Uncle Gamlen appreciation thread.

By the third act, I was deeply moved by his attempt to express affection for Hawke, calling him/her the last bit of family he has left. It was really touching and broke down the harsh facade he maintained during the first two acts. He demonstrated that was no mere caricature of a bumbling uncle, but a true human being who is sorry for the wrongs he has committed. He was clearly an embittered, lonely, old man, and with no one else left to talk to, expresses this to Hawke.
In many ways, Uncle Gamlen reminds me of my father.
He could have been fleshed out a bit more, but that last interaction with him was really moving. Even if it was small.

Not to mention, if it weren't for the blight, Hawke's family would never have returned. Hawke having to work to pay off the debt and what's not, is the least he/she could have done to earn his/her place in Kirkwall, not to mention, at least he/she was lucky enough to have a job when the rest of the Fereldans were being treated like unwanted trash.

The one thing surrounding Gamlen that I ended up hating was how we didn't have the option to invite him back to the family estate in the end.

Needless to say, my point is that I was thrilled to find a living cousin. It was one of the few moments where I actually felt like I wasn't losing someone or something--which was pretty much a constant feeling while playing the game.

Well atleast Hawke gave him a Happy ending by finding his long lost daughter so i guess now Hawke has a cousin
What? Where is this girl? I just finished the game and no one ever mention any lost child.

I liked when (spoiler) he blamed me, since I was a Mage, for my mothers death. That was nice of him.
He blames you no matter what. I was a rogue and he was all like, "You should have gotten there sooner!" As if I hadn't been trying to get my ass there as quickly as possible already. <_<

When u get the quest to visit him in Act 3 i think theres a Note on his table read it to get quest to find his daughter.

It might be buggy. I read the note and got a quest to visit Darktown as a result, but was never able to find anything there.

I mean when the game started I kind of hated Gamlen and his greed, but it became clear later on that he did have a heart. And for all his jealousy he loved his sister and family.

I also like the fact he progresses from
1) A lying thieving scum bag
to
2) a petty grieving man who blames you for your mothers own death
to
3) a guy who's not half bad and lets you know that he actually gives a damn about you and is even kinda proud of ya.
Nice guy with a crappy life and suffering from some stupid choices.

As most players, I went from GOD DAMNIT THIS ****ING SCUMBAG to "Hey, looks like the poor sod had a believable Freudian excuse after all" to "Unca Gamlen, I want to hold you close and never let you go. You're all that's left of my family."
Am I the only one who melted inside when he read "Gamlen's greatest treasure has been found" in Hawke's journal? SO MOVING.

QFT.
I like to think of him as a realistic asset to the timeline. His development made it easier to feel the years fly by.

I liked the surprise of having a cousin (Gamlen's daughter) and the fact he regrets losing her mother with his obsession over that gem, was nice to give him some more family before Hawke goes on the run.
