As stated, I am playing on only hard difficulty (really dont want to turn down the difficulty) with my archer rogue.  The party is Varric (no choice), Bethany, and Aveline.  It seems utterly impossible to kill this boss.  The damage we are doing to him is so low it isn't funny.  My rogue typically one shots weaker mobs, 2-5 shots on the tankier ones.  Even when the rock wraith drops all the rocks that surround him and the adds spawn, the group seems to be doing very little damage.  Eventually, everyone just dies because can't keep up healing (yes hiding behind pillar during the AoE move and taking no damage).

I'll be honest.  I really dont have any moves that exploit cross class combos.  Everything up till now hasn't really been hard.  All of a sudden it seems like my whole group sucks.  Are combos a huge difference maker?

How I've distributed stats to this point:
Hawke  2:1  1:2  dex/cun
Varric:   2:1  1:2  dex/cun
Bethany: 2:1  1:2  mag/will
Aveline: 2:1  1:2  str/con

All my characters have the best gear (including some DLC items) I could possibly get having done absolutely every single side/secondary quest.  All of the characters are level 11.

Aveline is built to have pretty much all tank skills.  She doesnt take much damage at all.

Bethany has pretty much everything in creation except repulsion, and then has a few things in arcane.

Varric and Hawke are mainly skilled for damage abilities, but Varric does have more CC than damage.

Can I even do this?  Should I re-load to before the Deep Roads, and respec my characters differently?

Ha ha...I'm playing on normal difficulty and looks like I'm stuck too, too low on potions and when he is nearly dead it ends killing all my mates...
Might be a good idea to disable your friends auto movement and hide them behind the columns from time to time.
Looks like we definetely need to build a strategy to take him down..
Good luck

This was a really hard fight for me on hard difficulty, had to lower to normal to get it done, which I still am bothered by. Anyway, make sure you make it so your guys don't kill themselves running on their own into the AoE the rock does.

I'd try to bring along some DPS mage also, healing really is not good enough in this game to pursue it at all. Some healing is alright but its embarrassing that health pots are my preferred method of healing. Anders is the only subpar healer, and subpar healing is still better than the atrocious healing from the basic heal spell. I'd give the mage maybe a point in the basic heal, but a whole mage devoted to Creation is really missing out on the hax Fiery and Icy damage tree which basically is the most overpowered part of the whole game.

Also, I'd recommend doing an AoE on those mini stone guys when the big stone guy is on the floor in the middle and the others surround him. I kept my tank on him while he was on the floor to try and build more threat while my dps guys attacked the smaller rocks to eliminate them. When he starts rolling around, then that was pretty much where I died. That and the burst thing he does that always killed us.

I haven't really had problems with my group taking any AoE damage or killing the rock guys he spawns. The problem is the fact that my group went from good to terrible in one fight. Very little damage done even when his shield is off. The group dies once Aveline dies which is after about 5+ minutes. It seems impossible to do with my group.

This is one of two fights I've had to lower the difficulty for, both of them bosses.

The other is much later in the game, and I could have done it on Hard via kiting, but it would have taken an hour (literally). The Rock Wraith was just literally so brutally unfair that I couldn't do it on Hard.

As long as he's in the melee phase (where he rolls around), it's possible to take zero damage with careful micromanagement. You can dodge his punches by kiting him and get out of the way of him rolling pretty easily. Aside from that just spread out and burn him with ranged DPS as steadily as possible.

The trouble is the phase where he throws arcane bolts at your party (this is the phase he starts in). I couldn't survive this, so I had to tone down the difficulty. :\\

Well, someone has to have been able to beat it on hard at the very least without exploiting the AI etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by "exploiting AI"... I beat him on hard in my 2nd attempt. My party was 2h warrior Hawke, Aveline, Varric, and Anders. Hawke was even a gimped berserker at the time.

The way I did it was keeping my party on "hold" for almost the entire time (when he spawns adds I sometimes toggled it off). Watch closely for the tells before his different attacks and move your tank away before they hit. I was hitting pause constantly and repositioning my party individually in anticipation for his attacks.

As for the "arcane bolt phase" Stalky24 mentioned, when he does that run your tank into melee and make sure he/she has aggro. It seems like more of an anti-kiting mechanic than a phase. Hope this helps, it was very satisfying beating him on hard. I wonder what nightmare's like :)

Always put Con in my builds so I did last through the bolts but once the pots ran dry, the party would die, even on "NORMAL"! I absolutely hate to lower the difficulty beyond that so I re-rolled thinking I had built something wrong but it seems all are stuck on this fight...

How long did the fight take you, and what was Anders setup? Also, how did you allocate your attributes on your characters if you don't mind me asking?

I'm surprised that I actually beat this guy on hard, but it took almost 30-45 minutes! It's HP was going down so slow. I had to move my guys around a lot and slowly chip down his HP bit by bit. It was painful =(

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "kiting"?

Kiting is when an enemy is attacking you, and you basically run away from them using abilities to slow them/damage them without taking any damage.  Kiting in my opinion is extremely boring.  It's all about chipping away at an enemy until it dies while you run around like a little girl.

@Stetzer13
The fight was really long, basically chipping away doing almost no visible damage. I can't say how long it actually took in minutes but I was exhausted by the time the bastard died.

Anders was setup as a hybrid healing/offense mage. I took points in healing, aid allies, mind blast, as well as the lightning abilities in the primal tree. I think thats about all he had at that level. Keep in mind I hadn't researched any optimal builds or anything at that point.

Party attribute distribution was pretty vanilla, str/con for warriors, dex/cun for varric, magic/will for Anders. Might have throw a couple points in con for Anders.

About kiting, it doesn't necessarily mean running around like a ******. One thing I really enjoy about DA2 is closing attacks. Using them to their full potential is probably key for nightmare. You can run back for a second to dodge an attack and charge right back into him. Doesn't feel lame at all.

There are, however, situations where running away is critical to survive, like when your tank has low health, and all healing and defensive abilities are on cooldown. As long as you dont over do it I think it's still fun gameplay.

Oh, I also used poisons (the slowing and damage reducing kids) and a crapton of potions. I doubt the poisons worked on the boss but they probably did on the adds. I always carry alot of consumables around since that fight.

I did it on hard with 2h hawke isabela varric and anders, (no s/s tank) took over an hour due to having to pause and micro manage everything. isabela was the weak point.

Tried on hard with Warrior (Shield) Hawke, Bethany, Aveline and Varric. Only managed to get the Rock-Wraith's health to 40%. Varric is the weak point here. I'm pretty sure I can beat the RW if I can substitute Varric for Anders.

Most of the time I allowed my companions to auto level-up for rpg purposes.

Imho, the hard difficulty is too uneven!

Tried a handful of times on hard to take him down, had to disable all of my party's tactics, put them all on hold to stop my ranged from charging right in front of him and just get rocked. each ended up with him about 1/4 of the way down. Eventually i just swallowed my pride and knocked it down to normal and managed to one shot him.

Hawke - Tank

Verric - Ranged DPS (obviously)

Merrill - Almost all points in primal, besides the 1 in entropy for Hex of Torment. Having Hawke stagger him then Merrill following up with a 600% chain lightning after the Hex of Torment was key for me. VERY small window to get the chain lightning in however.

Isabela - All points in sabotage, wasn't really much of a help at all, at around 25% i just had her stand in a corner so she wouldn't die :3

It's also worth pointing out if you put all your ranged behind your tank, given he has enough fortitude, when he targets someone and rolls at them if you take control of your tank and have him stop attacking and just stand there, the boss won't move at all.

Good luck all!

This was the only fight I dropped from hard to normal on - was low on pots and didnt feel like micro-managing the fight for 45 mins - 1 hr just to beat it. Its amazing how easy normal is though.

Tried it three times on hard, failed brutally every time.

Switched to normal and killed the rock wraith without much trouble. The difference between normal and hard modes in this encounter is IMO ridiculous.

It definitely is a hard fight and takes forever, but I was able to beat it my first try. My party was Fenris, Anders, Merrill, and Archer rogue. Stick everyone on hold, you do not want them running around on their own.

I think there were a few keys as to why I won this fight. First, Fenris was specced into the regen party stamina talent and the personal stam span talent. I think that was key since I would have run out of mana/stam if he didnt. Anders was specced into healer mode, which was real key.

As for the rest, it was just a process of hiding behind the pillars, running away from his rolly ball thingy, and burning down the adds when they come out (go range!). Everything else wasnt too difficult.

There is actually a required trash mob fight near the end of the game with a pride demon, a bunch of shades, and a blood mage, that I think was much much harder.  I think that was the hardest required fight of the game for me.  I died so many times it wasnt even funny

I beat it on hard mode. I used Hawke as a tank with a sword and shield, Merril, Verric, and Anders. I used Anders for healing and only healing,
When the time came to beat down the wraith I had hawke and anders hit him while merril and verric did AoE and killed the adds then join in with killing the wraith. Also having all 3 ranged heroes at 3 different corners or areas really helps. Hawke can just run in and tank the damage and keep attacking cause he's beast and you have 2 heals from anders. Also getting behind the pillars during his AoE attack and taking that time to heal is good.
