In the quest where you go into the Fade for that Elf boy, there is a puzzle with large and small barrels that need ot be moved to materialize, but in the middle of moving them I get attacked by demons and then I can no longer interact with them. Did I screw up? There are still barrels that haven't materialized yet and I reloaded a save to try again and they were in a different position when the Demons attacked me so I can safely assume I didn't solve it. What is the correct solution then if I've messed up twice now?

I believe the puzzle locks if you use too many moves to solve it.

The solution is all small barrels on top and large barrels on the bottom. Or maybe I have that backwards.

I wouldn't worry too much. There's another barrel puzzle in another room; all you get is two attribute points to allocate. Not a big deal.

hope this helps if you haven't already found the solution.

Thank you marz, I checked Youtube for a solution and all I found were videos of Dragon Age 2 gameplay and Minecraft videos for some reason. I'll have to remember that video for my next playthrough since I gave up on it.

Here is a written guide for future viewers. Instead of memorizing or tabbing in and out, you could take a picture on your cell phone and view it that way, or if you have a dual-screened computer.
1. Move two of the top big barrels to the right.
2. Move small barrel up.
3. Move small barrel right.
4. Move big barrel down.
5. Move small barrel on top, left.
6. Move small barrel, up.
7. Move small barrel to the left.
8. Move big barrel down.
9. Move small barrel right.
10. Move small barrel up.
11. Move large barrel on bottom, left.
12. Move large barrel on bottom, left.
13. Move last big barrel down.

watched the vid, this does not work for me. When i click the starting barrel it moves to the left not to the right. Other barrels move into the floor. I think this is bugged for me then.

I'm getting the same bug, the barrals move into the floor or up higher.  There doesn't seem to be the same movement for me.  anyone know why?

my barrels were moving all over the place, even into the ground, I spent ages trying to work through it thinking it was bugged until I finally caved and thought to check the forums and after following the above instructions it worked like a charm, cheers for the post

In my game barrels don't move at all or if they move they do it in the wrong direction... That's crap.

I played with those for about 10 seconds then said 'screw it' and hoped they didn't unlock a door i needed to get through or something.

Disagree. Works perfectly on 360. Sadly, I got spoiled so I didn't figure it out on my own but it works exactly as it should.

The solution is easy enough... provided you can get the barrels to move in the right direction. Like others have said, sometimes clicking on a barrel makes it move where you want it to, other times the barrel will sink into the ground or move over a neighboring barrel. Is there a secret to controlling the direction of these things? I'm really frustrated watching these barrels go in random directions while I cuss and hit reload.

Mine seems broken, too. Barrels seem to move in random directions. Also, I notices that sometimes when clicked the barrels go from transparent to solid, changing which barrels can be selected. Not sure if this is intentional or part of the same bug.

Same here.  I spent an hour trying to do a reload-save thing, but finally gave up.  Neither puzzle is possible to complete for me.  Conbined with the broken DLC Harimann-Sebastian quest, the constant loading crashes, and all the other broken quests, I'm so disappointed because I absolutely love the game itself.  I have never played such a buggy and broken game from Bioware before.  It's quite a shock, actually.

The barrels solidify when they are in their designated "correct" locations. At least for me, in a non-bugged game.

Also there's a book that flys away from you when you try to interact with it. Is it possible to interact with it?

Yes, whenever it stops it becomes selectable for a short time. Instead of trying to chase it, observe its path and where it stops (it flies around a fixed path). Place your character near one of these locations and click the book when it next comes by. You might need a couple of tries to get your positioning right.

I never had any problems with barrels going in wrong directions or things like that until I got Sebastian.
*stares at Sebby* You've been a bad boy. Go and pray to the Maker for forgiveness (and a patch plz!)
