I read somewhere that people using Win7 had to allocate the 'Z' key for the console.

I'm running the Steam version of DA2 on Win7. I use the tilde < ~ > key for the console.

I remember setting the console up was a pain in the patootie. Be sure you're typing the information correctly. I was going crazy trying to figure out why the console wasn't working. It turned out I had mistakenly typed an incorrect character in the path in the .XML file.

I'm on Windows 7, NOTHING worked except for this suggestion to bind to key Z. Thanks mnomaha.

What I did:
1. changed binding in keybindings.ini to: OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Z
2. changed target for game exe to: "E:\\Program Files (x86)\\Origin Games\\Dragon Age™ II\\DragonAge2Launcher.exe" -enabledeveloperconsole
3. followed EddySpeddy's directions for xml file change here: http://social.biowar...87008/1#6651711

My Win7/64-bit path: "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age 2\\DragonAge2Launcher.exe"

If you have the 32-bit flavour, then it's: "C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age 2\\DragonAge2Launcher.exe".

If neither of those are right for you, then:

a) You don't have a retail disc install, or
B) You have an broken install, or
both.

If B) Most likely solution is: Re-install.
If a) Give more info.

[Edit:  If you cannot access the folder: "\\Program Files", then the account you're using is not an Administrator, and you won't be able to do this.]

Nothing seems to be fixing this and I'm not editing anything in the actual game file, that is a path straight to fail. Frankly, I'm amazed at the ability of designers to take something as simplistic and essential as the console and FUBAR it.

DA2 is based on DAO, which didn't have to take into account Windows 7 having conflicts with the "~" key. It does seem ignorant not to have added a simple work-around for DA2, though.

@GA;
I'm running Win7/64-bit, and have no problems accessing the Dev Console. Is this an issue only for the non-US keyboard layouts?

@stegosaur;
Being able to access the Dev Console is not a game feature which is required for the product to "work as intended". You may call it essential, and you are welcome to think so. But I'd say it's more of a "treat", and one which seems to be available to the majority of players.

Maybe your rig has some non-standard attributes that impact how things work?

Nothing was working for me (Hard purchase copy on windows 7). It seems doing EXACTLY as EddySpeddy says is the way to do it. Needed to specifically copy and paste over that line of code in the .xml file.

I have Z as my hotkey for the console.

MANY THANKS!
