You really should try it on at least one playthrough. I know she's crazy and all but she's really good at being likeable to those on her side. And her back-story...I never suspected...Dragonette29 wrote...
She's an interesting character, as much as a pain in the ass, and I'd like to get to know her better, but I just can't bring myself to side with the templars. Mages have a personal meaning for me.

I'm going to try REALLY hard to do this once. Really hard.

I might do it one day... Preferably after a major patch is released.
That it, if I manage to get over saying bad things to Orsino
Is her back-story really that good?

I would've prefered if Orsino was the Templar final boss and Meredith was the Mage final boss.
I agree with this statement.

You don't really have to offend Orsino personally at all.

Before. Side with the templars and Meredith gives you 'Best Served Cold.' Ask about why her mage issues are so personal and she'll tell you then.
I will. Then I'll dump her and side with the mages anyway (having the treasure of sensitive information on the enemy).
Maker, I'm a bad person

Also: Did anyone else have FFVII flashbacks when the blue-eyed, pale blonde haired Meredith runs that Maleficar through and sheathes her sword... EXACTLY like Cloud... at the end of Act2?

It's a conspiracy. Meredith blatantly abused her power to outlaw anyone else having awesome-looking armor like her.
I'm sure she has a net of spies especially for reporting armour-usurpers to her

She did look very good though. I like how she was supposed to be tough and non-compromising from the beginning, but it's just awful that they had to victimize her with some silly relic.

A younger non idol compromised Meredith? My Hawke would tap that !

If you notice when she makes her entrance in Act 2, she does not have the lyrium sword yet.
My Warden and Hawke have always been anti blood mage, so I certainly agreed with her in principle, but not her methods. In Act 3, I felt sorry for her downfall. She had to be removed as Knight-Commander, one way or another.
In her final battle dialog, there is a moment of sanity where she wonders what the heck she is doing. But she's been under the influence of the idol for a long time. It was too late.
It seems to me the idol is an 'amplifier' of negative emotions. In Bartrand, it amplified his jealousy and greed. In Meredith, it amplified her mage paranoia.
Personally, I liked the ending how both Meredith and Orsino go out, and it's not a typical mage versus Meredith or templar versus Orsino showdown. Meredith, Orsino, and Anders all descend into a madness that cannot be stopped.
