I rented the original mass effect some time ago and the same with mass effect 2 and explored and beat both of them comprehensivly. Now since i did this my xbox got th red ring of death and i was forced to send it back but retained my detachable harddrive with all my saves on it.
The problem happened recently when i found both mass effect and mass effect 2 for super cheap at a used game store bought them and then almost threw my controller at my tv when both game's saves could not be found equaling about 80 hours of gameplay washed away. I went into my memory and can see the saves but its not allowing me to transfer them to the current counsel as it says they are by an unknown profile and that they cannot be transfered between profiles.
While i would play the games again i would rather be playing the orignal files i had in a new game and am worried that if my xbox explodes on me again i will have to invest all that time again so that all the choices i made remain for the final game. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have no clue on how to fix this problem for both mass effect 1 and 2.

So you are using the same Gamertag that they were first made with?
Did you play any DLC the first time? Do you have any DLC now with the copies you purchased?

ok i managed to recover my mass effect 1 save by copying the save file but it will not let me copy the save file for mass effect 2 as it says its from an unknown user as for my gamertag it is the same as before and i have not had this problem with other titles i have. Also i did not play any dlc the first time

Well, since you can go off your ME1 save, you can import from there for ME2.
ME2 ng+ does not transfer paragon/renegade points, and researched upgrades don't transfer either, so at least you have your ME1 Shep to work with.

You say you use the same Gamertag, but have you recovered the Gamertag by any chance?
