Which is better: Dragon Age: Origins or Dragon Age 2?

2 is worse on practically every front. Art Direction (wtf elves? stupid looking darkspawn), Dumbed down boring combat. Dumbed down skill trees. Lack of party customization. Inferior writing. Inferior companion interaction. Extremely recycled environments. Etc. etc.

Additionally the combat speed was more realistic in Origins than 2 by a long, long way.
Origins combat animations were also much more refined in Origins.
The only thing DA2 had over Origins in the combat department was it got rid of the awkward shuffling your party would do in order to get to their target. That used to frustrate me to no end while playing Origins, especially in places like the Deeproads.
Aye that's true, you'd see the whole range of motion whereas in DA2 you saw the start and the end of the move, seemingly going so fast that there was no inbetween

i love bombast and cinematics, so we're not going to reach consensus there, but i have a lot more to say about the qunari in da2 and unfortunately idt this is the place for it.KnightofPhoenix wrote...

ANYTIME
Good luck!
And just to make it clear. I enjoyed act 2 and the Qunari quite a bit. If there is anything about the game that could motivate me to play it again, it's them. But sadly, I think they are part of the reason why I think the overall central plot was not done well.

My own preference is Origins, but that does not mean that I think it better or worse than DA II; it only means that I, as an individual, prefer the style of Origins.

I sorta prefer the faster paced combat of Dragon Age 2, but do the decisions you made in Dragon Age: Origins really have a big/medium effect on the story of Dragon Age 2 (aside from Alistair's role in Dragon Age 2)?
Nope.
Not at all, it's practially useless, but then again i still have see BioWare really exploit it's potential.

to be fair, da2 takes place in the free marches and dao is in ferelden. you can't really expect too many of the warden's choices to have that big an impact on kirkwall.

That is one of the reasons DA2 fails on a fundamental level for me. It shouldn't be a separate game and be a sequel, which it is. So that is a huge negative.
And I still say that DA2 can never be as good as DAO for the sheer speed at which it was pushed out the door. There are a lot of things that DAO was able to accomplish because of the time and love it got that DA2 will never get (and all of which can be found on the constructive crit and review threads--ie. the devil is in the details).

If Bioware continues to crank out awesome DLC, then DA2 has a shot at being better. And if Hawke can be made more proactive in an expansion I'll be happy. And if they retcon Orsino's fate on pro-mage playthroughs and just say Varric embellished, then I'll happily call DA2 just a touch weaker than DAO, but great.
Oh yeah, and a gorilla companion will make it better that DAO for me.
And yes, in every post I shall mention my want of a gorilla companion. An actual gorilla companion, not just a Genlock or a Genlock Disciple (though that would be awesome).

I hope I am proven wrong, but I don't think DLC are going to help make this game better than DAO. Not if that ridiculous LoTR troll is any indication. Oh, sorry, Genlock. Because to me, it smacks of more of the same.
I suppose it shouldn't, but the retconned darkspawn really, really ****** me off on a level I don't even know how to describe. I hate them with a passion. I will be waiting for gamer reviews. So far, not impressed by the pics (seriously they should have done a sequel with the Architect, instead we get the "Conductor.").

Meh, liking the redesigns is subjective as you know. I don't find them to be troll-like aside from skin-tone. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I find it ironic though that I used the word beauty for Darkspawn, but hey whatever.
I don't see redesigns as much of a retcon. Some worked (Genlocks), others didn't (hurlocks and Ogres). Just something to make the series stand on its own (which was what people hated about DAO's LotR Darkspawn. I think it's unfair for some people to say they want LotR-like Hurlocks but take issue with Genlocks looking somewhat LotR-like, which as I've said before neither strike me as LotR-like). Unless you mean something other than the redesigns?

As a LoTR fan, I never saw DAO hurlocks as LoTR. They don't look like Uruk. They look as Gaider described them in his books. They are creepy and scary. The new ones just make me want to punch something. They don't scare me or creep me out, just make me frustrated. Yet, Golems stayed the same. Just another thing that got changed for no good reason.
And I am sick and tired of the series to "Stand on its own." Sorry but it is part of a series a story in a world already created for me. The art style didn't have to change. It was fine, just the way it was. If they wanted more color, fine, add more color, but the designs didn't have to get changed. It isn't a stand alone, it is a sequel.
At this point I would be happy to throw it out and pretend it was Varric stoned on LSD. Seriously, what was so wrong with DAO that the darkspawn had to change? Nothing. That was not one of DAO's flaws.
Again, I think my deepseated anger is due to the darkspawn just being one of those fixing what wasn't broken about DAO.
Did they change the art style from ME1 to ME2? I ask because I haven't played them yet. And I stress yet.

I too am a LotR fan. My Darkspawn thread actually showed proof that they didn't look anything like Orcs, Uruk, or anything else.
Golems didn't look like anything from some other fantasy genre to people I think. But we do agree that Hurlocks and Ogres got abducted by aliens and were replaced by some cloning experiment gone horribly wrong.

Shrieks, Hurlocks, and Ogres were perfect with their Origins designs. They were menacing, gruesome, horrifying, and just all around perfect.
The Gremlins.... I mean Genlocks.... from Origins however were in need of a redesign desperately. Had Bioware only changed the Genlocks people wouldn't be as upset with the redesigns. I agree that the idea a series needs to stand on its own in all regards isn't necessary. But I love the new Genlock design.
It may have something to do with my liking of gorillas. I've liked primates since I was a kid. I don't like the Chalkspawn moving like monkeys though. I don't know how I'd react to DAO Hurlocks moving like monkeys. I might like it, or I might laugh my ass off in a good way.

Darkspawn for the most part weren't broken and in need of fixing. As I said above, the Gremlins were in need of fixing in my (and many other peoples') opinions.
Also, no clue. Haven't played the ME series.

I like gorillas too, but I dont' need them in my DA. The yellow stupid, huge gorilla genlock is more obscene to me than what you call a gremlin (that grin of theirs was more creepy than the yellow blob I saw in the pics). It looks like a LoTR troll, I'll take the gremlin and the rest of the DAO darkspwan (really enough people ****ed after DAO came out about how the darkspawn looked? Really? Enough that BioWare went, "hmmm, yes lets change them into trolls, S&M rejects, and skeltor?).
Again, anger due to the stupid buggering 180 degree changes from a game that was great (despite it's flaws) to its sequel. They need to go back 180 degrees and do what they should have in the first place...fix what was flawed in DAO, tweak what was meh, and keep what worked.

Well, I want a gorilla companion. And I want to put him in silverite Chainmail
I actually thought the grin was one of the most laughable features about the Gremlins. They didn't even have a Chelsea Grin as the reason for it like the Hurlocks did. It was just.... evil grinning for the sake of appearing evil.
And I have no clue why the devs felt the need to change Hurlocks and Ogres into.... those things. I'll never be able to like them.
But Genlocks I love now. And hey maybe you will too if you get the DLC. You never know.
What's your opinion on the Hurlock Alpha design? It looks different than the Chalkspawn Skeletor Clowns

I agree. Do that with DAO and with DA2 and you'll have a solid game most likely.

Rest was just rubish:
Lack of RPG (talking with companions especially), recycled areas, elves looking like damn mutants, the way they ffffed up Ander's personality (awakening was so much better and less gayish) and last but not least the end FORCED choice; if you had exiled prince it sucked even more, because one way or another, you loose 1 companion.
For Bioware's sake, I hope the DA3 gets fixed.
