Nightmare may be a different ball game altogether but on Hard i find a high defense Fenris (you can put 2 defense runes into his armor and i got his defense against mobs to 74% without party buffs as early as level 12) much more effective than Aveline as he can deal AOE damage like scythe, whirldwind and spirit pulse.

Well... It is different. Party approach must be organismic, with every party member highly specialized: i. e. my protagonist = party damage, Aveline = party hp pool, mages = party crowd control. Balanced approach (each party memeber is multi-functional) does not work as well as it does on Hard, unless you are soloing the game -- then you are forced to be balanced by definition.

To have high damage output, any Rogue has to stack CriticalRange attribute (+ crit dmg talents and gear). In my opinion, Duelist spec is counter-productive to this goal, as you essentially sacrifice either Assassin or Shadow to go Duelist.

I assume you are playing on Nightmare. What is your party setup?

I'm playing on hard actually... maybe Duelist falters on nightmare.  My setup is DW rogue PC, Fenris for more DPS, Varric for range and Anders for healing and support.

Note that I am not saying I am right and you are wrong, even on hard I am having a rough time with many fights.  If Duelist actually sucks I wouldn't be surprised, I just think my rogue is honestly the best character in my party for killing stuff, which when I have Fenris is saying something.

@ tsukitwo,

I assume it's because your mages are getting knocked back - yeah, it's really annoying and I consider it a bug, everytime your characters get knocked back they cancel the last command you gave them, i've had many mages die because they kept forgetting to take their health potions, i've had to tell a mage 5 times before he finally drank one - hopefully they fix that soon, and improve the game's framerate with non-dx11 cards ^^
