choose which costume you wanted your companion to wear. I think DA2 would have benefited from being able to change companion looks in that manner. Overall though, I loved the armor system in DA2. I hope the next game has the same system with maybe options to choose costumes for companions.

Back to the more prominent reason why we are having this discussion ;
Companion armour.
There just isn't any.
You can get upgraded version with extra bonuses, but the armour itseslf is only graphical throughout the entire game, which comes to give me the idea that EA/Bioware spent more time on making the promo video then they did on the entire game.
END.
DLC = Buy them? Sure , I'll buy them, which defeats the point of me arguing over this, since EA won and got my money, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Well, it worked for me on first playthrough.
And still, it wouldn't bother me on the next one, if I didn't find any good stuff for mages\\rogues, which I can't use for s**t, being a warrior. Looks plain silly.
OK, I'll just wait for proper mod from DANexus, I don't think it's so hard to make even with no SDK released. Patience everyone

But that means we - the buyer
has to make our own stuff for a game company that couldn't be half-assed to finish the job.
I think EA does this for fun

I don't mind this decisions. What I do mind is that they didn't follow up on it and at least design a different set of clothes for each act.

...... You can change the way the person looks by doing two things / all upgrades for their armor/ and by achiveing 100% in either freind or rival...... so yes you can change their apperance

also if you have trouble finding the upgrade for the armor, its in the other section in the shop you are in. (robe shop, high town) (armor shop lowtown)tailor, lowtown) basicly every store has an upgrade one time or another ex for weapon shops. The only weapon shop that does sell uprades for armour is the dallish one in summer mount for Marrill. Most of the upgrades are in the 2nd act and the final one is in the 3rd .Your brother/sisters only upgrade is when you do the birth right qwest to reclaim your gran parents will. You can always just buy the guide for like $19.99 whicth is like 23.42 after taxes just depending on where you live.... or just google it ......

THE POINT IS = they still make us pay for something that many of us would not deem finished, a game that is junk compared to the origins campaign and graphics _O_

Campain & graphics? DAO was universally panned by every critic for having bad graphics. & the story? Its your average cleiched fight nation threatening super evil just like Mass Effect & many others. DA 2s Story is personal & actually quite original if you can look past the fact that there is no archdemon in it.
Anyways... I actually like having unique armor for each of my characters. It gives them more personality.

Laidlaw also came out and said that it wasn't perfect and that they were most likely going back to a way you can equip your companions while keeping them looking unique.

this is my pet hate. played as mage and 2 thirds of the armours are now useless because no one else can be equipped. i even screwed up my stats so i could equip some decent looking options now that arcane warrior isnt an option.
the no armour equipping option on squad mates makes even less sense in ME2! going into battles NOT WEARING ARMOUR!?!?!? and wearing just a face mask in a vacume, but the shepard has to wear a helmet? urgh.
sigh. stupid.

As someone who looks for some form of realism in their game there are some things I don't enjoy, like how no one knows you are a mage even though you just slammed them with a fireball.
Companion armour I loved though. We shouldn't be aloud to dress them however we like, they are our companions not our dolls. Otherwise everyone (almost) would put pants on Isabela and goddammit she doesn't freaking wanna. In convos Varric suggests a outfit change and they say no to him too. In DAO I also felt like your companions are there with you for the entire year on the road fighting... everyday, DA2 they have there own lives and stuff they are doing outside of you. No I agree with Bioware they should get to wear what they want, not what I want.
On a diff note I am having an issue, I have found all the upgrades, and have either maxed out friend or rivalry on all characters, I am not getting the bonuses and their armor, even after I put runes in it, still only has two stars? Am I messing something up or is it a glitch?

I wouldn't mind the armour if they changed it every now and then, and you could pick slot in different upgrades that complement your build.
The way it is now just sucks though.

It is possible to mod companion armour's so they have the same design but a different appearance e.g. colours/color? and straps and belts and things can be removed or added but for those who play Xbox or Playstation there stuck with what they have.

not sure if anyone has brought this up but i just found something out that i think would interest a lot of you.
you can equip your human companions with weapons (other races will get the stats benefits from weapons but won't change their appearance since all the armor are made for the main human character's appearance code, unless you completely edit their body and face appearance codes to human substitutes but that would ruin the character the story was intended for). edit your save file with gff4 editor.
0. MAKE A BACK UP OF YOUR SAVE FILE located in step 2.
1. open gff4 editor.
2. file - open: Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age 2\\Characters\\*character name*\\Saves\\Slot *#*\\*name of save file*.
3. go down to when you see SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST double click or click on + sign.
4. look for SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
go down to SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE double click you'll see:
- SAVEGAME APPEARANCE_TYPE
SAVEGAME APPEARANCE_TYPE <-- edit code (####) to 15 for male 16 for female.
5. go up to the first line under SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS you'll see:
- 16204 SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
+ 0 gen00fl_aveline
+ 1 gen00fl_carver
+ 2 gen00fl_bethany
etc. double click any number with companion's name you want to edit.
6. click on first row TEMPLATERESREF - find the code below it in a text box which should say for example gen00fl_carver and change it to default_player. Do this for every character you want to edit:
- 16204 SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
+ 0 gen00fl_aveline
+ 1 gen00fl_carver
- 2 gen00fl_bethany,...
3 TEMPLATERESREF gen00fl_bethany <-- click and edit code to default_player. CLICK SAVE UNDER EDIT BOX!!!
7. file save as whatever you want or replace the file you have backed up with a copy.
8. load and enjoy. please edit if anyone spot a problem.
p.s. sometimes your character loads up naked.. but you can re-equip your armor to make it show up again.

Don't know how you 'see' stars for companions (maybe I just never noticed them) but 'two stars' represent equipement suited for your level. This rather crappy measuring system is why some two star rings are better than three star rings. Three stars is one level above, four is two, etc. The reason they are always two stars on companion armour is BECAUSE THEIR ARMOUR ACTUALLY LEVELS as you do, increasing their armour score. This is rpobably because armour scores actually get LESS EFFECTIVE over the game and you have to constantly update your gear just to stay on par with where you were, statwise. If they didn't level, your companions would faint at the sight of a nug by the later levels.

All I can say about this is that I'm glad there's a mod out there to open up their inventories.
