Which is better: Dragon Age: Origins or Dragon Age 2?

All 3 of these handedly go to Dragon Age: Origins.
I prefer the combat of Dragon Age 2, and I hope they stick to a similar system for the next installment. However, there are elements of DA:O combat that are missed, and going forward, I think they need to continue to iterate on the combat system.

My main criticism of DAII comes down to its encounter design. Wave after wave of unintelligent mob isn't interesting. And it can make the combat feel like a chore. Hard and Nightmare are much better than other modes. But even when you turn it up to them, there are still too many times when the combat feels like a grind that you want to skip so that you can get on with the story.
Note that I'm being critical of the encounter design and not of the combat in general. I felt that speeding it up was a push. It's no better or worse. I feel that giving the closing moves to rogues and warriors was a good thing. And I felt cross-class combos were a good thing. In general, I'd say that the mechanics were improved and that Nightmare was more challenging. But the encounter design really marred an otherwise good game. That and the brevity of Act III.

Completely agree with you,da2 has no story no ambition as dao had.
Does this sound familiar?
Someone joins a mysterious order. Exceptionally skilled, they lead a ragtag band of friends to victory against the forces of darkness.
Yep, it's practically every fantasy ever written. DA:O had no story ambition.
originality is not as important as quality, da2 lacks quality and focus.
i would put the reasons but this is a non-spoiler forum.
let me make this perfectly clear:
DAO>>>>>DA2.

DA2 was better...buggy, and yeah, some things were taken out...but it was definately a better game than Origins. Each game has its positives and negatives, but in the end, DA2 takes a step towards where Dragon Age needs to be.
you mean a Mass Effect in a fantasy world?
yeah, that's exactly it needs....

Which had a better plot, characters and such is going to vary. Overall I liked DAO more because I liked Morrigan and Alistair so much. In addition, I liked the Dark Ritual decision more than any decision I had to make in DAII. In general, I felt that DAII's characters were very cool as well as the Qunari storyline. I felt the mage-templar story was lacking--though I liked where things ended up even if the road there could have been better.

I liked being able to decide what your team wore in DA:O. Graphics are smoother in DA2. I also miss the different races and story that you could choose from in DA:O. Overall it is too tough to decide. Both have their ups and downs.
I agree^_^

One of the things I loved about Origens, being able to talk to your companions frequently, was removed. Now I feel as if I hardly know these people in DA2. Sad....

imo, both DA2 and DAO were great in their own right.
ME2 on the other hand.. not so much. ME1 is better on every possible level.
for my thoughts on the differences between ME2 and DA2, i did a thread about that a while back:

Planet exploration in ME was painful, as were elevators. Overall though, I agree, ME was a better game with more significant choices and a deeper plot.

No damn paraphrases, dorf PC, more responsive combat, overall better art direction, less painful gameplay/story segregation issues.

I must be the only one that thought act II was very mediocre, some irrelevant stuff happened and suddenly boom the Arishok suddenly becomes a threat after years of picking his nose being completly apathetic, hmmm maybe I should replay the game I obviously missed something there judging by the other people here.

It's all in the build up and character motivation. The Arishok is clearly upset with having spent 3 years in this craphole called Kirkwall. He rages but the Qun demands that he stay his blade and continue his slow search for the relic.
And while he's doing this, bas continue to bother him with murder, theft, conspiracies, complacency, and generally dishonest behavior. All the while treating them as threats when they have never been threatening, they even sent a peaceful delegate to the Viscount...who was promptly murdered.
And then it gets too much. The Arishok will order this madness and then find the relic.
It made sense. The characters, all the major players the Viscount, Arishok, Grand Cleric, and Petrice all act in character, have clear motivations, and the tension continues to build throughout the entire act until it explodes.
It's easily the best act of the game. The first act is about nothing and the third act is about three missions long.
