DA:O did not live up to Bioware's "spiritual successor" line, but it was still a very good game in it's own right.
The Baldur's Gate series was Bioware's masterpiece. The BG series belong in the RPG Hall of Fame. It was a mistake for Bioware to call DAO a successor, not the players' fault, because it created stupidly high expectations.

.... LOL, Thats so true.
Really this happens when anything gets released. Forums get flooded by the Vocal Minority who are so upset over their pet feature having been changed that they make thread after thread on the same topic. I seem to recall alot of hatred directed at Fallout 3 back in 2008 because it was "Oblivion with Guns" and now people herald Bethesda games as the greatest thing ever.

Naturally people are entitled to express their opinions (as long as they do it in a way that complies with the forum rules) but right now it seems as though everyone who dislikes the game wants their own thread to complain about it.

as a person who has been on these boards for a few years it happened with both Mass Effects and it does seem to be the norm for these boards when a new game is released by Bioware

Dragon Age: Origins was dumbed down and consolized. Just like everything else in the industry today. BioWare's just always been able to make up for it with depth and polish. DA2 is fundamentally different from every game BioWare's made since at least Throne of Bhaal or maybe vanilla NWN, at least from my perspective. It's a game that's literally just "okay" and average to slightly above average from a developer that people are used to see only ever develop way above average games. I think that's the big difference here.
Like I've said, I don't dislike Dragon Age 2, heck it's even charming to some degree...but it's the kind of game I would expect to see from a less well-known developer, certainly not one with any kind of established record in the industry. What AAA developer would ever think it was okay to use the same 5 areas over and over and over again? Let alone BioWare for gods sake. We are truly through the looking glass now that that day has arrived.

On one side there's the sane people who just mind their own business, and on the other side is the crazy people ruining the other side's fun. Why complain anyway? Nothing's gonna be accomplished.

Hold on be fair here. How exactly is someone complaining about the game actually going to ruin someone elses fun? I'm not a fan of the game at all, but I won't look down my nose or belittle those that do enjoy the game.

DA2's still very enjoyable..
played ME2 couple of playthroughs, but can't get over the feeling it's very hollow.
depth/ detail deprived, action itself isn't quite good cover system tactical shooter either.
ME3 needs some significant leap.
Either it's detail / depth or quality of action shooter...
Hopefully they don't put all their effort only into graphic part.

B ... I... N-G-O.
Sure, any game will deserve some criticism. But the OMG WURST GAAM EVR! has gotten old fast. Especially when people start claiming that Origins is what DA2 needs to be... eventhough Origins had the same caterwauling when it first came out.

Especially when all the complainers can't manage to stay to one thread... 100 pages on one thread on one topic is something to consider. 2 pages on 50 different threads, all on the same topic? Hard to take seriously. It's like a bunch of megalomaniacs pushing and shoving to get in front of the camera, who seem to feel that having 'their' thread on the boards is more important than getting behind someone who has already created a critical topic.

Consumer feedback/data?
This site imo is more of an information gathering tool for bioware/EA than it is for us.

Maybe I didn't make my point clear. We have all these complainers, and they annoy me so much. While they are entitled to their opinions, they feel the need to force them upon us.
That's just the way I see it, no need to make a big deal.

Of course it's Normal. It ALWAYS happens on week 1 of a game's release. Especially if that game is a sequel.Mauross wrote...

And pretending that what we're seeing on these boards this week constitutes something "different" is to either be extremely dishonest, or extremely clueless to forum feedback on new releases.
But hey, don't take my word for it. The old Bioware boards still exist. Read them. visit the archives sometime and read the threads posted in around November of 2009. The EXACT same flood of negativity afflicted DA:O when it first came out.
