On my first playthrough, I gave Martin his cargo despite it being poison.
On my second, I didn't.
What I am wondering is if it ultimately matters which I choose? I don't recall there being any story consequence either way, perhaps other than maybe gaining rivalry with companions after quest turn in? I usually ESC-key plow through dialog though, so I wonder if perhaps I missed some mention of him (and the decision) later on.

I think the quest just ends and nothing happens. If I recall correctly.

If you give it to him he'll be a like a store throughout the game where you can buy and sell items, if you don't he won't be there.

That's interesting. I never go to the back of the tavern, so I must not have noticed before.
