1) When you import your DAO character (dead or alive doesn't matter), some choices you made are taken into account for Awakening.

2) When you do not import anything, but start from scratch with a new Warden Awakening assumes some "default plot".

Concerning "1", I really would like to ask what choices carry over. Could someone elaborate there? I finished Awakening with my imported DAO Warden. But all I noticed in terms of applied choices was:
  • I got a stupid "Sorry no time to help you, but good luck" letter from Leliana (whom I romanced). Stating that she is soooo busy visiting the Pope/Divine and that she can't help me in Awakening.
  • King Alistair dropped by once during the first 45minutes of the game, as if to show that yes he's alive. He does a bit of small talk, but then he walks away and is never seen again and irrelevant for the rest of the plot.
  • The two Dwarven NPCs in my Vigils Keep were sent by King Harrowmont, not a "King Bhelen". But that's just one word in one line of dialogue.
But that was it. Not to mention the game brazenly disregarded several other choices I had made. For example that I had made the Circle independent from the Chantry. No trace of that. Or, for example you also briefly encounter Wynne, but she basically treats you like a total stranger (+100aproval backin DAO) .

You don't visit any locations of DAO, either... so... was there much else?

(Apart from people trusting you more if you are "the" Warden)

@digi_ronin Thanks : ) that was starting to get confusing there.

I just started play DA not to long ago for the reason that BW made KOTOR and ME. But from what im reading here DA is a great game but BW really dropped the ball when making a story come together that makes sense as far as imports go. And even though I have not played DA2 , I hear it really has nothing to do with DA.Kinda reminds me of the highlander franchise, cool to watch but you just can't help being like... HUH?

It make sense if ur warden survive the battle agains the archdemon, some decisions and mentions will work properly, if u died that's not really a matter.

As for Import in DA2, it only matters on the circunstances of how some cameos appear in the game. just that...

Hmm..I had more interaction with Alistair but probably because of being in a romance with him, but you are correct he's interaction is sadly limited to only being there long enough to go: Love to help but the bannorn are acting like little bit@hes.

My conov with Wynne she called me her dear friend a couple of times. Maybe your dialog choices? I dunno there.

And as for the autonomy of the Circle; In my playthrough it says that Alistair declared the Circle free  and the chantry overulled him. I picture that as him trying to do something and the Grand cleric slapping him down.
