BioWare Project

Updated information at the bottom of post for people who don't want to start a new game!

Pictures are worth a thousand words:

And for all you Merril fans who want to use her but can't afford to lose the heals:

What this mod does
This mod essentially gives players the choice to expand their companions in ways that they previous could not. Wanted to have Merril accompany you but needed at least one person with the Heal spell?

Now you can get her that much needed spell. What about wanting Fenris along but needing a tank? Or Isabela using a bow? This mod essentially unlocks all the possibilities by no longer forcing Companions into the weapon roles that BioWare had initially intended them for.

This means you can now have Isabela use a bow or Fenris use Weapon-and-Shield, straight away!

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT WANT TO START A NEW GAME!
Using the Dev Console, it is possible to manually add skill trees to your companions without restarting your game! Just follow the following steps to do it:

1 - Go to /installDirectory/Dragon Age 2/bin_ship/ and create a shortcut of DragonAge2.exe[/*]
2 - Right click on DragonAge2.exe - Shortcut and select Properties
3 - In the field called Target:, add after the last " -enabledeveloperconsole then click OK
4 - Go to /user/BioWare/Dragon Age 2/Settings/KeyBindings.ini
5 - Look for the line OpenConsole_0=Keyboard::Button_Grave and edit Grave to a button that is not used like ~ (Tilde) and Save
6 - Load the game and press the assigned button then try using a movement key. If your character does not move, the console is working fine.

To add a given skill tree to a selected Companion, first select the companion then open the console by pressing the assigned key. Then type: runscript AddTalent <TalentID>.

Talent IDs are as follows (Make sure to add them in sequence (First -> Second):

+ Bethany: Primal
- 302000 -> 302001
+ Anders: Entropy
- 305000 -> 305001
+ Merril: Creation
- 306000 -> 306001
+ Aveline: Two-Handed
- 102000 -> 102001
+ Fenris and Carver: Sword-and-Shield
- 101000 -> 101001
+ Isabela: Archery
- 202000 -> 202001
+ Varric: Dual Weapon
- 201000 -> 201001

No, it isn't. Was just meant to show what is doable, even with our limited access.

'kay! Will give it a try.

I assume this will fix my issue with half of the stuff being locked out in vanilla game and requiring lvl 99? :P

Does this also allow Aveline to use two-handers, or Isabela to use bows, etc.?

This is exactly what this mod does.

I also believe I might have figured a way to get it working in existing games, I'll let people know once I've tested it..

Okay, I lied. I did accidentally release it with Anders haveing Sword-and-Shield. It's been fixed now. I haven't tested it extensively but for the people who have tested it, no one has reported skills being locked out or requiring level 99, but I'm sure you'll let me know if that's the case.

Edit: Added a method to add the skill trees to existing games without having to restart.

Thank you! If this works it is a must-have mod! Can you also make it so Hawke can chose the companion's skill trees?

I actually can but I've run into several issues while testing, though I'm unsure if it's because I'm running a lot of very volatile stuff at the moment.

I assure you, though, that it does work.

You can add and remove talent trees from any char in your party using the console. There are detailed instructions at http://dragonage.wik..._(Dragon_Age_II).

I made my Rogue Hawke an Arcane Archer with Varrik and Sebastian's trees. It is a lot of fun although you have to remove the Varrik base talent to equip a new bow and then add it back:)

Ah, wonderful! I was thinking if all it did was add skill trees, then it's only really useful for the mages, but if it also allows martial classes to actually use other weapon styles, that's absolutely fantastic!

If this is possible, would it be possible to give companions a specialization point at level 14, so they can take a second prestige class?

I've been looking into how to add specialisations to Companions through natural means (i.e. without using the console or just by giving them a specialisation when they join) but for this particular case, the files are a bit different from DA: O, which is where most of my experience is based off. Doesn't mean I'm giving up, but it may take a bit longer than I'd like.

Thanks for bringing up the weapon styles issue though, I didn't realise I hand't made it clear. I'll add more information in my first post.

Thanks.

Is it possible to edit ability requirements with the means available? I'd love to remove the unnecessary point dumping certain abilities require.

I'm referring to the 'can't pick till you've spent X points in this school' requirement. It feels completely counter intuitive to the new abilities layout to have to waste points in skills/upgrades you don't want just to pick a skill you've already 'pathed' to and are already the required character level.

Hrm, I've not actually looked into this but it should be doable. I'll get back to you once I've looked at the files.
