There is a reason DAO won awards and critical accolades. I don't see DA2 winning gaming awards. DAO was flawed but fantastic. DA2 is flawed and mediocre. My biggest disappointment with DA2 is that I saw it's potential epic-ness and knew what it could have been.

If there is ONE argument that won't work for me it's the "Look at how many awaaaaaaaaaards DAO won!" routine.

I'll explain why.......

With opera. Yes, the "DAO" of music as far as I am concerned.

"Opera Singers" like Sarah Brightman, Paul Potts, Andrea Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins win MAJOR awards for their "operatic" recordings. Katherine Jenkins ruining Carmen's Habanera (Bizet) is one of the most watched "operatic" clips on Youtube. Even though she CANNOT sing this piece. Technical fact, she cannot. SHE gets awards for THIS caterwauling:

www.youtube.com/watch

While this lady whom no one outside of the "core fans" knows well enough to care about her winning awards, will never receive a tenth of Jenkins' accolades:

www.youtube.com/watch

Yet she sings this to PERFECTION. (Technically. And her interpretation also dwarfs Jenkins' juvenile "acting").

All there is to awards, only that the gaming industry is even more shallow than the classical music biz these days.;)

Well that and the repetitive dungeons/areas really made it feel as if I played six playthroughs with two. Sorry, dev team, *cringes*, but it did. Wounded Coast was soooo pretty but I got so sick of it in the end.

If you really think DA2 won't win ANY of awards, then that is simply ignorent. It will win awards, probaly not the big ones (best RPG, GOTY ect) but it will win awards.

Maybe. And you're right. I don't like broad generalizations. I meant big ones. My apologies.

Sorry, comparing opera to a game? Well, then we could say that if DA2 wins awards (to my mind they catawauled that song of fixed narrative, among other things) than if they win big awards it is becaue they bought them? That those that give them to the game that is mediocre are only doing so because they fear the loss of money for advertising etc? Not saying this is true, but I have heard that argument in regards to the professional reviews from gaming sites.

And yes, DAO did, despite it's flaws, deserve the major awards they got. Did it have things that could have been improved? Oh yes (after all not even great singers of opera are flawless). But it deserved the major awards it got.

Edited because I can't type and be clear for crap. UGH! How can I have fun debates if I can't communicate. BLEH! Sorry P and Mr. House I should quit trying today. ROFL!

I agree, i dont think you could compare this incidence to the music industry...

Persephone makes a good point but thats the music industry all over. A lot of artists who are not mainstream/popular do amazing work that does not get the awards/accolades rightly deserved, those often go to the mainstream artists.
DA2 was the game which was made for a mass audience, in a sense that game was supposed to be the mainstream 'artist' compared to Origins which was merely a side project to begin with, yet still ended up winning the major accolades and awards. DA2 on the other hand won't see that type of sucess despite it being tailored towards the mainstream.

I'm a troll because I actually like DA2; because I am prepared to defend it; and because I think 90% of the complaints people have about DA2 are non-sense?  I'm a troll because I honestly, coherently, and rather politely answered the question that the thread was created for, whereby I was immediately and unpolitely harrassed?  I'm a troll simply because I have an unpopular opinion and I can state exactly WHY I have that opinion?  I'm a troll because I think it's okay to defend my perspective against someone who's first response toward me was a harrassement and whose subsequent replies toward me were just insults including name calling: moron and ******?

So like - are you guys ever going to stop blowing one another, or should we all just come back some other time when you aren't stuffing each others' face?

And quite frankly I don't give two beans about your opinion either. I don't give a damn that you and I disagree, but any merits to your arguments just got negated when you made these comments. I like people who don't agree with me, politely. You just proved you aren't all that polite.

Well, the statment I made there clearly wasn't directed toward you.  It was directed to an entirely different person for reasons that literally had nothing to do with you.  So I'm not sure how that has any bearing on you, nor why your opinion of me is somehow "not worthy to be bothered with" simply because I set someone in their place for harrassing me.

As for discussing the differences - I can totally discuss objections - politely, even.  I've demonstrated that in this thread plenty.  But I'm not going to sit through a "discussion" where I'm being harrassed and provoked and then someone calls me a troll out of left field for whatever reasons, and pretend like I'm okay with that in a polite way.  I'm sorry if my attitude toward these people isn't up to your standards?

Now, if you would like to have a civil conversation about anything, then I am game.  Please, by all means - let's go.  And I say that with absolutely no condescending insinuation.  Thus far, you haven't really been unnecessarily a jerk to me, except for the fact that you have essentially made an assumption of me based on my dealings with someone who was griefing me.  But, I can let that slide, because hey - I'm a nice guy and I actually do enjoy talking about these things when I am not being derailed with harrassment, name-calling, and just generally unprovoked and unnecessarily sour communication.

Been taking tips from the Mike Laidlaw school of interviews have we?

A good portion of the ensuing conversations can be summed up by
"These are non issues and blown out of proportion"
"We actually think that they are important and we didn't like the changes"
"No they're not, they're not issues."

That is not a very good summarization of what actually took place.  It was more like:

Me -  "These are non-issues and they are completely blown out of proportion, and here's why: reason 1, reason 2, etc."

-  You're wrong, because DAO won all these awards!

Me -  "Again, these are non-issues and they are completely blown out of proportion, and here's why: reason 1, reason 2, etc."

-  "Let me completely disregard everything you said and instead say that you should respect my opinion; moron!"

Me -  "Umm - no?  Even if I was going to with that attitude of yours, you still have not given very good reasons."

-  "Because it's my opinion - that's my reason, and you should respect that; ******!"

Me -  "I'm sorry, because it's your opinion is not a good reason for me to accept that.  Try again?"

-  "Stop being a troll! and respect my opinion!!!"

Me -  "I'm sorry that you think I am a troll because I disagree with you and I require actual proof of your claims, but beyond that; there is something in your mouth making it hard for you to speak properly."

That.... is actually a more accurate summarization of what took place.

Dragon Age 2's Act 2 was on par with Dragon Age: Origins. Act 1 could of
been on par too if there were more reprecussions for your choices. Act 3 just felt bad and rushed. Numerous things made me feel that way, and this is a no spoiler section, so I won't go into detail. I really think the game could of benefited from an Act 4.

I hated Dragon Age 2 when it came out in March. Since then I've warmed up to it, but it still hasn't won me over as a great or memorable game. I think it is good -- not bad, but not great.

Ninjas falling from the sky, Spiders falling from an empty blue sky, soldiers dropping from a ceiling with no beams in a house, and men in full plate falling from rooftops onto stone below without breaking their bones are all immersion killing and not realistic.  So are dogs and people appearing in a corner with no doorway, and no one has ropes? So logically the waves and spawns don't make sense to me. How'd I do.

Me -  "I'm sorry that you think I am a troll because I disagree with you and I require actual proof of your claims, but beyond that; there is something in your mouth making it hard for you to speak properly."

That.... is actually a more accurate summarization of what took place.

Actually was it like that in case of "trolling" ?. What a bunch of LIES.

This is called 'Trolling'. At least it's nice that you have introduced who you are.

Admitedly, yes - I did say things to get you mad.... because you
were being beligerant, harrassing, abusive, and unproductive.  I also actually made sense in
my posts while actually being productive.  Later, I simply added flare to what I was originally saying from the beginning.  I don't feel like my summarization neglected the
part where I was being negative toward you.  I felt the unconstituted "I'm sorry" characterized my condescending nature toward you very effectively in this case.  After all, no one says, "I'm sorry" to someone after they have been insulted, unless they are trying to be condescending.

And that's beside the point.  Yes, I admit - I was being a jerk to you after two or three posts of you abusing me, harrassing me, and calling me names, simply because you disagreed with me - which means you were not respecting my opinion, which is what you are trying to get me to do for you this whole time.  It would be nice if you could admit that you actually instigated this whole ordeal, instead of trying to run intereference with things I admitted to doing.  Not that I need it for closure or anything.  I just don't want you losing anymore sleep over this.

Tehcnically, what you're doing here is trying to say "I'm innocent." and then try to put the focus on what I did wrong.  That's fine.  I actually did it for you by admitting it before you got the chance.  You can't even say you're sorry?  This is called the blame game - you got caught with your pants down, and instead of just admitting you were wrong, you try and blame someone else for your own wrong-doing.  I didn't start being a jerk toward anyone until about three of my posts in.... and even then, it wasn't blantantly obvious until five posts in.  You started in on your first one.

If anything, you are the troll here.  I simply just changed my tone to accustom your manner of dialect a little better.

Anything else?

I know it wasn't, but that doesn't negate the disgusting nature of it. Or the rudeness. And I promise not to harrass you, myself.

I apologize if I was overly sensative. I like civil.

Now I would argue, that to not care about other's opinions would make them not care about yours. And that would lead to no one engaging you in witty banter and intelligent dialogue. That would be a shame.:)

I don't completely disregard others' opinions... I mean... when they agree with me, then I do respect it.  Or, if they actually have some argument that matters.  Ninjas flying out of the sky is.... just.... I mean I CAN actually understand some logic in that - they're just on the roof waiting to ambush you.  See?  It makes sense to me.  Is there a better way to handle it that isn't so B-move-ish?  I'm sure there is, but that's just one example of something that really should not matter, and people blow it way out of proportion.

Now, if someone actually had the mindset to say, "I don't like it, because it breaks character for the theme of the game by making it a little too 'light-hearted' and slap-stick."  Well... okay.  I can respect that.  That is a good argument.  It's a shame that I actually had to be the one to say it, though.  So far, since I have entered this thread, I have done more for my opposition's argument than they have, because of that one sentence.  That was a freebie...

Nonetheless, when I ask you why you don't like something and your response is, "Because I don't like it...." then I have to assume that you don't really know why you don't like it, except that everyone else doesn't like it, and you can't think for yourself.  Do you see where I am going here?  You can't say, "I don't like it because I don't like it."  That is not an answer - it's just dumb.  Here is a list of actual responses to this question.

Why don't you like this?

"Because it's my opinion and you should respect it."

That's not answering my question.  Why don't you like this?

"Because I don't like it!  I have a right to not like it!"

I know you do.  And I understand that you don't like it.  My question is why?

"It's won all these awards.  That's why I like it!"

You like it because it won awards, which means you like it because someone else liked it?

"Go away troll!"

None of that makes any sense.

How'd I do.

It's better than anything anyone else has said.  However - I want it known that I was the one that actually pointed the absurdity of it out.

And... really... if you think about it... they don't always fall from the sky.  They do actually spawn in other rooms where you don't see them (every RPG does this), or they come from around the corner where you don't see them (every RPG also does this).  So, again... it's possible that this is maybe still just blown out of proportion.  People have a knack for seeing things that stick out, but don't really pay attention to the things that don't stick out.  So, yes - it's absurd sometimes how things fall from the sky.  But that's really not a definitive factor that makes DAO a better game.

Now, how about Warriors not being able to use bows?

Now, I'm not going to "give" you guys this one.  But I will ask a question - partly to make a point, but partly because I'm not really sure what the answer is and maybe someone else does.

Can't Warriors actually use bows?  I mean, sure, they have no skills or abilities - but technically, the only thing preventing them from doing so is their Dexterity.  So, if you boost that (which I like to for a 2H Spec anyway, for the Crits applied to the AoE nature of the weapon) then you should be able to equip them and use them with Atuto-Attack - correct?  I mean, bows don't actually come with class Restrictions unless it's maybe a special name weapon?

Again, that's just a question - I'm not sure what the answer is.

In my opinion DAO is better than DA2, there are things that I like about DA2.

I liked the story of da2 with the addition of a voice for the lead character, I do not see this as essential though. I really didn't like some aspects of the combat, bosses running off to hide while more minnions get swarmed towards you, surely they would all just attack from the beginning and kill you then and there. I'm not adverse to reinforcements arriving on the scene but in every battle it was just cheap and annoying.

I preferred the way dao let me manage my followers, the spell and skill progression was dumbed down in da2 and I feel is better suited to the Mass Effect universe. The camera control in dao was much better, I preferred the freedom it gave me when managing my party in combat. I also like the fact that a toolkit was released for the community to add content to dao.

DA2 isn't a bad game, however since finishing it I've not gone back to play it, I have however started a new character in dao. I also don't feel as inclined to purchase DLC with da2, that could just be because what has been released so far just doesn't appear to add much to the overall experience.

hmm, I can't answer the bows question. Don't know the answer.

Of course there were moments in DAO where you could clear a room turn and leave and more would come from the door. But it was  paratrooping group of soldiers literally leaping from a three story building onto stone. And I wasn't  ganked every few feet by a group of enemies. I mean really, it got a little much just trying to walk in Kirkwall. And when you get (depending on your level--easy, normal, hard, nightmare) ganked by multiple waves of  maybe 10 or more people, then walk thirty feet and do it gain, it makes me wonder if these gangs are actually more of the population of Kirkwall than the law abiding citizens. What is this, Mad Max beyond Thunderdome?

And there are what four, five  gangs you get to do quests to take out their leaders? Their numbers must have been huge.. In killing them, I must have depopulated Kirkwall by half.

Does this make DAO better? In my opinion, yes. A couple of darkspawn appear in a room I cleared versus a group of people falling from the roof in full armor? The amount and frequency of the waves? Were DAO's unrealistic? Sometimes, but not all the time like DA2's.

While this lady whom no one outside of the "core fans" knows well enough to care about her winning awards, will never receive a tenth of Jenkins' accolades:

Yet she sings this to PERFECTION. (Technically. And her interpretation also dwarfs Jenkins' juvenile "acting").

All there is to awards, only that the gaming industry is even more shallow than the classical music biz these days.;)

Opera just wow...the fat lady has sung..take a nap already.

Drama Queen Strikes again.

I prefer Origins over DA2 for a variety of reasons. However I believe that most of DA2's flaws are due to the same Bioware mindset / design philosophy that they had for Origins and other games.

It more or less working for me in DA:O and not in DA2 is a combination of quality and decreasing marginal utility.
