Alright, so because of the fact I have the Black Emporium and can reset my attributes + abilities when ever I want, I tried out all of the trees that deal with damage. Unfortunately, I am only level 9 so I'm unable to go far into the specialization trees, but out of the other trees I found Primal to be the best. I used to run elemental with a few points in arcane and I was only doing about 120 damage as my max ( and this was with the ice spells ). As primal I was hitting as high as 400 with Vital Fury. I found Chain Lightning to be the most devastating of spell of all though, it deals 220 damage to up to 7 enemies ( with the upgrade )! That's 1540 damage with a single spell. I love this tree and I plan on sticking with it.
Is that because you are saving lightning for staggered enemies? If so the upgraded frost spells may not do as much direct damage, but the debuff allows your companions to destroy anything brittle.

I agree with Sterlin22 in that the primal tree is just nasty, petrify is great on those pesky stealth assassins. Also helps that none of the spells affect your party on nightmare.
best advice I have though:
Take Force Mage spec if only for the skill that gives you +100 fortitude. You will be able to stay on your feet as well as any warrior.

Best mage build is the one with the big 2h swords in it. gives you innate AOE on all autoattacks. lets you upgrade all spells to be AOE and all your spells knock back or knock down the enemy in an AOE giving you immense crowd control. it also makes your gear require the best stats in the game. srength and constitution.
What builld/class lets a mage use 2h swords???

The mage spec, were not all that impressive. Force is good for a little bit of cc, but doesn't really do much damage. Blood Mage was okay, but it really is only used for making your health your mana, and being able to heal yourself with the dead or party members. Spirit Healer is probably the best tree for a mage, but you are restricted to be a healer, due to the sustained. So for me I only invested 2 points into my specs(which was Force, so I could get 100 fort), and did primal, spirit, and entorpy . It was a fun build. Primal for damage, spirit for damage and mana regain, and entorpy for cc.
For the most part I agree with everything you said, however, I think you short change the Blood Mage spec a little. While it is true that the main appeal of BM is to use your health as mana, that is no trivial ability, especially once you start stacking items that improve your health to mana ratio, Blood Mages can effectivly cast indefinatly. Not to mention Hemorrhage, a FF friendly 10m AOE that gets an even greater damage bonus against staggered enemies than chain lightning.

For my first spec i went with Force mage. The spells aren't too great in it, but the 125% Physical/Elemental force bonus and Unshakable make it well worth it.

Pull of Abyss from the Force Mage line is great for using it with a fully upgraded Walking Bomb.
I have no idea why anyone would suggest spirit healer. :/

Primal is very nice. My second choice would be Elemental. I don't see a point in getting spells from Entropy or Spirit trees =
Entropy has a nice one point wonder spell for bosses. Otherwise, Primal is hands down the best tree in the game, for any difficulty, but especially Nightmare. Not because of Petrify either, but because of how much damage Chain Lightning can do, and Tempest has the nice bonus of stunning enemies while it kills them.

When leveling up as a mage, how much should you invest in constitution ?
I'm playing on Nightmare using Hawke and Anders for Mages and neither have a single point in CUN or CON. If you were playing a Blood Mage, that's entirely different.

Personally, I'd probably try to keep both CON and MAG the same. You don't really need to worry about WIL until ACT 3, if the final unique armor interests you, and then you have to decide if going with lower CON is worth the bonuses (it typically would be...). So ultimately it would just be 2/1 and 1/2 every other level. After you get another item that helps the health to mana conversion (if they even stack with the skill that does the same), I'd probably just keep doing 2 MAG per level.
