Merrill hands down.

I know she may come off as ditzy or innocent all the time because her tone doesn't change much, but I find her to be delightfully sarcastic very witty, and quite a joker.

She is sweet but my Hawke usually romances Anders. I did some PT with Isabela, Fenris and Sebastian "for science" but never could see Merril as more than a sister.

Fair enough.

As far as story and character development goes, the person who has the best romance overall in my opinion is actually Morrigan.

My favorite is Fenris. Even on my second play through, I'm having a hard time not picking him again. I don't really care for Anders as an LI, so I'm considering Isabela or Merrill next.

It's too bad Varric isn't available. He seems to have the most stable personality of Hawke's friends.

Not sure how long ago this was resurrected (admit, I didn't look past the page I was posting from...:P), but my favorite is Fenris. Isabella's romance was nice too. I would have romanced both Aveline and Varric in a heartbeat, had they been available. As for connections to the story, Ander's would be someones best choice for story connection (wtih Isabella a close second due to Act 2). I have done Anders romance, but I have a hard time divorcing myself from his actions. As for Merrill, very cute but waaaaaaay too much a "little sister". I have made a Hawke for her, but have yet to get into that PC...yet. May not be able to. *shrug*

If you are looking for a relatively happy ending with your LI of choice; Fenris and Isabella have a rather satisfying conclusion. Merrill could also be considered as such, but I suppose that depends on the fate of her....mmmm....pet project. If you are looking for angst and/or story connection, choose Anders.

Or just choose whom ever you "fancy". :D :D :D

Why does everyone say Fenris is Emo? First time I romanced him and got his whole story I thought of a more polished version of Wolverine, what with the whole amnesia thing, angry wild man, fugitive, living weapon thing going on there...lol. I didn't jump to FF7... Anders is a milk-sop and a bastard, lol. I cringe when he gets compared to Alistair. Now Fenris and Alistair have more in common, imo... Mage hating virgins with a sense of humor, although Al's humor is more noticable. Fen's is really dry and snarky. And I've never tried the women...I do wish Varric was an option, I love his character. He is easily my personal fave from the DA 2 cast.

I'm so sick of 'broken toys'. If I had the option Varric or Aveline would have been my picks since I found them to be the most stable of Hawke's companions. But, sadly neither of those are options.

Compared to Alistair in DAO, none of the romances in DA2 even came close for me, but by default, Isabela was my favorite. She displays remarkable depth whether romanced or not as long as you get her approval (either friend or rival) up and her character continues to grow throughout the game. She forms a close bond with the other two females in the group, and I always imagined my Merrill-romancing Hawke sails off into the sunset with his two favorite ladies on her new ship. My favorite (I loathe to use the term 'canon' to describe them) was a LadyHawke rogue with a snarky take-nothing-seriously attitude and sticky fingers, who had much in common with Isabela and romanced her.

Fenris was okay, with rivaled slightly edging out friended romance, mostly because the first time I did it, I played a LadyHawke who was his complete opposite, pacifistic, diplomatic, light and ethereal. That 3 year gap was kind of jarring and stupid though. I hate catching up with the character my Hawke was supposed to love via some stupid, lame ass codex. After the freakout was usually the time my Hawke's end up with either Isabela or Merrill. However, kudos to him for the after "All that Remains" quest talk. I didn't really care for any of them, but his comes closest to being the most realistic/comforting. I still prefer Aveline's after-frankenmom chat to any of the others.

Merrill's is sweet, and sometimes I just can't resist her, especially if I rival her. Unless my Hawke is committed to his/her LI I usually can't resist flirting after the quest for the Arulenholm has finished. She just feels so alone then, even if you give it to her, and I want to wrap her up and hug her and protect her, which she resents, but *shrug* sometimes love doesn't make sense.

Anders is a freaking drama-train wreck. I can barely tolerate having him in my group on those occasions I am forced to bring him along. I prefer playing mages so I didn't have to bring him along, but when Hawke was a rogue or warrior, I used a mod that gives Merrill the creation/spirit healer tree, so I never had to have him with me if I didn't want. It was the very first mod that went into my game. Consequently, I've never romanced him. Can't even bring myself to flirt with him. If others find him cute or funny or whatever attractive quality they see in him, that's fine. Different strokes for different folks, but ugly, weasel-faced, bat**** eating insane stalker dudes are not my cup of tea.

Fenris 100%

In my first play through I had a casual thing with Isabella and thought Fenris was a whining jerk. That was until the game progress and I began to see his point and see just what he was dealing with, his former master was a sick freak. I so wanted to get out of the unofficial relationship with Isabella and get with Fenris but it was too late. Now I only romance Fenris and no other character in game interest me romantically. I tried both a friendship and rival romance and I love them both. I think he has the deeper relationship (IMO). I tried flirting with Anders but not only is he ugly (black stubble/blonde hair?) but I get the impression that he is only using Hawke. He goes from "I don't want to hurt you" to dropping hint after hint that he needs a place to stay and I haven't even slept with him. He also lies and deceive Hawke into helping with with his bomb. He just seems all about his own agenda and Hawke is just a means to an end. Fenris has always been straight forward and honest with his feelings. Even when he leaves Hawke and even when he returns. I've never felt as if he was out to use Hawke. I thought about trying a romance with Anders after Fenris left but once Anders started talking crap about him and called him a beast, I was done and sent him on his way. Butt ugly, crazy **** Anders can sod off! I would much rather romance Torpor the demon than him. I just love him calling Anders/Justice a Prig after killing him in the fade. lol!

Sadly, this is an overlooked aspect of Anders's character in DA2.  Had there been more of this and less of dramacake Anders, I may have considered it.  As it is, the character in this picture has less in common with Anders than the man in the moon would.Posted Image

And oddly enough I LIKE Awakening's Anders.  One of the first fanarts I did for DA was Anders sleeping peacefully with Ser Pounce also asleep on his tummy.  Got lots of nice comments.  This is how I prefer to think of Anders.  Not that psycho from DA2.

Actually, I felt like that from the beginning... but after a few (a lot!) playthroughs I noticed little dialogue tid-bits and hints and I realized this had also a lot to do with the inevitably limited narrative, because I understood there's so much we didn't see, and going by WHAT we see, there's still plenty left of him in the blank spaces you have to fill out yourself. And that makes me happy:wizard:

Merrill followed by Isabela. l don't like Anders and not attracted to Fenris. Yes Aveline should have been a choice to romance.

Anders (it's a terrible and heartbreaking romance no matter which way you play it but I can't help but like it. Also I feel romancing him gives Hawke more connection to the plot than just being his friend -or 'rival'- does)
I also really like romancing Fenris with a mage...
With Isabela she seems to prefer to not fall in love + I really like the friendship/friends with benefits or even pining!Hawke aspect...(I like her with Lady Hawke but since I have never been able to play as a female Hawke due to my hatred of her walk and voice...)
I just can't for the life of me romance Merrill. One she looks way younger than male Hawke (even a custom one without mods) and she shares quite a few traits with Bethany so that makes it creepy to me. And then there's Carver's little crush so I'd feel especially bad in playthroughs with him alive.

Go look up Dragon Age 2 Parody on YouTube, watch 4:47-5:17. This best explains why Merrill is the best in my not so humble opinion.

Anders just kind of creeps me out. Everything's about the plight of the mages and Justice and how he's inevitably going to hurt you. It's a bit Twilight-ish to me.

I'd like to romance Isabela, but I mostly enjoy playing mages and for some reason my mages all gravitate toward Fenris because how can you not?

I wish Varric was a romance option.

Oh please, when did Edward Cullen even helped anyone but himself ? Anders keeps a free clinic for refugees for 7 years, rescues stranded mages, helps Hawke.. Not the same thing at all.

at least Anders was gut-wrenching. Fenris was just a bit anticlimactic. "Oh, sorry I walked out on you three years ago. Kiss and make up?" *facepalm*

I totally agree with that. I really wished there was more. My first playthrough, I actually missed the quest to recruit Fenris. I romanced Anders, and I have to say, I loved it. Even his rivalry romance, which I've never personally done but have seen videos of, was really sweet. When he swears that even if he never convinces anyone that mages are not evil, he'll have Hawke by his side, I almost died a little inside. After I finally got Fenris on my second playthrough, I had a new character to fangirl over. I like them both, and I can't choose between either of them. I think it all depends on what kind of Hawke I play as. Right now, I have two characters, one with Fenris and one with Anders.
I JUST CAN'T CHOOSE!
