Hey all -
I'm on my second playthrough now, my first was a protection warrior, now I'm playing the role of healer.
I didn't buy the guide, i generally don't like to do that until I've played through a time or two on my own, but now I'm curious about some things.
On my new character, I stopped in to the Hanging Man at night and in the back of the building in a small room was a mysterious elvish girl named "A Friend" who I spoke with, gained some exp and apparently some gold for no purpose. Is this a bug, or is this a part of some hidden questline that I'm just not aware of?

It's the bandits that spawn at night, you must have learnt where their lair was and cleared it out. "A Friend" appears when you exit the first lair you cleared (There's one for the Docks, Hightown and Lowtow that I've found so far) and tells you to find her at the Hanging Man (she just says the line, no cutscene).
