I'd say that depends on your playstyle and all. Can you heal?

My mage is in NM in Act1, level 10.5. He has invested all points in the primal tree except for 1 Fist of the Maker and one in Unshakable.

My party consists of my mage, Aveline, Varric, and Anders. Anders is my dedicated healer/creation mage. Haste is VERY helpful in taking down bosses/elites.

Best party imo, when properly built, is:

2H warrior tank, can make Aveline one.

Merrill

Varric

Healing/CC heavy mage, so that would probably be you.

You can try a rival Fenris + 3 mages setup. I believe this post gives enough info: http://social.biowar...8/index/6481877; requires some skill and some heavy microing to pull it off, but seeing 8655 AoE damage off Whirlwind at mid levels is worth it, in a way. You need to invest heavily into Elemental (Deep Freeze, Elemental Mastery) and Arcane (Arcane Fortress, Mind Blast, buffs) trees. Also, be ready to serve mostly as a support to Fenris. If you'd prefer to see your mage in a lead role, this is definitely not for you :)

My mage, which is currently just sitting at the start of Act 1 (got a rogue there too, playing warrior atm). My plan is Aveline, going pure Str/Con (no Cun) for requirements on weapon/shields. Rest into Con once I meet that 42 Str.

Then Varric as Rogue since hes ranged (or the prince guy if you have that). Rogue's can be good for some bonus CC too with the bottom Sabotage stuff, which only takes 2 points to get Confuse.

That 4th one is kinda 'up in the air' but I'd swap it out depending on companion quest. When your not on that I'd go with Ander's, Merrill or Prince/Varric (if you have the DLC and are using one of the others).

Basically games easier if you have all ranged and 1 melee tank. Though that said my mage play through is gonna be Aveline, Isabela, and probably Anders or Varric. My mage is going Force Mage and Spirit Healer. Going down Creation/Arcane and full into Spirit/Force. Force will keep you on your feet (with the +100 fortitude passive) and give you some good 'oh ****' skills, also ones for forcing groups of enemies together. Spirit Healer (when that other stuff isn't needed) is good just for the 50 regeneration aura, upgrade it fully for 8 yards (pretty big) for 100 regeneration. 100 is 2.5% hp a second. That's enough to literally almost never need healing.

Though due to the distance you have to be from her, I plan to set it up so she uses Battle Synergy -> Hero's Synergy. That's basically 50% threat transfer from any party member in the radius every to the Warrior. Basically will (for the most part) work like a constant Taunt, keep all the enemies focused on her and allowing you to keep her alive. It's a pretty solid tactic overall.

I think Ander's version of the spirit healer stuff is non-upgradeable, just straight +50 regeneration (1.25% per second) but that also means' it can't be upgraded for 8m. Not to big of a deal but if you overlap the 2 (if it acn be) that'd be 3.75% hp per second.

Anyways that's my advice, Aveline as your tank, and either Ander's or you as a Healer. Definitely with the regen aura, Hawke makes the best Healer though. ANother fun thing, just to get the Battle Synergy Aveline will have Rally which basically gives. At base (with out ugprading it) that'll be 50% of your mana back in 10 seconds. Upgraded its 100% of your mana back over 6.6 seconds, but it's still a 10 second long buff heh. That or its worded funny and its 100% over 10.

Aaanyways that whole combination is pretty solid with a Healer mage and Aveline. Just remember HP trumps Cunning unless you can heavily focus on it. Fenris makes the best avoidance tank ultimately. As he only needs STR for item requirements (aka the weapon, 42 tops), rest can be dumped into cunning for a solid base. And even then you'll have to stack %Defense buffs to make that not suck to bad vs bosses. HP and Fortitude is king in tank land. Also, with Aveline - max out her specialization. It's just amazing for tanking overall, do that once its available and only take the basic Sword and Shield stuff when your not doing the Battle Synergy thing.

This is exactly the way I'm playing.  Although I don't have Anders yet, about to grab him.  Or die trying.

I'm a bit surprised I've made it this far without a healer on Nightmare.

Well, I'm sue you noticed that when things spawn they spawn all around your party. So first thing to do is look on the map where you want to retreat and regroup to. If you stay put odds are the reinforcenments will respawn on top of you, which is bad for your survival. A place with a bottleneck is preferable. That is where you put your tank, with her back to the wall so as not to be backstabbed if you suspect an assassin is present, which is usually the case when fighting humanoids. The rest of your party members run back and put their backs to the wall in a position where they can still shoot or cast spells where the tank is. Use the "Hold your position" button to keep everybody in their places. Don't forget to Taunt with your tank to help keep the enemies from running past her.

Now, sometimes before you retreat you may want to cast a quick-casting spell or two but you don't want to stick around too long and have the reinforcements spawn on you when your spells are in cooldown.

As for my mage build, it is pretty simple so far. I intially only put points into the primal tree, saving Rock Armor until I had my offensive spells. Tempest is not a very damaging spell, but it is good crowd control, especially when you get Force Mage. I have not upgraded it or Stone Fist yet. Fist of the Maker is really not very damaging but it puts everything on their back for a second or so and youcan cast it around yourself and it will not damage you. But it WILL damage party members. Petrify is good but it also does not work 100% of the time on NM.

So, to recap,  the primal tree is the base for my mage build. It has only party friendly spells. 2 AOEs, 1 single target (with knockback), one debilitating spell (Petrify), and sustainable spell that boosts your survivability (Rock Armor.) Force Mage provides Fist of the Maker for an additional low damage AOE (minor crowd control) and more importantly, Unshakable ( a passive) to keep my mage from being stun locked and knocked around by every archer and melee hit. The starting spell, Mind Blast I seldom use since I move when I see a threat coming my way or cast something to stop them until my tank can pull them away or they die.  For bosses/elites/assassins, Anders casts haste and both mages shoot, Varric shoots, and if she is feeling brave the tank comes off the wall and shield bashes/pommel strikes. The enemy elite goes down quickly when haste is in use.

Oh, I bought the book from the merchant that gives an extra talent point. Right now, I am feeling the tug between needing more damage and more crowd control for bosses. My next level up will probably either be Horror or Fireball. From the Force line I'll likely pick up Gravimetric Ring and maybe the upgrade that lowers Fist of the Maker cooldown to 10 seconds.

As you can see, as I am playing through, I am getting the feeling of what I need rather than sticking to a strict build.

thanks, thats a great help but what will your second specialization be? And part of my problem is that I want to be a blood mage for fun and story, but I am having trouble using it effectively as well as TACTICS!!! they don't seem to work half the time so part of the reason I am struggling is because Varric and Anders stand around doing nothing half the time

My mAge (Force mage/blood mage + primal), Aveline as tank, anders as healing/creation. and fenris as mass DPS., he just runs around the battle field doing lots of damage.

works pretty well.

I've been really happy Mage Hawke (Elemental, bit of Arcane, bit of Force Mage), Isabela as a Cunning tank, Varric as Controller, and Anders as a Healer.

Functionally it works really well, but I like the party because the party banter is hilarious. Isabela and Varric are comedic gold.

Plus, Isabela just has some of the funniest lines during quests. Really liked her dialogue during the fade quest.

i'm going to an elemental/force mage on nightmare.

Anders going to primal/Spe/creation
Fenris to an heavy magic resist and aeo dps
varic classic dps monotarget

my beginning is very challenging.

the global strategy is to be really offensive regroup the mass... glass cannon, tempest, Fenris ruch in explode everone fire ball to finsIh.
while anders and varric control and destroy every ranged all focus fire on fenris's target...

works great but very challenging at low lvl i'm level 8 now and the team begin to be powerfull, until now i 've too microing and kitting a lot but against standard group that kick ass... sometime i can't believe i'm nightmare, it's really easy... Sometime hard challenge like immunes mobs.

Merill is by far the best character in the game in terms of combat. Work your party around her.

i think anders is far better with vengeange and the fast reload spell casting and big up of power... if combat goes wrong or longer switch for justice
