I'm going through my second playthrough as a Rogue on Nightmare (DW, Assassin) and I discovered the most fascinating thing about my companions: The family dog is one of the most useful AI partners Bioware put in a game.

The dog attacks ranged mobs half the time, is able to somehow hold aggro better than Aveline and has a 30s res timer if need be.

Maybe it's sheer luck, but I notice this time and time again with the dog and was wondering if anyone else gets the same benefits as I do using the dog.

I have a question for you- I've named the dog, but when I leave Gamlen's house, why isn't he available for a companion?

You always have to summon him every time you go to a new area.

The dog is a sustained ability that Hawke has, not a companion.

The dog is awesome. He's saved my butt so many times now it's not even funny anymore.

Yea.. I'm afraid I missed something. Sorry, but how do you get a dog?

Go to Gamlen's house and the Dog should be there for you to start a conversation to name him/her.  To use the dog it is a sustained ability so needs to be summoned to your side.

If you look at your abilities tree, on the bottom right you should see a little icon floating there on its own. Click on it, and then drag the dog to your hotbar.

btw ..... Dog is great for tanking. Seriously, he generates enough aggro to divert 2 rogues into backstabbing him at the same time despite my 2h warrior/vanguard going to town on them

The only downside is you have to remember to re-summon him every area-change. It's annoying as all hell.

If you have the Black Emporium DLC, you'll automatically get him at the start of the game's prologue.

Terrible implementation. I had no idea how to find/use the dog either after meeting and naming him until I asked here. Then you have to resummon him for every new area. It's really freaking annoying.

Somebody wasn't thinking very hard about how to implement the dog. I mean a simple free mod for Dragon Age: Origins gave you essentially the same thing, Dog available as a 5th free companion, but without any of this cumbersome crap to go along with him. He was always there, and he wasn't hidden away in an obscure area of the abilities page and you could even still assign tactics for him.

Bioware seriously missed the boat on this one. When I heard about the preorder and Black Emporium, I figured it'd be just like the mod for DA:O. Boy was I wrong.

Tactics: Self/Any Mode:Puppy

As soon as you take control of someone else the dog will be summoned if you've forgotten.

Didn't occur to me at first, but was extremely helpful when I turned it on.
