If I use a Heart dialogue, do that put me in a romance? Or can I still be friends with the comapnions without breaking his/her heart?
The reason I'm asking is that when talking to Anders the first time after he has joined you, you have 3 choices where 2 is Heart choices and continue the discution about being a Mage and 1 is telling him to rudly to back off and therefore getting Rivalry points.
So can I use a Heart choice without getting in to a romance? Heck, is it possible to be just friends with Anders?

That caught me off guard too, but you can choose the break up option, and if you just continue like normal, you can quickly regain those points. I think I started the third chapter with him as a full friend, despite the "I don't want you thinking about me that way" deal.

It can't be strictly romance, because I've seen a heart option for Aveline and she's not a LI.

It's flirtatious but not necessarily romance

Yeah its Flirtatious, which means if you can do a romance with them, it'll develop into one. If you can't, it wont and it'll just be an 'attempt' which doesn't go anywhere. The Broken-black heart one though is always a shut-down the romance option. Picking it early is a good way to stop it before it starts, and not earn any points one way or the other.

Point is, there was a broken heart option well before the point you got to that would of stopped that. It's all in act 1, I picked em for Fenris and Anders. Oddly I noticed that only with Anders and Fenris. Isabela and Merrill don't have anything in Act 1 like that.

Ahh maybe I'm wrong though I didn't chat to much with Anders in Act2+ before I started over again. Maybe even if you pick the 'im not into that knida thing' option early on it still crops up later. Pretty sure thats why its there so early though.

Actually there's a heart option for Merrill in act one when you first visit her in her home at the alienage. My character ended up saying 'how about a kiss then?'
I like her - the Welsh accent is cool, I like how awkward she is and the coolest part is that she was in Dragon Age: Origins.

Actually, In the part the OP is talking about, there was no flirting in the first place. it's a "you were nice to me, so that must mean we should bump pelveses" kind of deal. and the only options are to go with it or shut it down, meaning you either commit to anders, give him false hope to be dashed harder down the road, or you take some rivalry points here, and spare the punishment later.

Yeah I went over the first conversation with that. In the 1st selection you can pick a broken heart basically stating your relationship is purely business. Cuts the conversation off immediately but no rivalry points. If you don't go with that and stick to the joking side through out you never get the him flirting with you stuff but also don't prompt the breakup thing either. The Flirting is entirely the 'good' options, as he sees you agree with him and starts to get attracted.

It's not so much you flirting, as him realizing he may like you ( I think that spirits messed with his brain). If you go all Jokes, you get -5 Rivalry and in the next conversation theres a no-rivalry Broken Heart response to take somewhere in there.

Overall seems a lot of people don't realize theres a broken heart in the initial part of the dialog. And anyone trying to be 'friends' often goes the 'good side' thinking that'll work universally (it wont but more likely to). He just happens to start liking you to much if you do that.

I always pick joking at this point just cause I like how that turns out with Hawke's likes, and 5 rivalry (hell 10 rivalry) doesn't mean **** in the long run. There companion quests and other choices has an infinitely larger impact.

Though if your trying to go friends, I'd hold off on any gift-giving till there towards friend side (even just by 5 points). If its just a tiny bit into rivalry all them gifts (rare, i know) will give some +15 shifts towards whichever side your on.

The problem is that you do it in such a rude way and it cuts off the conversation. I hope you can let him down easy the next time we talk.
