I've as best I can avoided any information about DA2 prior to it's release and even now whilst playing through to avoid spoilers, but this one is really starting to confuse me.
I have a male Hawke, Rogue and I've just finished the Deep Roads and moved up in the world a little. Now up to this point when talking to my companions in their homes there have been various little conversations, but the heart options have really confused me the most.
Given what is said when selecting the heart options, I'm under the impression that these are the romantic choices that the player can make to initiate a love interest in a romantic way. However what confuses me is that I have maybe had one or two such dialogue options with Isabel and Merril, and about five or six such options with Anders and Fenris. Now I understand that there are two bi-sexual love interests, but I'm getting really disturbed that character can't be friends with Anders or Fenris without it blatantly being a romantic friendship.
Am I missing something here? Do I basically have to tell them to shove it and be a rival to them if I don't want to sex them up?

Actually, rivals can get sexed up, too. Sometimes even more. Just avoid the hearts and you're set.

No. Only if you select the flirt options for the five who are romance interests will a romance initiate. Rivalry/friendship has nothing to do with that.

What's forcing you to hit the romance options? As I recall there is ALWAYS a perfectly good alternative. Just because they appear doesn't mean your character is thinking them or will say them? It's your choice.

Romance dialogue is not to build friendship, it's to initiate/further romance with whoever you desire. Friendship builds through acting in ways a character agrees with. You earn a lot more "rep" through taking them on quests and choosing actions and dialogue they agree with, think about who the character is and what they feel.
Aveline respects laws and has a soft spot for Templars considering she was married to one. Anders dislikes Blood Magic, Templars and The Circle. Fenris dislikes magic and well I just got him so I don't know much about him but I imagine he follows the same system.

There isn't always a good alternative. One dialogue with Anders had two heart options and broken heart option... how is that given a good alternative?

Broken heart options just turn down a possible romance or end an existing romance, sounds like the choice you are looking for.

Pickthe broken heart one. I did. He said he understood it was strictly professional and we went on to be great friends by helping his cause

Okay, I just wish the actual words they say and the tone of voice conveyed fit better with the options in some cases. Good to know that romance options shouldn't affect friendship/rivalry though.

I managed to get friendship with both of them with no sexing.

Same here. I actually haven't checked if I'm at 100% yet, but if I'm not, I'm close.
