Romancing with rivals is possible, just harder (apparently).

Totally possible. Romance is available on both the friendship and rivalry paths. I'm currently rivalmancing Fenris with a F!Hawke mage and loving every tension filled minute of it. 
Having conflicting pov's can really rack up the rival points. Good luck!
