I really hated this guy at first. He screwed over Hawke's family so that he could fulfill a gambling habit.

By the third act, I was deeply moved by his attempt to express affection for Hawke, calling him/her the last bit of family he has left. It was really touching and broke down the harsh facade he maintained during the first two acts. He demonstrated that was no mere caricature of a bumbling uncle, but a true human being who is sorry for the wrongs he has committed. He was clearly an embittered, lonely, old man, and with no one else left to talk to, expresses this to Hawke.

In many ways, Uncle Gamlen reminds me of my father.

He could have been fleshed out a bit more, but that last interaction with him was really moving. Even if it was small.

I liked when (spoiler) he blamed me, since I was a Mage, for my mothers death. That was nice of him.

At first, I wouldn't have even been polite enough towards him to dance on his grave. When Leandra was taken, he showed genuine concern an even cried over her death. I have a newfound respect for Gamlen, and he now has a place in my top 5 characters.

EDIT: Whoops, I hate typos.

I really fail to see how he screwed over Hawke's family. Feels more like the other way around, the girl who runs aways actually inherit the state while the guy who stayed behind and took care of his family until their last breath does not even get a thank you from the pompous girl on her return.

Not to mention, if it weren't for the blight, Hawke's family would never have returned. Hawke having to work to pay off the debt and what's not, is the least he/she could have done to earn his/her place in Kirkwall, not to mention, at least he/she was lucky enough to have a job when the rest of the Fereldans were being treated like unwanted trash.

I wasn't fond of Gamlen at first. I was adamant about supporting my mother and siblings. However after Leandra died and he admitted to me being the only family he had, I melted. On his personal quest, I kept saying out loud to myself "Please don't let Uncle Gamlen die as well! He's all that's left!"

The one thing surrounding Gamlen that I ended up hating was how we didn't have the option to invite him back to the family estate in the end.

As much as I love Dragon Age II, I have a problem with overkill (like how secondary characters can't seem to survive in Doctor Who). Unlike with Origins, I did feel like it was just about impossible to actually save or spare someone. Sparing someone just put off death for a little bit. Perhaps there are more moments where people do live, but the moments of losing people are just too memorable. Even Huon's wife sticks out to me. I would have liked more opportunities to save people.

Needless to say, my point is that I was thrilled to find a living cousin. It was one of the few moments where I actually felt like I wasn't losing someone or something--which was pretty much a constant feeling while playing the game.

What? Where is this girl? I just finished the game and no one ever mention any lost child.

He blames you no matter what. I was a rogue and he was all like, "You should have gotten there sooner!" As if I hadn't been trying to get my ass there as quickly as possible already. <_<

I was always hoping I'd get a chance to punch him or stab him or something. Act I never presented the opportunity, though :(

It might be buggy.  I read the note and got a quest to visit Darktown as a result, but was never able to find anything there.

I kind of hopped that Gamlen would get fleshed out a bit more. After Leandra died I sort of wished he would have moved in with me. Poor guy, he was the last of Hawkes family practically.

I mean when the game started I kind of hated Gamlen and his greed, but it became clear later on that he did have a heart. And for all his jealousy he loved his sister and family.

I loved Gamlen! I started out going OMG THIS SCUMBAG, but by the end I really fell for him. His reaction to Leandra's kidnapping and death made me so sad, and omg, reuinting him with his daughter, who's just as crooked as he is.

I appreciate his postion as the slightly dirty old man type. He hangs around the Blooming Rose and offers not to tell Hawke's mom if s/he doesn't. He even makes crude comments about Hawke "slipping it" to Isabella. Early on he might be a d-bag but he's a sort of loveable lawlworthy one and his heart to heart concern later on is also endearing, I guess.

I liked Gamlen, he was a believable character. Shame he didn't play a bigger role. Maybe he will be in back in DA3.

I liked him myself, he was as has been said "believable".

I also like the fact he progresses from
1) A lying thieving scum bag
to
2) a petty grieving man who blames you for your mothers own death
to
3) a guy who's not half bad and lets you know that he actually gives a damn about you and is even kinda proud of ya.

Nice guy with a crappy life and suffering from some stupid choices.

There's some real pathos in the scene where you discuss Leandra's death. Just don't tell him it was a mage. I felt for the poor guy.

Thumbs up for Gamlen. Very well-written character.
As most players, I went from GOD DAMNIT THIS ****ING SCUMBAG to "Hey, looks like the poor sod had a believable Freudian excuse after all" to "Unca Gamlen, I want to hold you close and never let you go. You're all that's left of my family."

Am I the only one who melted inside when he read "Gamlen's greatest treasure has been found" in Hawke's journal? SO MOVING.

QFT.

I like to think of him as a realistic asset to the timeline. His development made it easier to feel the years fly by.

I liked the surprise of having a cousin (Gamlen's daughter) and the fact he regrets losing her mother with his obsession over that gem, was nice to give him some more family before Hawke goes on the run.

He was an ****, a thief, the kind of person who hangs out with and gambles with slavers...but after a certain point, he's the only family Hawke has. I wish I was able to invite him up to the mansion after Leandra died.
