The Chantry destroyed my entire country, struck the name of its founder from the history books, crushed our gods under its heel, and made slaves of my people.

Oh no... one tiny little building went up.

Elf up, people. Elf up.

Funny how that goes, isn't it?  The Chantry as an institution is responsible for no telling how many innocent deaths, and the practical enslavement of elfkind...but people see the Kirkwall Chantry as the little corner church filled with their friends and neighbors, see Elthina not as the Grand Cleric shirking her duty, but as a sweet, harmless li'l old lady, and all the wrongs committed by the institution just gets magicked away into nothing.

I killed him TWICE that bastard didnt die when my warden did it and so he stalked her as she walked around amaranthine and made an imaginary warden to make him get rid of his imaginary cat. and then he snuck into her tent while she was asleep and became BFF with justice behind my back. so i had hawk finish the job

I had to kill him. Grand Cleric Elthina could've talked some sense into Orsino

Stop right there.  You do know that Orsino aided and abbedded the man who killed your mother.  Orsino was fascinated with and supported blood magic long before the crap hit the fan in chapter 3.

There was no talking sense to Orsino.  He was part of the problem.

The other part was the idol.  It possessed Meredith.  So there was no talking sense into her either.

I killed Anders for being a mass murderer.  But nobody was going to talk sense into anybody.

Indeed. The more sane thing Hawke coul've done was nuke Kirkwall and kill all those idiots.

And in the DAO epilogue, the Chantry was talking about starting another Exalted March and going against Orzammar.

They are a conquering military force, not a peaceful organization promoting free will, and voluntary adhesion to their beliefs.  It's pretty much convert (or, at the very least "submit", "don't oppose us"), or be destroyed.

I suppose it doesn't help that they believe the Maker will supposedly return to them only if the Chant of Light is spread throughout all the corners of Thedas.  Quick!  We must take over the world, or be doomed!  *Sigh*

Killed anders on my first playthrough and sided with mages. I wonder if Bioware will introduce dlc that has an option to finish the war.

This may be the best summary of the DA2 plot I've seen.

I kill him every time, because I don't like him. I didn't really care that he blew up the Chantry. I did feel bad for the brainwashed civilians inside, but i didn't really care. I just wanted to kill him every since the second conversation when I realized that he wasn't Awakening Anders anymore and all he was going to do was complain at me.

This.

I love it when the most rational way to wrap up a storyline is to KILL EVERYBODY.

I didn´t, but if I manage to play again the game I´ll probably will. Not so much for nuking the Chantry as because he says clearly he won´t accept compromises, so I find likely he would sabotage any possible peace he doesn´t like.

Oh I know, right?  What kind of sissy feels it's worth talking about if a monolothic religious empire is brutally oppressing them with murder, rape, and torture?  So what if the templars basically stole his lover's soul for the great crime of writing a letter saying "it sucks here"?  It's not like he had to endure anything REALLY terrible, like hearing a video game character complain.  That's like the worst fate imaginable.

Every main character should be like Squall from Final Fantasy VIII.  The only acceptable thing to say is "...  Whatever."  Only crybabies voice dissatisfaction with a slow borderline-genocide.

I never said he didn't have stuff to complain about. It's worth talking about the oppression of mages, but as Carver once said to Anders "I don't hate you because you're a mage, I hate you because won't shut up about it."  I just don't want to hear it all the time. That's why I never put Anders and Fenris in the same party anymore. Also I was just really upset that he wasn't that Anders I liked anymore. It seemed like they ruined him.

I like the philsophical debates as much as the next person but hearing the same thing over and over...yeah no. That was and is just my opinion on it. There's no need to be so offended over a video game. Chill out. :D

And I've never played a Final Fantasy game before so I don't know who Squall is...does anyone recommend that I play FF? Is it good?

I personally recommend Final Fantasy 5; but with 13+ games to choose from all with vastly different game play as well as art styles, nobody can just recommend an entire series. But this is getting a little off topic. :P

I know how you feel. If you take DA2 Anders as a new character he is very interesting with all the glowy stuff going on. If you were expecting the old Anders (at least somewhat) prepare to be disappointed.

I can't kill him. He helped me too much saving not only my life many times but also my sibling. (I prefer them out of Merediths reach and go GW route.)

I don't even do exiled prince most games so I don't have to listen to Mr. Hypocrite raising an army to destroy Kirkwall. (How quickly he forgets that appalled him that the divine might do the same and he was against it). blah

Killed him and had absolutely no qualms doing it. I actually didn't help him distract the Grand Cleric on my initial play through. I went through the dialog choices hoping my reputation with him was high enough for him to tell me what he was up to. He didn't tell me, I told him to get bent, and then later....*BOOM*

I was pissed beyond all levels of pisstitude. Mages vs. Templars...blech, that wasn't the point to me. The point was that I thought he was my friend and he goes and betrays my trust. Betrays my trust AND kills the innocent. I've romanced Anders once just to see the outcome, but after that I reloaded and went on to somebody else. I completely fell off the Anders fangirl boat after he went all Die Hard on the Chantry.

I was angry that after all the build-up of Justice/Vengence/Glow-ance/That thing where he glows and rips people's heads off...

The way he finally deals his biggest blow of the game is with some Anarchist Cookbook garglygook.

Of all the uses for your tortured Abomination, you pick the Mage Tim McVeigh.

Son, I am disapoint.

i spared him. i'm just that kind of person. anders was the product of the chantry and it's templars, and if you push and push eventually a man has to lash out; strike back. i feel compassion for a man who has reached such despair and desperation.

I have yet to see Anders being pushed in a way that's special compared to other companions and NPCs.
He's just not that special.

I've killed him a few times. Actually, I think I've killed him in 80% of my plays. The very first I was a mage, I romanced him and sided with the mages. So natch, he came with me. The few times after that I killed him (murder knife) out of irritation and being pissed off with his whole way of doing things. Once I sided with the templars and let him go on his own way, only to have him appear later on. I one-shot him, heh.

Didn't they fix his rivalry ending in 1.03 so you can get him to side with the templars? I tried it just recently but he refused. I had him at 100% rivalry. The only thing I can think of is that I refused to help him sneak into the chantry after we gathered all of the ingredients for his special 'potion'. He was pretty pissed about that...

I think you need to:
- Have him at 100% rivalry;
- Convince him in previous dialogues that joining with Justice was wrong;
- Help him sneak into the Chantry...  And then, when you talk to him afterwards, try to convince him that whatever he has planned, there would still be time to stop it (Justice will come out and order you to leave Anders alone...  Then Anders says that he's experiencing more and more memory lapses, and no longer has the strenght to fight Justice anymore...  He says something along the lines of "I've tried, don't hate me for failing).

Only if all these conditions have been met will you be able to convince Anders to side with you against the mages and help the Templars in restoring order.

If not, you'll just be "rivals", and Anders will still be willing to fight you if you side with the Templars.
