Beat it on hard mode minute ago.
Hawke is dual weapon rogue, Aveline as a tank, Anders as heal/support and Varric as Varric. And I must to accent that my setup and abilities were pretty dumb: Anders without heal aura and ally shield, Hawke without evasion tools and Aveline without Elemental Aegis. I want to say this fight is NOT setup dependent, just your brains and accurate positioning.
This is not necessary a range fight, but it is very important aggro control. Your tank must be always sit on the wraith and always damage it to hold aggro as long as (s)he can, except AOE phase and last wave of adds when your tank can help to destroy them quickly and switch to the boss again.
Dwarf and mage always staying near any column in line of sight of tank (to heal tank in case of low health and to avoid AOE damage at all), while my rogue was on his patrol to the boss and back to walls.
I used Mind Blast by Anders few times to guaranteed aggro drop, all damaging abilities of Varric (not like Pin Shot or Volley, but like Triplet and Bursting arrow) and my lovely upgraded Twin Fangs by Hawke, of course — each hit by Fangs does very significant damage to rock-a-fellow.
On spawn phase Varric and Anders shoots all adds, Hawke and tank helping if it is really needed and then back to boss. I used 4 pots out of 8 during this fight and Heal twice my tank by Anders.
Really, it is very interesting and challenging fight for me, like in endgame MMORPG dungeon. Thank you, Bioware!

This fight was tougher for me than the high dragon was, but they were pretty similar in strat,
My entire party died (hawkee shield war, merill nuking spec, anders healing spec, and varriv) aside from myself and anders. Anders rezzed my party and I just said screw hawkee this isn't happening.
I switched to merril, watched anders and hawkee die around 40% and range fought the rest of the way. Only took me one attempt, but this was on normal. Will be fun replying on hard, though I'll have greater range dps for that play through, and those two fights (wraith and high dragon) are pure range fights.

Just did this on nitemare with the following setup (this is my first playthru):
Hawke - 2H DPS warrior 1:1 Str/Con
Varric - Range DPS 1:1 Dex/Cun
Anders - DPS/Backupheal 1:1 Magic/Wiz
Merril - Spirit/Entropy DPS 2:1 Magic/Wiz
Had some trouble the first time learning the mechanism, the second time I died due to me paying bad attention to my positioning. Whats most important is that know where the dmg comes from and just avoid it. It is also important to remember here is that this boss in no way need to be tanked. Once you realize that he is fairly easy. I'll try to list what I learned:
* The first phase just burn him down, keep squishy cloth users out of his melee cleave and force him into the next phase. I managed to get him into the middle with only 1 teleport.
* When he stands in the middle and explodes, spread out and hide behind pillars during that phase. Try not to hide all the chars behind the same pillar, if you spread out the party over the room you will be able to kill off the adds faster and get more time for the next phase. Then fast as hell burn down the adds when they spawn.
* When the adds are down, pop haste and blow all DPS cooldowns on him until he is mobile again.
Remember to keep max range on him ALL the time until he have decided what char is he is gonna roll/walk for. Just use that characther to kite him. Stand still on max distance until you see the animation that he starts to morph into a ball. When you see that animation, run as far as you can from your current position while the rest of the party just burns him down. It is perfectly safe for melee chars to DPS him from behind/side when he is rolling. For a Warrior/Rogue this makes sense since you just run around and wait for all your CD's when he is targeting you, and when some range finally manage to aggro you run in and blow up all CD's you have. Ppl keep stating that this is a range fite and I only give them partly right. Clever played melee-chars will be able to deal ALOT of dmg here as well. Make sure not to have ppl in melee range when he stops rolling tho. This is NOT true for the last 50% or so when he starts doing that "pull everything to him" move. Then its pretty harmless for a melee to just charge in and go balls-to-the-walls with his or her dps on him. The dmg you take is neglectable.
Then the fite just turns to a rince repeat pattern, avoid his rolling, kite with the current threat holder while the rest DPS. Hide behind pillars, burn down adds.
Note: I have only played on nitemare and have no idea how you do it on other diffuculties.
I guess you can pretty much cheese alot of the moving in less diffuculties.

Killed this guy a few hours ago on hard. Group was Hawke as Force mage with a normal heal, Anders as fully specced healer, Aveline as tanker and Varric as Varric.
After the first time he teleports to the middle and hurls crystals or something at us he just flattened Aveline. I decided to try to kill him anyway and succeeded after a really long battle.
The whole fight was microing the one who had agro, while the other two slowly ate his health down.
I didnt use potions unless i really needed to, I mostly avoided the damage, so i managed with heals.
Halfway through I ordered the party to only move when i tell them to, saved a lot of heals, pots and tears with it.
When he summoned the small rockdudes I ordered my party to single target them down.
At around 20% I made the mistake of putting the whole party behind the same pillar while the Wraith was doing his pull thing. After he was done he teleported to us and murdered Hawke and Varric, twice since I immediately tried to ress them. The dps stopped nearly entirely for two minutes since I didnt want to send Aveline to her death again, so I made her stand in the corner out of the way while Anders kited Wraith.
When I managed to ress the others again I continued with the kiting and killed him.
So in summary, order the party to hold their position, dont bring ANY melee (its just easier that way, have the tank stand in the corner or something) and give Anders or Hawke resurrection in case of screw ups.
I was really surprised when i encountered him, I really wasnt prepared for a this lengthy battle. It even had a few phases where you had to do something particular. Great job Bioware

I've beaten it on hard twice, one with melee heavy group (which was sort of a pain) and then easily with a ranged heavy group. His moves are predictable and if you micromanage right you can easily avoid most of the damage. Also, take advantage of when he goes dorment in the middle and calls out his adds, use this time to let your heavy hitters blast him away while you pick off the adds with one or two people. Also, with my ranged group I used Carver as a tank in DPS mode (two-hander) to maximize the effectiveness of burning him fast.

I just beat it on hard mode. My comp was Hawke (Mage) Veric, Aveline and Fenris. This would be easier with as little as melee as possible. The key thing to remember is to reposition your guys when he does his roll charge and during arcane bolt phase just position yourself behind the rocks. If you stay behind them you won't get hit. I used about 3 pots and many many heals from mage.

I completed this fight on normal. My third try was successful and still it took more than half an hour. First I thought the wraith was impossible to kill, until I figured out how to exploit his AI. I "divided" my party into two groups. But the most important thing was to press H to have each of your fighters precisely where you want them to. And they should stay there and not charge the boss all the time.
Varric and Bethany stay far away - always close to a pillar - and gnaw at the wraith's health most of the time. If the wraith does an AoE, they hide behind a pillar. If the wraith detects them and starts the forward roll, it won't get to the ranged fighters if there's a pillar on the way. The wraith will just bump into the pillar. Then just retreat your two guys further to elude the wraith's sweeping punches.
My main rogue and Isabela do mostly nothing during this fight. Except run away a lot. If there's a few second opening, they will do assassinate, pinpoint strikes or backstab. At all times these two would stick together and run behind a pillar if the boss starts a big attack. When the smaller mobs get spawned, Bethany and Varric will both target the same profane and pick them off. The same with my two rogues, they leap together at the profanes to kill them ASAP. Since Isabela is the romance interest I had to take her along for the ride instead of a tank or another mage.
After the smaller ones are disposed of, let all of your team lambast the prone wraith. The ranged ones from a secure location, ready to get behind a pillar when the enemy awakens. For me, this battle wasn't about fighting per se, more about survival. If I tried to engage it directly with two rogues, I got mauled badly. Therefore I had to keep my rogues safe and pester the wraith with ranged attacks. This setup took a sweet amount of time, but I managed to keep everyone alive. I assume this method would work pretty well on hard difficulty.
