Why so much junk?

Forget "challenging" - it's more entertaining.

I want to go into a dungeon - an old thaig and find dwarven antiques. A sentence or two about their purpose and use - tiny "Codex" snippets that add flavor to the game.

I would give up weapon/armor accessorizing so quickly for more "junk" with a purpose. That purpose would be "roleplay".

Also - give me merchants that buy specific types of junk for more. So, when I go into that old thaig - I go back to the human archeologist that's fascinated with Pre-Blight dwarf society. But - if I also try to sell him "Dragon's Bladder" he's not going to be interested. However - I think there's a rogue who can use "Dragon's Bladder" for "something" he won't tell you about - but, he's willing to pay a pretty coin.

Make it a game unto itself - I can be a merchant of sorts. I mean - it's not like DA: 2 isn't simulating something a little more down to earth than "World Savior".

But please don't make "Junk" ever take up space in my backpack ever again - when I was in certain places I threw most of it away to make room for the weapons/armor because most of it didn't seem to sell for more than a handful of silver.

I like that there are useless items, but I dislike that there is a Junk section in the inventory into which they are automatically added.

I would rather the game let us figure out which items are useless, rather than having the UI element hand us meta-game information like that.

This.

And I miss the little descriptions they had for lots of the "junk" in DA:O.  Humorous little quips about the "moth eaten shoes" would have been nice.  Maybe it's just me but I read that stuff and sometimes chuckled.  *Sigh*...

That's a pretty ridiculous request.

Why?  I don't like having quest items set aside, either.  Everything should go in one place and let me decide what's important.

Even Beerfish agreed with me, and Beerfish never agrees with me.

I agree.  It's the little details that make a game really shine.  DA:O had this to an extent.  I miss the snippets!

Being able to sell junk all at once is more convenient. I like trading, but that would just get in the way ( it's not a big inconvenience though, usually ). Granted, a 'display all' section like in Origins could have been done too...

Which you know, roleplaying games should have.

You know what would make for better immersion? Not giving 90% of the items generic names like "belt."

Forget junk, I'd like that for usable items.

And some way to figure out what class clothing is. Seriously, what was wrong with light, medium, heavy, massive armor classes? Argent and Crimson Red, wtf does that mean? So far, I'm just kind of guessing about armor for my character, based on the picture.

lol I agree 100% with this statement.  Didn't anyone at Bioware think to look through a thesaurus at least?

Playing Devil's Advocate here, but if you just find that belt in a trash barrel you probably wouldn't have been digging around in In-Character anyway, it kinda makes sense. My belt, if you found it, would just be a "belt" to you. But to me, its "Cy's Belt of Chastity" which incurrs a penalty to charisma =P

But you're right.

Certainly, but the automatic sorting removes what I think is an important part of gameplay.

That's completely fair. But going with that I would know what color, what material it was made out of and what condition it is in. I'd also know if it was a toolbelt, dress belt, etc.

I know that in all RPG, there are special items and regular ones. But the amount of generic, non-descriptive items kind of stands out. Use an item name randomizer for non-special items. Shiny belt of the apocalypse or burnished belt of the bratwurst. Something. Anything.

And yes, DA:O had plenty of generic items. But when you inspected them, you at least got a one sentence description. Even the lowly iron ring. First, it was an iron ring, not "ring." Second it had a nice description about its design.

Seems like a lot of the names are placeholders. Or maybe just "streamlined." :o

I had rather hoped that there was an actual reason for all the junk in this game, like a new crafting skill that allows you to combine all the necessary parts together to make a good item or weapon, like you did with Herran and .. the blacksmith whose name escapes me in Awakening. That would have been nice. Still alittle hopeful for that to be honest.

On the contrary I don't want to spend 20-30 min every few hours reorganizing my stuff so features like that is good for stuff like that.  Yes I am a pack rat in rl too lol wish I had that feature in rl lol

Everything's a junk item except for a few key weapons.

Armors are only useable by Hawke and thus my mage only wore whatever I could find, which were quickly replaced by the Champion gear....which I got the final piece for 4 minutes before the finale started.

A lot of items to sell.

I also had trouble finding good daggers for Isabella, this would have been a big problem but I found myself not bringing her along 80% of the time anyway...so...no win or loose there.

Glad you put quotes on "challenging", Shat. It's not like anyone who can read couldn't figure out what's junk and what's not.

The thing is sifting through that isnt fun and just adds time that isnt meaningful at all to the game. I dont understand why people insist that tedium be included in every facet of an RPG.

I want to have to decide which items are important to my character.  If he discards things willy-nilly, I want him to pay the price (or reap the benefits) for that.  If he hoards everything, I want him to pay the price (or reap the benefits) for that.

The game shouldn't be making these decisions for me.

All that "junk" helped get my immigrant butt into the Deep Roads. I ain't gonna complain. I cheered a couple times finding broken gems when I knew it'd get me enough silver to buy some more Gernades.
