Imagine in act I where you are supposed to gather 50 golds, you spend all the money instead of going to start the expedition. Will you be stuck in act I? Did anyone try it?

I did that. You eventually get a quest where some dwarf thug offers to lend you 50 gold and you have to pay him back double when you get back.
You don't actually lose the money, though. Your character pays it back without deducting it from your gold. He does attack you later, though. He asks you for more money, and if you don't have enough, he'll jump you in an alley way.
