i like both, DAO story feels a little more epic but DA2 feels more focused (despite the dodgy time jumps)...DA2 combat is more fun but DAO had better classes and customisation for PCs and companions...DA2 is more stable than DAO on my PC....DA2 visuals are better but has cut 'n' paste scenery...talking Hawke is slightly better than mute warden...

I dont know...i like them both...same as ME1 and 2

DA:O is a far superior product. I would give the edge to DA2 in: Character Models and armor graphics but those are the only two categories I would suggest DA2 having the lead in.

The Warden wasn't 'mute'. It was supposed to be YOU talking so you could use your imagination for the voice. I don't need a cutscene showing me my own lips moving and broadcasting my voice to know what I say and how I say it.

I kinda like hearing my character speak.

well it wasnt so much the lack of voice, more the complete lack of facial expression during those scenes...very wooden

but i still prefer Lady Hawke...she has a sexy voice

There were things about Dragon Age 2 that I liked better than Dragon Age: Origins, and vise versa.

Some people call both a flawed game but I'm not quite getting this... In what way was DAO flawed? Everything I didn't like about the game is just a tiny nagging thing - the 'nightmare' difficulty was a bit too easy (and 'normal' difficulty probably a bit too hard), the romance scenes were rubbish, the random events when travelling happened too often, and the gift system was a bit too dominant. I can't think of a single other problem with the game.

In DA2, the problems are fundamental design decisions. The companion interaction is a fraction of what it once was, there is no real plot or story - simply a series of small stories that don't connect much - the three acts are completely unrelated, the combat is essentially button mashing, the decisions have no real impact - e.g. the crazy ending, the entire game is set in one city, maps are continuously reused...

@Alex Kershaw,
The problem with DAO(according to some) at the time and to some extent still is the bugs. There were dex bugs, mine bugs (especially in Awakening) and others. Some felt the Fade was long and boring. The Deep Roads was long, repetitive and boring. You could quickly run out of conversations with your companions.
If you go back to the forums two rears ago you will find the same kind of spirited debate.
Gamers were saying that DAO was not the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate.
The new IP was junk and go back to the D & D ruleset.
I like both games.

Origins was better in every way.

FYI I have seriously tried to find at least one thing better in DA2 than in Origins, but for the life of me cannot.

Exactly!

Maybe the technical side of graphics performance, but I hesitate to conclude anything, because the artstyle of DA2 was so different and cartoonfied compared to DAO, that there's no way of saying how the DA2 engine would handle the beutiful evironments of DAO.

DAII, but I did love Origins too. DAII combat was better balanced. I love the Arishok and Merrill.

Happy to say DAII, without reservation, as an old school cRPG and BioWare fan. (I'm finding it very hard to post on these forums at the moment, but I'd like to represent my opinion occasionally.)

just found an old bookmark to this forum. i had already forgotten da2... it is still bad and i have no intention to buy any ea/bioware product in the future... but nice, that people still talk about, if this game is good or not... and i love the new giraffe-dog-spam ;)

Origins. Origins touched something inside of me, DA2 didn't.

The combat was repetetive and twitchy, and just felt like a chore. Hawke was railroaded into about everything she did, and apart from Aveline and Varric I found the companions two-dimensional, whiny and/or juvenile. The elves are ugly now, and I can't role-play my character anymore, because the game does it for me.

In Origins I had a certain framework I had to deal with, but I could entirely make up my characters personality. I had freedom. I could make decisions that actually affected the game. I could experiment endlessly with different builds stat and skill-wise... I've played through Origins eight times (not counting the chars I didn't finish with) and I still haven't tried out everything.

I feel, however, no desire to play DA2 a second time.

Origins by miles and miles. It's like comparing a Mercedes to a Pontiac.

I thought Dragon Age 2 had better combat and graphics.  The story.....I don't know.  Dragon Age 2 was more of a personal story, and Dragon Age: Origins was more of an "adventure."

I'm a little surprised that a few people have said that they found the relationships on DA2 far more realistic and thus a reason for their preference. I assume these are coming from people who have never had a relationship or live in an idealised one in their head. There was nothing realistic about the relationships in DA2, even the character weren't believable.

to be fair there was never a realistic relationship in any of the Bioware games. The reason, real relationships are pretty boring (for most folks). Relationships in media are usually believable at most.
But I agree with the notion the DA2 had a few relationships that stretched it with their believability. (if that's what you meant)

Dragon age 2 is utter garbage and not just by Bioware standards. Comparing it with Origins is a grievous insult to Origins.
