Which map? The in-game map, or the maps shown in the player guide? If it's the maps in the guide, then the flare symbol means that you'll find something important, like a codex entry, a crafting item, or a rare/unique/quest item, there.

The world maps. When you leave the area and the map shows up to let you choose where to go. Where you can view places like low town, high town, and the free marches.

A pulse/flare? I know that the symbols on the map have a pulsing ring around them to signify the location you're currently at, and (if you're playing on a small/SDTV) you may not see that beside either Gamlen's house or the Hawke Estate there is sometimes a pulsing letter (mail symbol) that means that a letter has arrived at your desk.

Yea, I've noticed the flare around places while I'm there, but they show up other places as well at the same time. That is why I am confused as to what they are. I have seen three places have them at once. I haven't been able to relate them to quests either

For instance, right now I'm in the Hawke estate and when I go to leave the map comes up. The Hawke estate is has the pulsing ring around it and when I click RT to view the free marches, the wounded coast has one as well.

Hm. Not sure. Was the Wounded Coast the last place you were at before travelling to the Hawke Estate, perhaps?

Not sure, I'll watch to see if maybe that's what it is.

I think your right canad, the flares show current and past locations. Thank you. Seems like that should have been obvious lol
