Personally I think Carver prefers being a Warden. He seems kind of miserable as a Templar. He has to keep secret that his sister is a mage. He has to deal with the mages and learn Templar skills. His letter as a Templar is much more disheartening than his Warden letter. Although it is just as sarcastic Carver as it can be. I feel bad making him a Templar and having to put him in that position to choose in the end. I love the Grey Warden ending where he is by your side either way.
Also, the deeproads fight isn't so bad -- just get your party to MOVE THEIR ARSE when the AOE starts. Hide behind the rocks for Maker's sake. Anders, Carver, and Varric could handle the fight fine. If your Hawke has healing stuff that helps too. Also, stock up on potions and set tactics to tell your companions to USE them when health <25% or <50% whichever is your flavor. This helps a ton, but does eat your potions fast.
Carver Warden all the way, \\m/

I kind of like Carver in the Wardens more, but it might be more story-appropriate for my Hawke to leave him at home.

Carver's all "uhhh.... ummm..." So it is implied he kept your secret even if the game mechanics make it retarded whether they know or not. Some banter is like "MAGE!" this and "MAGE!" that, but then you throw in lines like this and it is all "wait, what?"

I get the impression that the big KC litterally doesn't know that Hawke's a mage till she shows up on the scene and is all ".... oh look, she casted a fireball. THAT EXPLAINS SO MUCH" ;p
and then she's like "You're in trouble for not telling us your sister/brother's an appostate, CARVER HAWKE" *dun dun dun* should carver be a Templar.
On that note, I also like Carver as a warden better, at least in my Fem!Hawke playthroughs. He's.. more.. awesome and less bitter. Except in Rik Hawke's case, then its never more awesome then to have your snarky little brother in the city to watch you become awesome while he is forced to be a Templar. A lowly one at that.

When Meredith shows up in my mage playthroughs i always picture it more like:
Meredith: You're Ser Carver's sister/brother... I wonder why he's neve mentioned you...
*Runs off to find templars, finds carver, brings forth leather belt of doom*
Meredith: So, Ser Carver. I think you have been a bad boy.
*Later*
Meredith: Orsino, you live?
*Carver padding his behind mumbling in dismay*
Or perhas my perverted mind just takes it too far..
The one point i really like Carver as a templar was when he defended my f!Hawke in front of Meredith.
Carver: I won't kill my sister for yew! (I bet he finally snapped after six years of spanking)
If i wasn't straight i might've fallen in love with him there
In all other situations i prefer him as a warden.

Carver can whine with the best of them, but he is right about one thing: he lives in the shadow of his older sibling. Joining the wardens gets him out from under his sibling's shadow and into a place where he can do something that matters and excel at it.

Now what should i use for that...? "My Sandal enchanting Dog's behind," perhaps?
... No, would cause more damage..
*Calls Dr. Solus for solution*
