I was really let down by Isabela. This probably best explains why.
Meh i didnt have a problem with A 4 way with Isabela and Leliana and Zevran, it'd be hyprocritical to bash Isabela based on that, at least in my Hawke's PoV. (please Zevran knows enough not to cross swords.

Yeah, I like it when the romance ties into the story, even though those romance always have the most heartbreak.
Also, Anders and my Hawke just crackled with chemistry as soon as they set eyes on each other. I was still undecided about who I was going to romance, and it was like being struck by lightning. Adorable tragic insane terrorist apostate lightning

I'm on Fenris in this most recent playthrough. I completely missed the part where he left me (he says "I have to go" often enough, anyway, I assumed he meant for a couple of days, not three years?). But he's back now, so I guess it don't matter none. I didn't find his grouchiness that bad... I actually found it kind of comical, I guess. That and his JRPG hair, sword, and sprint (have you seen him sprint with a two-handed sword in combat? HILARIOUS).
Merril bugs me because she reminds me of Tali, only with a derp factor of x10 and a self-righteous attitude to boot. I find Isabela too immature... I like dirty humor, but she's like a pre-teen. I also have big personal problems with infidelity. Still, she has abandoned me every playthrough in Act 2 so far so I'll try to actually make friends with her and see if she has some adorable hidden somewhere in there.

No, I preffered Viconia, but I romanced Merril here. Merrill has a lot more character than Aerie did, imo. Aerie didn't make me split my sides laughing. Aerie was the "wounded dove" type. Merrill has issues, but she isn't constantly whining about them, in fact, most of the time she's bearing up very well. Maybe a little too heavy on the "oblivious", but that's almost opposite Aerie.

I can't really compare in terms of how much content they have quite yet, but I feel like the codex entries and few conversations implied a whole lot more depth to the relationship that went on offscreen - and for me, this was actually successful.

Through all of the five playthoughs I've gone through, I only bothered doing a romance once. Every other Hawke goes it alone.
I'll try to see if I can endure it.

I just started a new playthrough and I'm planning on gunning for Fenris. We'll see how it turns out.

In that case...
Fenris. Yes, he's broody, makes his anti-mage views clear from the start and keeps trying to show you how magic is the worst thing since dinosaurs got extinct, but he's better than the alternatives.
POV1: I lived my whole life running from templars who want to lock me and my baby sister up --> I won't trust the Chantry to protect me, I won't trust that the Circle works and I sure as hell will help apostates go free.
POV2: He's been enslaved, allowed himself to be branded (to save his family) and deprived basic human freedoms by a magister of the Tevinter Imperium. If you bother to hire Orana, you see how broken slaves can be. Even after I tell her that she'll be a normal servant, she still calls me Mistress with that adoring voice and tries to see to my every need...
If I were enslaved by cats in a land where only cats can rule I'd probably hate all cats on principle. Cynicism isn't a crime.
And yet... he can 'get off his high-horse' enough to fall in love with a mage... and let go off his hatred enough to save innocent people if his lover asks it of him. I can respect that.
As for comparing him to Edward... meh. Personally, couldn't stand the bloke. Neither him nor Bella.
Merrill - The down-to-earth mage from DA:O really did a 180.
Anders - Anders... oh, Anders.
Isabella - As a friend she's awesome. I love her humour ("apostitutes" <3), I like the fact that she puts her problems ahead of the "big issues" and she's a damn useful companion. But as a romance option... I like my bed-partners to have some standards.Visiting Anders to get a ... ...cure? I'm not going there.

After having played the game, my opinion of Anders hardly changed. It deteriorated, actually. Honestly, Hawke only just met him, didn't even flirt with him but accidentally chose to say something diplomatic to one of his questions, and he immediately goes "Oh, I adore you, but please don't adore me, for I am a hundred per cent certain I will break your heart. Woe is me!". YOU ONLY JUST MET, for pity's sake. Ugh.
Way too melodramatic and self-pity-ish for my tastes. Completely lost interest in any romantic involvement between him and my Hawke after that. Really, if there is an Edward Cullen hidden among the LI's, it's this one right here.
Became interested in Sebastian after hearing his "Oooooh dear, I should really go start praying a lot now."-line, but the whole thing with Anders got in the way of going through with it. For which I was grateful later. Don't get me wrong, I liked Sebastian, I just couldn't think of any plausible reason my Hawke would fall for him. So another nu-huh there.
And then came Fenris. Started another playthrough, for even though I was skeptic, I figured I should at least give it a shot before jumping to conclusions. I was surprised at how he seemed to tolerate my mage Hawke (pursued a Friendship romance, considering I was at that time still firm in my belief things wouldn't end well with a Rivalry at the endgame part), and after the whole Hawke-teaches-him-how-to-read-bit when giving him his gift, my opinion started to mellow.
After the cutscenes, dialogue, and ending, no one was as surprised as I was when discovering out of all the LI's, my Hawke would probably fit most with Fenris.
So yes. Out of the one's I've pursued so far, Fenris is the most enjoyable. Should probably go roll a BeardHawke and give the XX-romances a try.

I was more than a bit skeptic of the LI's in this game. The fact Anders was so different didn't really bode well, and I've never really been a fan of should-really-consider-anger-management-types.

Hmm. I did flirt with him right from the get-go, but he held back on the heartbreak stuff until Act 3. Then again, I played a male character and it sounds like you played a female, so I wonder if that makes a difference. Or maybe it's the flirt option versus the diplomatic one (though you'd think flirting with him would spur him towards those "don't date me" speeches). At least on my playthroughs, I liked Anders' arc. By the time I got the heartbreak speech, my Hawke had already fallen for him.

Depends on how you have your character behave actually. My Mage Hawke who romanced her did make use of the blooming rose a few times each chapter so he slept around a bit as well (but he didn't sleep with any of the other romancible characters).Indolence wrote...

Anyways, she does actually start getting some standards when you romance her in my opinion. I.E. you can ask her to not sleep with Zevran in Act 3 when you meet him. Sure she still flirts around but that's part of who she is I think.
Considering that she constantly breaks into your house and stuff on top of having a high sexual appetite, she probably is over every night for the most part I think.ToastPants wrote...
I personally love the Isabela romance. It kinda annoyed me at first that it's so drawn out over the three acts, but then I realized that's probably much more realistic for her character, who is fairly anti-emotions in the beginning. I like that they actually evolved her character, and kept her IN character the whole time.
Also, come on. Sexy pirate.
Wish I could get her to move in though.

Isabela is by far the best in my opinion.
But I will say that what happened to my mate (in the real world not in game) after he and Merrill had sex was by far the most legendary thing in the world I've seen. I won't annoy you with the story PM if you're curious
Anyway I liked Isabela a lot as a character, she had backbone, was strong, cracked a lot of jokes and could take them, she's fun and attractive![]()
And the romance feels rewarding and you just feels like she actually cares about Hawke. This of course goes to great voice acting and a great work to the writer Sheryl Chee
Varric made me smile when he said everyone left me but Isabela
^this
I went into my first playthrough expecting to hate isabela, and ended up finding her to be one of my favorite companions. And the romance starts off really rocky, but was very rewarding in the end. i also found her to be the companion that really develops the most as a character.
Im gonna try to get through a playthrough romancing merril just to see how it ends, but after that its always going to be isabela(unless the merril romance really blows me away)
