Mages can wear armor as long as they meet the stat requirements right?
Is there a penalty for mages in DA2 when wearing armor? In Origins there was.
I don't know why, but I've been playing this whole time assuming that I couldn't wear armor.

Well, there's a few reasons why you might not want armor.
1. It makes you a greater target.
2. You take valuable attribute points from magic/willpower...

Nope, no penalty. If you meet the requirements, you can wear the armor.
But the thing with armor is that you have to invest in constitution and a strength. Constitution is always nice to have, but I think strength is absolutely useless on a mage (unless you want fortitude). Willpower and magic is ideal for mages. Willpower gives you mana pool and magic increases the damage of your spells and the chances your staves will hit. Although you can wear armor as a mage, there are indirect consequences in doing so. As in, you'll be putting precious attributes on points that doesn't really fit the mage role.
