I am playing a mage Hawke and I have tried about 30 times but I cannot beat them, more specifically I cannot beat the Lieutenant and the Hunter...they keep on drinking potions....does anyone know what strategy I could use to beat them?

I tried this mission as soon as it was available, but could not complete it on Nightmare. I did a bunch of other quests, leveled up a few times, and completed it then. You could try the same thing.

How high was your level? I am already level 10 and I cannot beat it; I run to the back but I still can't beat it; it's impossible; damn leutenant and hunter! How did you beat it?

I couldn't beat it at level, err, 6 or 7 as a mage, either. It was really frustrating because I thought I might have had a chance if I'd brought Carver at that point instead of Merrill (she didn't have much utility then, not yet - use her all the time now). And as it turns out I had forgotten to save before I had Anders take me inside, so I had to backtrack through about 3 hours of tooling around Kirkwall. I'm about to try it again at 9 or 10, Merrill and I are both stronger. We'll see how it goes.

I did it at level 5 or so as a tank hawke... I went straight to the anders recruitment after getting to kirkwall. Took me a few reloads though lol.

Dont forget to quickly smash the archers - take them out before going for the hunter/LT. Also try and deal with all the adds on the first wave before the 2nd wave comes, just so you don't have so much to try and control. Bethany with a wintergrap and Varric focusing them will take them out pretty quickly.

I used Aveline to keep the other mobs off the squishies while getting hawke to aggro the hunter while pretty much ignoring the LT unless he was on a squishy. When the archers were dead, Varric/Bethany focus the hunter and swap to a regular mob when the hunter stealths. With a mage hawke I guess you'd have to use Aveline to try and hold aggro on as much as she can, and focus the adds down as quick as possible (with rdps that shouldn't be too hard though, take the archers first of course). If something goes after Anders, leave it alone for the moment since it'll effectively be out of the fight.

You can forget about defeating the Templars! I am playing 'Casual' Hawke is at least level 5 or above and I have lost ten straight. No matter what I do. At some point in the battle you characters can no longer use health potions and so all die. There also seems to be a never ending flood of templars coming from god only knows where. Targeting, Hawke just standing in place and not attacking no matter what you do. Yea. A lot to look forward to. btw taking out the archers is almost impossible as you get back damage from the hunters who come out of nowhere.
I have also noticed that targeting seems to have something wrong with it.  During a battle I try to target certain individuals and nothing happens.  Even after several tries my character does not attack.  Also, during combat there comes a point where all my character does is stab with a single blade and not even use his shield; he looks like someone trying to stab a gerble with a toothpick.  All the abilities he is suppose to have seem frozen.  When I say Hawke just stands there I am not talking about the 'stun' from a combatant he just stands there and won't respond.  I would hope that there might be a big patch coming soon.  Something needs to be done to improve the game play on this.  With the exception of these numerous frustrations the game is growing on me.

That mission isn't even the worse, try Fenrir's mission on Nightmare.
You literally fight about 20 slades in every room, its ridiculous. They respawn 3 times , 8 at a time.

But I would stack up on bombs, it helps to slow down the archers who run in the second swarm.
The Grenade Combulsion bomb works wonders in that fight.

I finally managed it, just needed to respec Hawke into a Spirit Healer...not finding blood mage very useful to be honest.

Did this on level 5 with DW Hawke. After many reloads, I finally resorted to cheap tactics which worked first time. The moment the fight begins, I ordered all my party to get downstairs into the main hallway. After a short while the LT approached by himself. Killed him, though it's crazy how long he took to go down despite all 4 characters focusing. Then sent Aveline up the stairs by herself to pull the remaining mob. Ran her back downstairs so the whole party could get involved. Did the same thing for the second wave. I do think there was some luck involved as the Hunter focused on Anders instead of following Aveline downstairs. From what someone else said, I wish I had had winter's grasp. Bethany just wasn't doing enough damage with my spell selection. And DW rogues have survivability issues (at least at low levels).

i had 0 issues with Fenrir on nightmare... o.o

the 'boss' battle was a joke.  The boss died before any of the slades got up the stairs

Pull them downstairs to stop the waves spawning on you. Pick them off one by one. If your playing a mage, never, never open the battle with an AoE. They will ignore your tank and rape your caster. Kite the LT downstairs and kill. Then back up to finish the rest. They are easy enough without him buffing. If you WANT to keep the LT and mage hunter together to fight, well..... good luck.

Opened with a Cone of Cold+Fireball+Firestorm combo (quickly killed most of them), taunted the rest and ran back to the doorway, hit my back to the wall (whoever came up with the Templar Hunters should die in a fire, backflipping ninjas in heavy armor, yeah). If your back faces the wall no rogue can backstab you, they just reappear with a simple hit to the face.

Anders tanked the second wave while I killed the rest downstairs, then picked them off one by one. Did in at lvl 8 if I'm not mistaken, Tank Hawke, Bethany, Varric, Fenris.

You need to keep killing the mobs ( especially the ranged ones ) also its important to cc the captain whenever he is trying to do his aura thing. Also positioning is so important, never let them get your mage in a corner! This way I did it on nightmare at lvl 6 or something. I had to load a couple of times though :/

Two tanks, Varric and mage. Use stun and crowd control (petrify is good), poison, and run for the hills when the hunter/assassin stealths (from one end of the hall to the other). No need to cheese this one, but you will need to micro your party. Anders will effectively stun lock the Lieutenant. Just don't attack him. One tank takes the initial crowd, Fenris keeps the archers busy and Varric and Mage take them all down one by one. Once they're clear every one concentrate on hunter until he's dead. Lieutenant is a joke compared to the hunter.

Change up your tactics, respect, etc or gain levels if what you're doing doesn't work. Regardless of what the whiners say, there are tactics at nightmare...it's required.

Just beat it on my 8th try (on nightmare),I'm level 7 and play Mage Hawke with Merril, Carver and Aveline, trick for me was to run to the other side of the building and hide in the only room with a door that opens, I killed the LT there then ran back over and did some heavy burst dps and stuns to kill the hunter.
