Everything Hawke did was pure and simple coincidence.  It'd be like playing Oghren in DAO.  While cool... he was definately not the main character.  He was just following someone else's ideas.

This is why it's interesting. This is what real historical figures generally are. Just a person, in the right place at the right time, forced to do something bigger than themselves. Give me that over AND THEN HE KILLED A DRAGON any day.

out of me.

Maybe some people like complex shades of grey politics better than AN EVIL INSIDE OUT DRAGON IS GETTING THE DARKSPAWN ALL ANGRIED UP, A HERO IS NEEDED TO STOP IT. *I* find black and whites boring. I love DA:O, but it stopped being interesting after the Landsmeet.

I totally agree! What made this game so different and interesting for me was the politics and how everyone's got different plans/plots going on that all comes together at the end. The Petrice quests were some of my favourite moments in the game. She was such a compelling character without needing use force to show how dangerous she is.

How does that relate to what I said at all? I am pointing out that people are acting as if the fact that this sets up a future game excuses the lack of an epic plotline in this one. And you are talking about... something else. I don't get it?

You're talking about how bored you were with the plot because it lacked an overarching theme while we're talking about how much we enjoyed it for the politics? Doesn't get any simpler than that.

Everything was lovely except for the ending. It felt so rushed after Meredith's death. I needed some time to see Hawke's resolution with the other characters.

It'd been more interesting if Meredith herself had turned out to be an Apostate as well. That would have been incredibly deeply epic.

They discuss that Orlesians are in the middle of a civil war, its likely that the Grey Wardens being from that area, are just as much being considered the antagonists. When in fact, I suspect they are just as interested in why the Darkspawn haven't disappeared, and why this new problem came as a result of our finding it. But yes, I admit all of the unanswered questions is just screaming for more DLC.

I loved the plot itself, but there were too many corners cut in its presentation. And the ending fights didn't carry the same weight that the endings to ME/ME2/DA:O did. The conversations BEFORE the big fight were incredibly gut-renching and awesome, but the fights were.... meh. Orsino suddenly went evil with little reason and Meredith changed from a legitimate character to "mwahahahah" power-infected badguy. How/why did she even get the idol? Came out of nowhere and ruined her character for me. She was no longer the foil to my Hawke who, despite her differing opinion and harsh nature, was understandable in her fierce dedication. She was now just another stock villain with superpowers.

Then, to top it all off, we get "and then there was a big mage war annnnnd... the end!" There was no real resolution for the character(s) we'd become attached to. The entire game suffered from this. Before/after companion quests, we got a little dialogue but not much. We didn't get to speak with them too much in between, either. Climactic moments didn't get their due amount of time to develop. Everything about the game's presentation was just cut corner after cut corner. The plot itself and the shift from a plot-based narrative to a much more character-based one was great, but it's pretty clear to me that the game wasn't given enough time to cook.

I blame EA's deadline for that.

I just finished my first play through as a mage. I liked the story over all, It didn't really come as much surprise that the idol would play an important part as I already believed Meredith was supreme ruler of crazy town. The idol just provided an excuse for her behavior. Though the first enchanter was just as bad, in my views. In a way he benefited from the death of Hawk's mother.

Disposing of the both of them seemed right.

As for Sebastian Vael. I don't think I'll give a crap about his whiny butt anymore. I'm kind of wishing he went up with the chantry. He spends three years praying and trying to decide if he wants to be a leader for his people or a priest. Then finally when Ander's does him a favor and blows up the chantry he's threatening to go to war. I'm so glad he finally decided to do something with his life.

Wait what am I thinking, it's not like he'll produce an heir. Bah worthless prince! Why did I kill Anders?!

Yes. Bioware made this mistake with mass effect 2 as well. Granted Dragon age 2 had wonderful story elements, awesome choice descisions, wonderful and relevant banter between the characters, great implementation.....but what a disjointed mess of a story. Dragon Age impressed the living hell out of me with its epicness....Dragon Age 2 impressed me with its improvements in gameplay and world immersion but the story lacked that epicness that the first one had.

Maybe it is just different to me. I never thought about the Idol after the companion side quest in Act III. I just didn't like the ending at all. It felt like KOTOR 2. (For my play through) Act II the Warden is missing. Act III King Allister is told the Warden should be back in Denerim. Then at the end, Both Hawke and the Warden is missing. For saying Dragon Age 2 is not a direct sequel but a separate story in same setting to me is misleading.

See I actually liked the political plot, but the overall events were weakly attached to each other.

Agree with the OP. The idol thing wasn't hashed out nearly enough for it to be the reason for what happened at the end.

Great action game. As an RPG it is mediocre at best.

I think the idol has something to do with the Blight and darkspawn. We don't know where they come from only that they just appeared and attacked the dwarves. Bertrand keeps talking about the song and it drove him mad. Who knows though.

I actually like the storyline more this time around. I felt the Darkspawn were too two dimensional (evil horde of murderous disfigured monsters) and not ever Awakening really remedied this completely. Choosing between thinking humanoids with feelings goals emotions was alot more tense. And they limited the "I'll save the day with no harm done option" that was too prevelent in DA:O.

Like in redcliffe. You should have had to choose between blood magic and a sacrifice, killing the boy, or killing Redcliffe citizens while you were farting around in the tower/fade.

^Totally agree!

I'm still on my first playthrough so I haven't got to the end yet but honestly I feel like I'm just playing it now out of love for DA:O .  I wasn't even able to import my save lol I just feel loyal to the series and feel like I should give it a chance...

I personally liked all the side quests etc. I just feel like that game was lacking a main plot.  Just reading about this idol bollocks makes me look back and try to rememeber when/how often it was even mentioned.
Maybe the story in DA:O was a little obvious "save the wardens, save the world" or w.e. but it worked! It was epic!
I'm so in love with DA:O and not too impressed with the feeling that this game is a set-up for DA3, or for future DLC.  The trailers and teasers were so epic, I just feel a little let down.

Imo I don't even feel that attached to my character this time.  My warden was badass, was the queen and everyone liked her lol in this one she's just an errand-girl who does any little task she can find for a bit of dosh.

Kinda feels like the relationships are forced down my throat this time too, and I don't even feel attached to any of the characters this time:/ My heart skipped a beat when I saw Leliana and I hoped so badly she would join me and was so dissapointed when she didn't.  And they totally turned Zevvy into a little elfish perve (Plus he sounds like bloody Antonio Bandaras)
Anders is now a wet blanket and lost his sarcastic charm, and worse of all they ruined Alistaire!! He's a chubby, bumbling idiot D: I fell in love with how he was in DA:O T_T

/rant over.... DA:O the next chapter, can I have it please?

Your epic is my cliche I suppose. I much prefered choosing the fate of the Magi/Dwarfs/Elves/Redcliffe over killing the arch demon. The fun part of DA:O ended with the landsmeete.

I think the plot is just not done yet. There are alot of questions. The biggest I had was why did flemmeth ask you to bring her to kirkwall? O_ô She could have flied herself, right? Might that be important?

Just like when Isabella stole the artefact from me and ran away when the war with the Quanari began? She is still displayed in my companion list when I choose my party. Fenris however, that I killed, is no longer displayed there...
They'll probably continue the story with DLCs

There were alot of hints about the idol. Plenty enough to put together if you were looking. I'll be the first to admit though, that I didn't guess it until Meredith pulled her sword out.

The biggest hint was Varric's "If we had known what we'd find in the deep roads, we never would have went..." scene with Cassandra. Plus, since he's the narrator the focus of his story would be from his perspective, i.e. the things which most effected him would be the crux of the matter. That was definitely the idol in his case.

Not guessing the end before the end should be a good thing!

Flemeth says the amulet was her back up. Morrigan killed her in Fereldin. The amulet is at least one of the ways she comes back after being "Killed".

I'm actually wondering if she is the dread wolf...

People always complain about the middle ground game, where they don't really do that much but instead set up for the finale. It's like that in games, books, movies. Everything.

It's not a bad game because of it's ending. It's not a good game because of it's ending, either. DA2 isn't bad, but it isn't the best thing ever, either. It's a very fun game and it really picks up near the end, but at the end of the day it's #2. #2s normally lead up to #3. #2s cannot have some epic story that resolves everything, because then there would be nothing left for #3.

So while a game ending can't make up for a game being good/bad/whatever, a game ending also cannot condemn an entire game to be good/bad/whatever.

I can't decide if  I hope you are right or not.  On one hand I  hope you are because It feels kind of unfinished, with no real main plot.

Yet on the other hand I would be kind of dissapointed in the writers or w.e. if this was just a set up for DLC or a sequel :/

The mention/inclusion of people like Morrigan/Flemmeth/Tthe Warden etc just feels weird (forsake of a better word) since it's put in there for no real reason (yet maybe?) and kind of feels like they were put in for the fans maybe idk.  I just feel like some stuff, like the cameos, were put in just to keep us playing and hoping that they will return (And I still hope they do )

Just feels to me like the "main plot" could have been a DLC or expansion.  I enjoy it, just feels somewhat lacking for it to be the main plot.

All just my opinion, just feeling a little dissapointed after all the hype T_T

On the plus note though I <3 the combat system ^^;
