I've said it before. The OGB doesn't have to come from Morrigan. Was the Architect not trying to do this very thing? Was Flemeth? There are a variety of ways for an old god to be freed and bound to a human form, given a clean slate to develop into something new.

The warden primes the fuse by defeating the blight and opening the way. The champion of Kirkwall lights it by throwing the Chantry across Thedas into Chaos. And finally, the Old God in mortal form explodes unto the world, shaking it to it's very core. How is this not a great path for the story to take?

Reading that, I'm tipping "he" to be an old god bound in mortal form who has a whole lot of people convinced he is the Maker returned.

This quote makes me wonder if the Fade and the real world (Thedas) are actually supposed to exist as one realm, but were forcefully separated. Hence the tears and rifts into the fade, etc. And the Mirrors were an attempt by non-mages to reconvine with the Fade - since, perhaps, everyone once was a mage. But then something horrible happened, which may have spawned the Darkspawn. Its possible the Tevinters may have had nothing to do with it. It could have been the Arlathans, hence why the Tevinter imperium took it upon themselves to enslave and punish them. Who knows?

Honestly, I've wondered about this for a while.  Dragon Age was always supposed to be a magic comes back sort of thing -- I think I recall reading that in an interview, but the world other than mages, is surprisingly 'unmagical'.  A few dragons here or there, but other than mages, it's surprisingly magic light.  Some sort of separation between the Fade and the World may explain it.  It would also explain why elves stopped being all mages and so on, among other things.

As for what caused it, we really don't know.  A part of me *wants* it to be elves, just because of how they act.  While they're certainly oppressed, if you read the history they weren't exactly clean.  Ignoring ones' neighbors requests for help and watching them go down doesn't really endear yourself to them.  And the whole 'Shem made us mortal' thing just makes me roll my eyes.  There HAS to be a reason for it beyond that, and it'd be poetic if it was self-caused.

I'm going to go with a unique theory, though heavily flawed as it is.

We have seen Flemeth able to break off pieces of herself as shown in Dragon Age II. However, what if she could somehow... manifest these pieces into separate beings, unknowing of their origin and transformed into another being?

In short, what if Sandal is a part of Flemeth?

Ooh, ooh, this is why I hope DA3 is about the plight of the elves and the protagonist is a male or female elf. I'm envisioning an elf rebellion, taking advantage of the chaos in the Chantry, and we get to play an important elf who gets caught up in it all. It'd be really interesting if anything you mentioned there, Nimander, comes up in a story like that too. I'd bet that all the little things we've seen so far about Eluvians, Flemeth aka Asha'belanar (spelling?) and so on would play a part too.

We know that Merrill's Pride demon desired to pass through the Fade into this world through the mirror. So what's to say that a 'god' or other spiritual being couldn't do the same? Morrigan and my hero are likely doing exactly that right now, hiding from Flemeth in the one place she's unable to go to, specifically, the Fade.

I have a suspicion that the 'Wolf' story spoke of trapping the gods in the other realms, when Merril shared the story. Flemeth is for one part or another, trapped in our world as a result, and unable to return to the Fade and the Black City.

I had a similar theory. Except that Sandal isn't part of Flemeth, but a part of the Maker.

Imagine if the Chantry is correct about the Black City (They could be totally wrong though) and The Tevinter tainting it. What if the Maker broke him/herself into a number of smaller pieces (I can't really come up with a why here, maybe to escape the taint, if the Maker is vulnerable to it at all). Sandal's a piece, so is Flemeth, the Warden, and the Champion are pieces too. Leliana is tasked with assembling the pieces, so "he" can return to the world.

However, this is just my crackpot theory. :P

Been sayin it Sadal is behind all of this ****, he's a dwarf that can use magic. He just acts stupid, mark my words he's the next hero, or he runs the show. Maybe he's even the Maker. Or maybe even the reverse of the above comment, Flem, is a part of Sandal.

I like it.. will be basically what Andraste did with the Imperium when it was heavily weakened by the Bligh, but with the mage rebellion.. and resentful elves.. that would definitely topple the Chantry.

Now that I think about it, Bodahn said he found Sandal wondering alone around the deep roads? Isn't that a little strange that a retarded Dwarf is wonding around in a darkspawn infested hell hole ALONE and is A-ok, well minus being able to enchant things and is retarded. Given the event's in DA:O with him in the tower was seen as a joke, and now that I take this and what I've seen in DA:2 into account, he's clearly not just some simple dwarf. Then Suddenly in Witch Hunt he speaks more and is selling crap, yeah I buy that.

That's my thoughts as well!! Also remember when Varric tells the Seeker that someone was sent with the Champion "in a manner of speaking" after the Witch of the Wilds helped him get out of Lothering?  I'm really starting to think Sandal is working FOR her.

Actually I thought Varric was referrng to Flemeth herself. She had a portion of herself in the amulet to be resurrected because she figured Morrigan would get the Warden to off her.

Yeah, I mean if it was a dragon all "I'm a God, worship me!" the people of Theads would be like "OMG It's the Tevinter old gods.. kill it!" but being human, they'd be like "OMG it's the Maker"

Well, in Witch Hunt he wasn't selling it per se, if you notice, when you talk to him Herric (or whatever) comes over, if you ask to buy the screen opens up, if you ask for enchantment he bows and starts to walk away before the enchantment opens.  So, he was assisting Sandal on the sales part.

I wonder if the entire story for the dragon age games has already been decided (like as early as origins development)

Very possibly.  I mean, I'm sure they didn't just write up DA:O and create the whole "Old God Baby" thing then be like "Oh, we'll decide if it matters later".

Lol it's a cool theory, I think. At least it would tie everything up nicely. I'm very curious about why two influential people who both came into contact with Flemeth up and vanished, and I would hope the explanation is something epic like what you suggested instead of something random or mundane.

Its so they all can combine and form VOLTRON!

But something is clearly not as it seems. And Flemeth, the Warden, and Hawk all have a part to play. And Sandal sure as hell has something to do with it. What is the question. I just can't dissmiss him as nothing, too many things add or don't add up with him at all. I think Sandal might be refering to the maker, or an old god, but how would he know that. More importantly how he says it doesn't seem like rubbish.

What about the other quote you get from him "I saw something nasty in the woodshed." Where is this woodshed and what did he see?

Of course it could just very well ge that they needed a tool in order to do the weapon armor enchants and found it easier to just make a comical lil dwarf to do the job, and the devs, added these wierd statements in for those people that click on an item 5,000x in a row.....,=) could be that simple too

Well, more likely Varric is talking about Flemeth being partly in the amulet that she gave Hawke.
