For story I'd pick DA2 over DA:O, however the reusage of areas in DA2 is really bothersome so in that department I'd pick DA:O over DA2. When it comes to combat I've got mixed feelings really. Both combat systems work for me even though they're miles apart, but I don't think I'd want to play Origins with a DA2 combat system and vice versa. I liked the fact that DA2 mostly plays out in Kirkwall, for me - the entire story could have been in Kirkwall. Reminds me about some old fantasy short stories I used to read when I was younger (Thieves' World I believe it was called), where the stories all took place in a town.

To summarize, I can't really decide which one is better. DA:O has some things I like better while DA2 has things I enjoyed far more than I did in DA:O. So yeah, it's an even tie I believe.

I agree with that you said here. I'll add one thing...I like the companion relationships in DA2 better. They have more depth, I think, and they feel very real. I don't mind going to different places to speak to my companions, you all live in a big city, it makes sense and its more realistic. The camp was great for DA:O, you were traveling through a complete country. To me a camp wouldn't work for DA2 as seperate dwellings wouldn't work for DA:O.

You'd think DA2 was the Antichrist with the way some people are talking about it...

I like both games but I never finished DA: O so I'll have to go back to that at some point.

I found DA:O dull and tedious, but it had an epic story and a diverse world
DA:2 is more fun, prettier, has THE best characthers (Merril and Varric <3), but it lacks an epic story and is incredibly easy (even on nightmare).

So I'm going to give it to DA:O, seeing how EA/Bioware screwed me over with hidden Securom and banning me from my DA:2 game, for a comment on the forum.

I'm sorry if I mention it again, but that debacle has left a rather bad taste.

DA:O, no comparison. DA 2 is a sad joke.

I agree. Complete waste of time. Personally don't like the fact that your unable to customize armor. Also whats up with all the gay toons in DA2? Makes me sick.

I encourage everyone to read my response. Sure, it's a little drawn out and long, but if you're looking for a non biased opinion with reasons on why I like Dragon Age 2, then you will find a lot of useful information here which may help you decide if you do or do not want to purchase Dragon Age 2. Also, I encourage people to state why they like or don't like Dragon Age 2, like I did. "It sucks", "It's horrible", "Waste of money", these do not tell the developers why you don't like the game. It's really a shame at what the Dragon Age community has dwindled down to. Intelligent responses are few and far in between here. All I have really gotten so far is "Wahhhh, mommy change my diaper...DA2 stinks!" No one is going to take you seriously when they see "It's horrible." Why is it horrible? You guys need to start elaborating on your opinions, like I did.
No one is right, no one is wrong, they're all opinions, but I'm truly
curious on specifically why people don't like the game other than kiddie
responses such as "DA2 is gay". If I wanted to hear responses like that, I'd just go read the World of Warcraft forums.

Now, on to my thoughts...

Personally I have found Dragon Age 2 immensely more fun and engaging than the original Dragon Age: Origins. I like character development a lot better. It actually makes sense now! No longer do I have to pick up useless spells I never used just to have that powerful AOE that came in handy for certain fights. What a waste of ability points that was.

The story is also better, more personal, deeper, and more dramatic. Rarely in the original Dragon Age was I sucked into the story. Did I enjoy the story? Sure. There were a few high points that had decent cutscenes and dialogue, but for the most part the entire story was predictable and just had a hard time keeping me interested. I often felt the story was just too generic in the original game. The story this time around has a lot more twists and turns, and has kept me on the edge of my seat, especially the deeper I get into the main plot, and the side quests aren't too shabby, either. In fact, some of the side quests have some of the best dialogue in the game.

Combat is more engaging, and the reworked abilities are leaps and bounds better than in the original game. As a rogue, I actually have a reason to use my abilities, instead of being filtered with useless abilities for the most part left you feeling that just autoattacking is just as effective as using all my abilities. It's fun to evade, leaving everyone stunned, then jumping right back in with a strike from above. It's also just as satisfying to obscure myself, stealth, then rip people apart before they even know what hit them. The reduced friendly fire on AOE's on normal mode also makes AOE's a little bit more worth using now. Rarely in the original game did I use my AOE's due to the immense amount of friendly fire your companions would take, even on normal. That's not to say I don't appreciate the deservedfriendly fire on Nightmare.

The change in the armor system is also a welcomed change. Now armor has a dual attribute requirement eliminating the dexterity or cunning cookie cutter builds that were possible in the original game. If you want to be able to wear the more powerful armors in the game later in the game, it's a necesity to level up both dexterity and cunning, exactly how it should be. Far as buff stacking, I haven't tried that yet, but it got a bit ridiculous in the original game where you could stack every buff in the game making your character invincible.

I could ramble on for hours about the changes in Dragon Age 2, what I like, and why I liked it, but to make it short, the entire experience just feels more cohesive and I welcome that change. If I were to recommend the game to anyone, I would tell them to go into it with an open mind because if you're expecting Dragon Age: Origins with a new story, then you're going to be disappointed. If you're looking for a new Dragon Age game that has horrible mechanics revised and redesigned and go into it thinking of it as a totally new experience and new game, then you will appreciate what BioWare has done to the franchise.

I prefer without any doubt DAO.

The RPG world on DAO is better, the inventory, the history, and a lot of more things. DA2 has only one thing better than DAO, the graphics on combat, no more.

See all

If you traveled to the center of the Milkyway Galaxy and back. That's how much better Origins is than DAII.

For the record, I played Origins mainly on my 360 and loved it. Finally "I thought"; when it released, I can play a CRPG on my 360. Then along comes DAII and ruins that dream.

I havent played DA2 aside from the demo.

Plot DA2becuase they had thier own agenda.
Companions, both, I liked them more in DAO, but they felt more alive in DA2
Artstyle DA2
Gameplay ...
Going with oigins here, I found the demo TOO fast, and some things were just terrible (taunt didnt work so the ogre boss was a nightmare) ane becuase it was faster leaving my rogue for 2 seconds and they wouldbe infront of the ogre. Also recycled content, lots of it.

DA2 had potential, but it was rushed so it failed.

After playing DA2's PC demo and sampling its 360 version with a friend, DA:O is light years ahead.

Why do you like Dragon Age over Dragon Age 2? You guys need to start elaborating. Put yourself in the developers shoes just for a moment. Let's say you release a game you've worked for 3-5 years on and finally it's released. You look at your forums and you see someone say "If you traveled to the center of the Milkyway Galaxy and back. That's how much better Origins is than DAII. " How would you feel? How do you determine what you need to do differently in the next installment of Dragon Age to get people to like it better? You guys really need to start giving intelligent reaponses and reasons why you don't or do like Dragon Age 2 so BioWare can make adjustments to the next installment in the franchise. And yes, BioWare does listen. They have eliminated almost everything in the original game that was horrible, but some things were just in the wrong direction, so tell them what they did wrong. They have a greater chance on making changes to please a wider range of their audience that way.

You know, talking to the developers goes a long way and has a lot to do with a game's success.

Well you're a vocal minority if I ever saw one. That or a troll. The graphics of Origins (PC) look a lot better than your version FYI :). And hey, while we're here, Crysis came out in 2008. What excuse does Bioware have to make a game with worse graphics than one that came out in 2008? Oh right, none.

I wonder how many people have actually PLAYED dragon age 2 or just sampled the demo... I'm a completely neutral party here so don't flame at me.
Considering I finished Dragon age 2 I can tell you the demo isn't representative of what the game is actually like.

I fail to belive that when they couldnt even fix auto attack.
And I wont risk £40 on it.

it's because DA2 differ from DAO and people expected continuity. they just want to climb back into their gray warden armors and get their teddy bears, i mean, old love interests. i think Bioware created something new and superb, but tell people to try be open minded and grasp new things, then prepare for tomatoes dropped into your face.
what i see they whine most about DeviantArt forums
1. i want back my Morrigan/Alaister/Zehehevraaaan etc.
2. what is this story with some nameless guy? i want to be a grey waaardeeen and save da world etc.
3. where is the old inventory, i want 1000 sets of armor to choose from, to dress my zevran into XX
4. recycled dungeons (here they right, but still they look much better than in DAO, especially the deep roads)
mind you, the real creative, talented people there like DA2, it's mostly the alaister/zevran team who's complaining.

Dragon Age Origins.

DA2 is like a yin and yang of itself. For every great aspect of the game, there is an equally horrendous aspect. It's almost as if they did it on purpose.

Actually, I haven't seen anything on 'I want to be a grey warden'.  Most of the complaints I've seen are based on some of the core development points:

The graphics in both games are pretty much the same, a slight improvement is barely noticable.  There have been games released in the past two years with far superior graphics.

I could go on, but I won't, just because people don't think DA2 is teh bestest, doesn't invalidate their opinions.

OH YEAH, a huge step up, those re-used textures, the re-used character voices on alot of the NPCs, the re-used locations.  As far as how to recycle a game goes, its a huge step up!

And the combat, phewww!!! that is such a blast, i love not being able to zoom out to set my AOE radials in a proper area, that is the BOMB BABY.

And the story is the most unique i've ever seen, it's like, it's not even there! which is SO cool!

And the side quests? are all really really wel done and unique, i enjoyed every single side quest it has offered me.

And the combat is amazing! how the enemies just appear is fantastic! im blasting a couple of guys then all of a sudden my mage is dead! 6 other enemies appear out of NOWHERE, the cunning and cleverness of them! So tricky!

lol. I agree with you though .
